He said what he should have, he was still, at that point, the KU coach. He didn't say he wasn't going to UNC, only that he was not worried about it at that exact moment.
Roy said in his autobiography he asked Bonnie before the interview not to ask about the UNC job. Then on camera he asked not to talk about it and what did she do? I can understand why he flipped.

Haha, the young guys aren't the problem on this years team, the problem is some of the older players that have checked out. Dexter Strickland looks like he will be sick and although Hensen came on slow he has looked good recently. Ed Davis is hurt right now so his numbers are significantly below what they will be. Watch out for UNC in the ACC tournament, they have looked bad recently but they have the pieces if put together properly to make a great run in the tournament.

But Henson and Strickland will grow even more this year and be nasty, and the 2010 class is the best in the nation. Roy Williams might be the best coach in college basketball today. I can't stand UNC but they have a coach who is pure class. He stood by his players 100% here. Multiple Final Fours at Kansas and now 2 national championships at UNC. Congrats Roy

in 1993 North Carolina defeated Kansas in the Final Four and Roy stuck around and cheered for Carolina in the final game so it was only fitting for him to do the same in 2008.

Wearing the KU sticker was payback for stealing our coach. Roy knows he hurt the entire Jayhawk community by leaving us after he promised that he would stay. He was trying to make up for leaving Kansas.
When Roy was at Kansas he always said Kansas was his favorite school and Carolina second. It just became flipped around when Roy went to Carolina so wearing that sticker he was paying allegiance to his former university.
Roy just knows he made a mistake in leaving KU. He would have been immortalized had he stayed at KU and that's saying a lot considering Roy never won the big one at KU. Being at UNC, he will always be under the shadow of Dean Smith no matter how many championships he brings. KU has the better basketball coach and more than likely the better person now.

Did you just compare Okie State with UNC? UNC basketball is like Notre Dame, UT, Oklahoma, USC, etc. in football and KU, UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, etc. in basketball. Sports success is cyclical for everyone, even the most storied programs. But that still doesn't change the fact that the UNC job is not comparable to Okie State.

I'm not a UNC fan. The only time I've ever rooted for them is when they play Duke, but I root for everyone against Duke. As for the Self/Williams thing, I think Williams leaving KU worked out pretty darn well for KU. They got a much younger coach, arguably a BETTER coach, and they won a title very quickly after Williams departed. Looks like they have a great chance to get another one this year. I just hope they don't beat my Red Raiders by 50-60. LOL.

It's just amazing when you see the opening video at home games with James Naismith, Phog Allen, and then pictures of Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp in Allen Fieldhouse's sports museum. That's a totally different thing. UNC might have been a better job for Roy based on where he is from, but not based on the school. There are several elite college basketball schools out there, KU, UK, UNC, UCLA and Indiana even. Comparing them to each other is like comparing green apples to red apples, in the end they are still apples, which is why I think Roy took a major sidestep in going to UNC just based on the job alone.

Haha, the young guys aren't the problem on this years team, the problem is some of the older players that have checked out. Dexter Strickland looks like he will be sick and although Hensen came on slow he has looked good recently. Ed Davis is hurt right now so his numbers are significantly below what they will be. Watch out for UNC in the ACC tournament, they have looked bad recently but they have the pieces if put together properly to make a great run in the tournament.

But Henson and Strickland will grow even more this year and be nasty, and the 2010 class is the best in the nation. Roy just knows he made a mistake in leaving KU. He would have been immortalized had he stayed at KU and that's saying a lot considering Roy never won the big one at KU. Being at UNC, he will always be under the shadow of Dean Smith no matter how many championships he brings. KU has the better basketball coach and more than likely the better person now.

Actually he's stated that it does hurt him when KU fans say bad things about him, maybe not to the point that he criesthough. He definitely gave everything he had to keep Kansas the top notch team it is. Bill Self graduated from and played for Oklahoma State and didn't jump ship like Roy though. He knows there is no better job than KU. Roy could win many poor championships and still be in Dean Smith's shadow at UNC. He would have been a saint forever at KU even if never won a championship here.

