Editing a Manga Scan with GIMP

Um.... I have a question? I'm trying to do this step by step as you're explaining it but every time I try to color one of my Pandora Hearts manga scan with my GIMP, it always appears as gray and not the color I took from a colored picture of the character. >':

I'm sorry to bother you with such silly questions. ^^;

This happens to me too, and I can't find any other way to color without lowing the opacity, which when I didn't that I didn't like the results. >_>
