  • Neat to watch. -Steve Strank, ogden utah

  • I ship out next week. Guide me.

  • I never met him; he died 4 years before I was born. Mike was my second cousin, and immigrated from Czechoslovakia as a kid along with his and my mother's parents. We are very proud of him. Thank you, Mike . From the Zadik (Dzadik) family. John Masselli

  • GOD BLESS THIS GREAT MARINE!

  • Let's never forget that. Michael Strank is more of an American than we will ever be. And he was killed by "friendly fire." The video conveniently shuts off before we hear that gem.

  • The Germans, and mostly the jappers cannot be trusted. Gotta keep an eye on these fux for 500 years.

  • @jonmurdock The "jappers" didn't kill Michael Strank. The Americans did.

  • @jonmurdock Keep an eye on them, so the Americans can fuck you over.

  • R.I.P. God bless your soul. America misses you.

  • It's weird to think he was killed by friendly fire on Iwo Jima, it was a navy round that got him.

    R.I.P. Mike Strank

  • I was always proud to be a slovak but few years ago when I discovered he was from my land my proud level rised over 9000!!

  • Place of birth Jarabina, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) Place of death KIA on Iwo Jima Place of burial Arlington National Cemetery Allegiance United States of America Service/branch United States Marine Corps Years of service 1939-1945 Rank Sergeant Unit 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines Battles/wars World War II * Battle of Bougainville * Battle of Iwo Jima Awards Bronze Star Purple Heart
  • Wish i could find more story of M.Strank. My grandfather was on Iwo and took schrapnel to his leg, survived, and died of cancer in 1986. Sgt.Robert Flesch MC

  • Killed by naval artillery if I remember right.

  • This guy was my favorite of the six flagraisers when I read the book Flags of Our Fathers. He was a true hero and great guy on all accounts, such an awesome person to look up to and to still use as a standard of how to live, even today.

  • Mike Strank was a true American hero and warrior. Every American owes their freedom to him and others like him who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Rest in Peace Marine.

  • he wanted to be the president. but he became so much more....a Marine.

  • wow im reeading flags of our fathers i hes m one of my favouriites he new he was going to die it was wierd and i liked his atitude and look on things rip

  • rip mr strank

  • to drive a bus hahah

  • I wish this story were longer. It cuts off all of a sudden. Too bad

  • @LosAngeleno1959 Just to let you know, this clip is taken from a DVD called "Heroes of Iwo Jima" It is awesome.

  • Michael was my grandmothers uncle, imagine my teachers suprise when I did a report on him in high school and I brought in original documents and pictures, I spoke to Bradley when he came out with the book, it feels amazing knowing I am a blood relative to Michael

  • @tubesocks84 man your relative mike, he changed my life he is my hero, to be a man to sit on the beach and empty sand out of his shoes with mortar fire all around him, and to die trying to helop his men, i hope he reads this in heavean, he wan an amazing man and u are honored to be in his blood line

  • @tubesocks84

do you know the first time i read about Mike Strank, i fell in love with him.. yeah i know his dead and all.. just so brave and valiant. WOW.

  • @tubesocks84 Awesome!

  • in the book "flags of our fathers" mike strank is easily my favorite character

  • Semper fi

  • 1:00 cheer leader?

  • i was i the marines on a six month tour in Iraq and i used his leading style to lead my men

  • who gave me thumbs down

  • Well, I gave you a thumbs up. He has inspired me too. Lots of love to you.

  • that guy amazes me, and it is people like him who keep our country strong:)

  • Is there more video on him? This was to short.

  • I did a report on him once and the weird part was no one really cared who he was. But to me he's a real hero!

  • the guy above him in the yearbook wants to drive a bus. Mike Strank is my hero

  • ha yer i saw that

  • There's nothing more enjoyable then to see or read about a real american hero. My eyes moist when I see video's like this. I made a visit to Arlington Cemetery (which is oh so beautiful) 10 years ago, and stopped by Sgt Michael Strank grave. I strongly advise everyone to make a visit to Arlington, and visit graves such as Sgt. Strank, and Ira Hayes. You will come away loving America more.

  • hey stripe, i have been enjoying reading your posts. Im a former Marine Sergeant(90-95) and can still remember my DI asking me who Ira was... I had no clue. But quickly learned after that the hard way. Almost all the Marines of both of the flag raisings died before the battle ended. Poor Ira drank himslef to death. I suppose in those days they knew knothing of PTSD

  • Too bad young men like Michael Strank are so rare today.

