More's the pity. Back when wearing them was the norm, I think they were actually just their undershirts... but they have to have a nicer name than that, and since they're always worn during those 19th century fencing duels, I think 'fencing shirts,' is only fitting.
Duels were done in undershirts only, and practices in full kit. Now most guys wear t-shirts under their padded kit, but -some- of us keep the old cottony collared shirts!
