Let's never forget that. Michael Strank is more of an American than we will ever be. And he was killed by "friendly fire." The video conveniently shuts off before we hear that gem.
Place of birth Jarabina, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) Place of death KIA on Iwo Jima Place of burial Arlington National Cemetery Allegiance United States of America Service/branch United States Marine Corps Years of service 1939-1945 Rank Sergeant Unit 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines Battles/wars World War II * Battle of Bougainville * Battle of Iwo Jima Awards Bronze Star Purple Heart
Wish i could find more story of M.Strank. My grandfather was on Iwo and took schrapnel to his leg, survived, and died of cancer in 1986. Sgt.Robert Flesch MC
This guy was my favorite of the six flagraisers when I read the book Flags of Our Fathers. He was a true hero and great guy on all accounts, such an awesome person to look up to and to still use as a standard of how to live, even today.
Mike Strank was a true American hero and warrior. Every American owes their freedom to him and others like him who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Rest in Peace Marine.
wow im reeading flags of our fathers i hes m one of my favouriites he new he was going to die it was wierd and i liked his atitude and look on things rip
Michael was my grandmothers uncle, imagine my teachers suprise when I did a report on him in high school and I brought in original documents and pictures, I spoke to Bradley when he came out with the book, it feels amazing knowing I am a blood relative to Michael
@tubesocks84 man your relative mike, he changed my life he is my hero, to be a man to sit on the beach and empty sand out of his shoes with mortar fire all around him, and to die trying to helop his men, i hope he reads this in heavean, he wan an amazing man and u are honored to be in his blood line
There's nothing more enjoyable then to see or read about a real american hero. My eyes moist when I see video's like this. I made a visit to Arlington Cemetery (which is oh so beautiful) 10 years ago, and stopped by Sgt Michael Strank grave. I strongly advise everyone to make a visit to Arlington, and visit graves such as Sgt. Strank, and Ira Hayes. You will come away loving America more.
hey stripe, i have been enjoying reading your posts. Im a former Marine Sergeant(90-95) and can still remember my DI asking me who Ira was... I had no clue. But quickly learned after that the hard way. Almost all the Marines of both of the flag raisings died before the battle ended. Poor Ira drank himslef to death. I suppose in those days they knew knothing of PTSD
The weapon that Mike Strank's bringing is an M50 Reising. It's not really popular. It's an Submachine Gun. Unlike the Thompson, the Reising fired from a closed bolt.
...I saw Bradley promote his book on CSPAN some years ago and became incensed when he used the phrase 'boys' while talking about the Marines and Corpsmen...as a Marine it must be know that anyone who did what they did were not boys! They were men. Calling any Marine a boy was an easy way to get one's ass kicked...SEMPER FI UNTIL I DIE!
I see your point, but these Marines were very young and calling them boys is not being disrespectful, it's just highlighting the fact that they were normally about 18
No Marine is a boy...if you look at Bradley in depth you'll come to know that early on his intentions were admirable, but then it became all about the money...I have followed this for a long time... and calling Marines 'boys' is disrespectful...but you have to be Marine to know that...it's about 'walking the walk'...
One of many heroes that died on Iwo Jima and throughout WWII...may he and all the boys who fought and died in there rest in peace, knowing they made a difference
2 days ago i found out that michael strank franklin sousley and harlon block all died on the island.M.strank died by a shell from his own ship something like that happened to harlon.F.Sousley died from a jap sniper
This Vdeo reminds me of my uncle Al who was also a Marine Raider, he fought on Kilawajean, Gudacnal, Philipines, and survived the brutallity of Iwo Jima, funny thins is that he was a florist when he got home, and i think he met either Rene Gagnon or Mike Strank i don't remeber.
Neat to watch. -Steve Strank, ogden utah

It's weird to think he was killed by friendly fire on Iwo Jima, it was a navy round that got him.