  • Its true, he borned in small village Jarabina, Slovak republic is beautiful

  • Sgt.Michael Strank borned in Slovakia.

  • True Hero

  • what was his rank, i know a 1st div raider very awsome,

  • this guy is a true marine if u hate him go kill your self

  • Did somebody say they hate him? Why in the world would anybody do that.?Heroes are rare and we should thank God for them.

  • I cried when I saw Mike die on Flags of our Fathers. He was hero.

  • I love this guy

  • He was hero and he came from our country. I am proud that i am Slovak because of people like he. Cest tvojej pamiatke. Si moj hrdina.

  • Thank you to all the men who gave their lives for all of us, you are all hero's

  • Where's the rest of the wonderful documentary?? Sheesh!!

  • Comment removed

  • What kind of gun is Mike Strank holding at 0:37? That's not a Thompson is it?

  • it looks like a Thompson or maybe an M1A1 Carbine

  • The weapon that Mike Strank's bringing is an M50 Reising. It's not really popular. It's an Submachine Gun. Unlike the Thompson, the Reising fired from a closed bolt.

  • ah ok i really dont know aht type of gun that is...he was my great great uncle.........

  • where can i find the rest of this?

  • I believe it is called "Heroes of Iwo Jima"

  • read the book, flags of our fathers, or the movie by clint eastwood

  • Good!I also like Mike Strank!

  • This man is a marines marine god bless him

  • Mike is my hero i am joining the marines because of him

  • as well as i.....he was my great great uncle....

  • mike was the grteatest marine ever

  • ...I saw Bradley promote his book on CSPAN some years ago and became incensed when he used the phrase 'boys' while talking about the Marines and Corpsmen...as a Marine it must be know that anyone who did what they did were not boys! They were men. Calling any Marine a boy was an easy way to get one's ass kicked...SEMPER FI UNTIL I DIE!

  • i'm pretty sure he didn't mean to insult them. Instead of boys he should have said young men. Semper Fi

  • I see your point, but these Marines were very young and calling them boys is not being disrespectful, it's just highlighting the fact that they were normally about 18

  • No Marine is a boy...if you look at Bradley in depth you'll come to know that early on his intentions were admirable, but then it became all about the money...I have followed this for a long time... and calling Marines 'boys' is disrespectful...but you have to be Marine to know that...it's about 'walking the walk'...

  • nice vid....do you have anymore of this ??

  • sgt. strank was the best leader on iwo jima. that's want many of the vertans said.

  • One of many heroes that died on Iwo Jima and throughout WWII...may he and all the boys who fought and died in there rest in peace, knowing they made a difference

  • Sgt. Mike had too much integrity to become president.

  • Lol, the person above Mike, where it said what they wanted to do when they grow up, said "to drive a bus". RIP Mike, you were a hero.

  • Mike Strank came from Czechslovakia.

  • 2 days ago i found out that michael strank franklin sousley and harlon block all died on the island.M.strank died by a shell from his own ship something like that happened to harlon.F.Sousley died from a jap sniper

  • yes, mike strank was killed by friendly artillery (that bastard) and he was buried in Arlington Cemetery....

  • true

  • dam why did he have to die

  • @Elight00 He died so others wouldnt have to. So that we can go to school, raise a family and waste time on youtube.

  • Great video. He was a true American hero.

  • Too bad he could never become president because of where he was born. He really had what it took to be a great leader.

  • That, and also the fact that he was killed on Iwo.

  • Well even if he had survived our laws would never allow him to become a president. Such a shame.

  • This Vdeo reminds me of my uncle Al who was also a Marine Raider, he fought on Kilawajean, Gudacnal, Philipines, and survived the brutallity of Iwo Jima, funny thins is that he was a florist when he got home, and i think he met either Rene Gagnon or Mike Strank i don't remeber.

  • Thank you to telling us the story of your uncle.

    Best regards to your uncle!:-)

  • It couldn't have been Mike Strank. He was killed in battle six days after he helped raise the flag at Iwo.

  • This was in respone to supernole100.

  • @supernole100 Mike Strank died on iwo. it was probabley rene

  • @supernole100 mustve met rene cuz strank died on the island
