ok, so a 68 335 had a trapeze? i could look it up but do you know when Gibson started doing that? I'll never understand why they would abandon it for the stop/re-issue thing!
check my vids (my one and only maybe?) and see my 1981 335 with a coil tap! absolutely the greatest guitar i've ever held!!
Greg, first i have to say, you've got always a great tone and playing! Every video is always a classy performance. I have a question for you, i want that tone in my Gibson es-335 of all videos i've seen this is the best sounding 335 i've ever seen, knowing that most of tone comes from fingers and amp, i still don't know what pickups to choose, i like the small neck profile so my first choice was the Gibson es-335 63' reissue with the burstbuckers, for these kind of sound would u prefer bb or 57?
Amazing! It got some BB King in it, some Peter Green, maybe a bit Hendrix and Page in there as well, all combined together and you get this amazing blues piece!
Can you tell us something about the pedals you use. In 1968 I played an Epiphone (original) 1966 Rivera (cherry red) with a 1966 Fender Vibrolux Reverb - very similar setup (Rivera was Epiphone's counter to the E-335 dot with the exception of a two piece "frequencator?" tailpiece).
I now play a 1997 Guild Bluesbird (made in NY pre-Fender) and an original 1994 Fender Blues Deluxe. I also own a 1990 Martin OMC-28 and a Taylor 1992(?) 915 Jumbo.
Do you buy all these guitars with the intent to resell them? Or buy them for yourself and decide which ones to keep and sell? I hope you kept that one ;-)
Very nice playing, your note choices are exactly what I would use!!! I'm a super super Larry Carlton fan. Your final mix down has a very clean studio reverb quality, can you tell me what you did to get that quality of reverb?
As tasty as Blues can get my man!!!..., unlike most who just want to show their licks, you are playing blues "musically"...much harder than most think as it is the notes you don't play that give it melodic space. Starting easy and building it up as the band builds! That was a "baby don't leave me" tune! B R A V O !!!
Hi, hab ein paar vids von dir angeschaut: Respekt. was mich interessiert wäre wie du aufnimmst ? Welches Interface ? Welches Programm, verwendest du nacher Plugins usw... Gruß Alex
I play an ES-335 Dot Fat Neck. Of all the amps I've heard you play through, this one sounds the best (warm, bluesy...not too bright like some). Which amp do you like to play through the most with your 335?
how do you think this compares to an Epiphone Sheraton 2? i think the sheraton sounds a little thicker than this, but then again ive never heard them in person what do you think?
Is there anywhere that i can download the backing track that you use? i have been learning your licks and would love to play along to a jam track as you have done.
I checked out youtube to look at an es-355 and so came across your vids by chance. Well done fella, really great playing. I could listen to you all day and night.
But one thing, you are comparing apples with pears..
Comparing youngsters with an adult man who's playing perhaps already decades with a 'youngster' who can play 10-15years tops, that sounds quite 'unfair' to me.
@cgambarrotti the comparison doesn't have to do with the age itself it has to do with the Era. An era when guitarist paid more attention to getting the timing down and playing slower if need be to make the music sound more musical. Now adays the (younger generation worries more about speed , so the speed is fast but not accurate so its not as musical or pleasing to the ear due to the timing not being perfect. In other words don't play fast if you having mastered the timing yet. Pratice, Pratice
man i love your playin style. (coming from a guy that plays classic hard rock/hair metal). It's been a while since I listened to much blues but it does sound awesome.
i need help i have the same guitar but im not sure what year it is the "Gibson" on the headstock looks like it has pearl inlays on it, not gold and does the icon below it but its nearly faded away ive just uploaded pics onto myspace account and facebook any chances of telling what year they are?
Fantastic .... Very interesting, like your phrasing alot... Thanks for putting up these videos..You really have nice control over allowing your notes to breath.. Great inspiration for any guitarist..
@GregsGuitars I agree. especially Peter Green , Mike Bloomfield and, I might add, the late, great Gary Moore. There are so many - Albert Collins, the 3 Kings (BB, Freddy, and Albert), Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters-that you can learn and draw from. Blues is not a technique, it's a feeling; an emotion, and you either have it, or you don't. You can't learn the blues in a couple of studio lessons, son. You'll either catch onto it someday, or you'll have to pick a different style to get famous.