Um you weren't in Lawrence the last few years Roy was there. People were ready to rename Allen Fieldhouse, "Roy's House." The ones that gave Roy crap were probably the same ones that wanted Bill Self fired after the first round loss against Bucknell. And if you're going to use the "joke" logic, UNC had become the epitome of a joke in the early 2000s. KU was in the Final 4 two years in a row while UNC was falling further and further into oblivion. But there was no doubt Roy would fix it...

Did you just compare Okie State with UNC? UNC basketball is like Notre Dame, UT, Oklahoma, USC, etc. in football and KU, UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, etc. in basketball. Sports success is cyclical for everyone, even the most storied programs. But that still doesn't change the fact that the UNC job is not comparable to Okie State.
Just to compare Self's situation, it'd be like me being the UT football coach. With that situation, why would I want to coach the Texas Tech football team?

I think you may have just proven my point though. Roy Williams took a major side step and risk going to a broken UNC program. Yes UNC is his home, but Roy was riding high in Lawrence. As far as jobs and appreciation goes, KU isn't one of those jobs you just abandon. He'll always be in Dean Smith's shadow. The legacy he could have cemented at KU will always be greater than whatever he does at UNC because of Dean Smith's legacy there. At least say you understand my point whether you agree or not.

I understand your point, but I do disagree with it. He may have never won a title at Kansas. He now has two of them at UNC. I'm a golfer and golf fan. For years, Roy Williams and Phil Mickelson were both the "best to never win the big one" of their sports. That has changed and I am sure that Roy Williams is very happy that he was able to make it change so quickly at UNC.

I'm not a UNC fan. The only time I've ever rooted for them is when they play Duke, but I root for everyone against Duke. As for the Self/Williams thing, I think Williams leaving KU worked out pretty darn well for KU. They got a much younger coach, arguably a BETTER coach, and they won a title very quickly after Williams departed. Looks like they have a great chance to get another one this year. I just hope they don't beat my Red Raiders by 50-60. LOL.

In all honesty though, UNC is a better basketball school than KU. As you said UNC is his home. Just because he would be a legend in KU doesnt make it a better job. He has in a very short time take UNC further than he ever did KU. As far as Dean Smith goes, the only people that will hold him in a higher light than Roy Williams are the older alumni. 18 year old kids really dont care about Dean Smith. It might be sad, but it is true.

I disagree with your first sentence and your third sentence. It's just amazing when you see the opening video at home games with James Naismith, Phog Allen, and then pictures of Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp in Allen Fieldhouse's sports museum. Sure the Dean Dome is nice, but you step foot inside the Fieldhouse and you feel this history running through your veins.90% of KU's student body feels that same history so it's sad that young UNC fans don't care about Smith.That itself makes KU a better job

That's a totally different thing. UNC might have been a better job for Roy based on where he is from, but not based on the school. There are several elite college basketball schools out there, KU, UK, UNC, UCLA and Indiana even. Comparing them to each other is like comparing green apples to red apples, in the end they are still apples, which is why I think Roy took a major sidestep in going to UNC just based on the job alone.

I am a Duke fan.And i admit roy is a class act and a good coach but the fact is Roy williams thought about the UNC ever since he became a coach...also id like to point out UNC was picked to win the championship last year and i think dick vitale has picked them to win it every year since about 2003...im not trying to knock roy or UNC but i think it is rediculous win people say dick vitale is Duke biased

Of course he thought about UNC - who wouldn't want to coach their alma mater? Anyway, I would say Vitale is ACC-biased in general. He loves the Duke-UNC rivalry, the most intense rivalry in maybe all of U.S. college sports. I think Vitale picked UNC early in 05 (and happened to be right) as well as 08 and this year. They did end the reg. season #1 last year. And anyone would be stupid to not see UNC as a potential contender this year. I think Vitale's pretty wise in his picks.

wow what a class act...roy the choker, the same thing will happen this year, they will run up against a quick, athletic team in the tourney like kansas last year and get knocked out...how many great kansas teams did roy take to the tourney and got knocked out, he won the title at unc with dohertys recruits...roy can't compare with coach k...just look at there records...final 4's, ncaa championships, acc titles, etc...