Nice tone and playing man!! I have a Vibrolux reverb "Custom" 1995...I find it a great amp( sounds like the Vibroverb)...better than the blackface you find now in shops...what do you think of that amp? Do you know it?
Is the VIBROLUX you're using here from the 70s? Ciao
no offense greg, but gibsons are way to expensive for really good guitars (60's). And the new ones are crap compared to for ex. Tokais...bought 1 after comparing 335 from gibson with the really much better one ( in handling) from Tokai; price difference was a lil over 2000 CHF. But your sound is pretty cool. You into Jazz as well?? Best Regards mate
I just bought an original 1965 vibrolux....all original~tubes~speakers reverb tank~everything. I think it's the best amp I've ever had, and I have had every marshall and fender basically~yours is awesome ...Thanks
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
that 335 has more soul than any strat... i love the single coil but it doesn't keep up... tele is too thin, les paul is too heavy, everything else is a knock off or shitty metal guitar, too strat-y heavy string hard playing stuff like stevey ray i can't stand either
I'm not knocking his playing by the way. It's great. IMHO, single coil is the way to go. You'll never get real clean out of a humbucker. If you need distortion, add a pedal. No guitar can do it all.
@LesPaulRockerProduct My vote is for a strat as well. SG's are nice too but Hendrix, SRV, Jimi, and Clapton are 4 of the biggest strat players of all time. Santana usually rocks a PRS I think. An HSS strat or just a strat in general would be perfect for you.
IF.. you're such a guitar lover like me; don't argue about wich guitar is better because of the famous artist: Why don't you buy a strat, SG and a 335? just work a summer long and you'll have al three :)
If you want to play like Hendrix and SRV; take none of them; take a strat. Eric clapton? depends on his time. Do u want John Mayall or cream? SG or 335. Eric clapton from the 70's? Stratocaster. Santana; don't know to much bout him(A)

@danlovesnan Vibrolux reverb "Custom" and brown Vibroverb reissue have less sparkle claasic fender highs, more mellow sounding amps
GregsGuitars 1 year ago
@GregsGuitars
you're damn right!! more mellow sounding...My amp is a 1995 and has the two blue 10 Aminance speakers...mellow rounded sound... Rock on!!!
In the past I had a 1977 Mark1 (mesa)...great amp...but not good for me...Ciao

DO you just constantly trade guitars? Or do you hold on to all of those?

no offense greg, but gibsons are way to expensive for really good guitars (60's). And the new ones are crap compared to for ex. Tokais...bought 1 after comparing 335 from gibson with the really much better one ( in handling) from Tokai; price difference was a lil over 2000 CHF. But your sound is pretty cool. You into Jazz as well?? Best Regards mate

I think Gibson and Gibson Custom Shop is doing some nice stuff too! They really try to mak their guitars good.
I'm not a real jazz player, but Iistened to a lot to that stuff and absorbed things everytime I like it

I love semi & full hollowbodys...but with much wider necks than Gibson offers.

you must have one or two millions worth of guitars sitting in your house dude...
MrCptGonzo 1 year ago
could be 3 or 5 millions too....

In Muenster...ich sollte mir ein Zugticket besorgen...
Spaß beiseite, gut, dass es Leute gibt, die dafür sorgen, dass die alten Damen noch bespielt werden. Ohne Zweideutigkeit auf Gitarren bezogen.

Wait do you actually own all the guitars featured in your videos?

Very nice playing! Personally I prefer Sg's! But Es guitars can give very nice warm tones.

clint1663 dont talk bout stevie ray cause hes a legend and his guitar would put any es 335 to shame!

that 335 has more soul than any strat... i love the single coil but it doesn't keep up... tele is too thin, les paul is too heavy, everything else is a knock off or shitty metal guitar, too strat-y heavy string hard playing stuff like stevey ray i can't stand either
clint1663 1 year ago
I'm not knocking his playing by the way. It's great. IMHO, single coil is the way to go. You'll never get real clean out of a humbucker. If you need distortion, add a pedal. No guitar can do it all.

yes, I love good Tellys, but I'm a Gibson Fan and love the Gibson clean sound too!

How does this guy get to sit in the same room all day playing guitar?

sg, dont listen to the strat guy.
guitarnick914 2 years ago
@LesPaulRockerProduct strat. 3 out of the 4 you listed get their sound from a strat.
punkdude543 2 years ago 4
@LesPaulRockerProduct My vote is for a strat as well. SG's are nice too but Hendrix, SRV, Jimi, and Clapton are 4 of the biggest strat players of all time. Santana usually rocks a PRS I think. An HSS strat or just a strat in general would be perfect for you.
michaelmseventyseven 2 years ago
Hendrix and Clapton did play on sg's at times...
namyrb 2 years ago
IF.. you're such a guitar lover like me; don't argue about wich guitar is better because of the famous artist: Why don't you buy a strat, SG and a 335? just work a summer long and you'll have al three :)
TKbrands17 1 year ago
I say get a Les Paul Standard. An SG sounds too thin.
MannyBlue65 2 years ago
fender stratocaster
eikogo 2 years ago
If you want to play like Hendrix and SRV; take none of them; take a strat. Eric clapton? depends on his time. Do u want John Mayall or cream? SG or 335. Eric clapton from the 70's? Stratocaster. Santana; don't know to much bout him(A)
