Ilove watching Koichi Tohei's aikdo, admittedly a lot of his later work became a bit 'mystical' with 'ki' aikido but I am reliably informed that as a younger man he was when hell of a bone breaker, refuse a breakfall, lose an arm. The reason for the jumps are not instantly obvious but a lot of it is to do with being completely weightless at one point then sudenly having the full weight of your whole body thrusting you along your weak line. Bloody hard to get right.
I've been told a bunch of diff. reasons why he jumps... I guess they're all correct. 1 reason is because he liked a lot of up and down movement in aikido. Jumping at the "right time" can exagerate this. Like judo players kicking their feet out behind them before springing into a throw. Not sure if it's necessary but it does help. 2. O'sensei hopped around a lot too, the student emulates the teacher. 3. i've noticed that it creates a very soft way of moving. I don't do it but....
I do not understand why he is jumping starting at :32. Can someone intelligently shed some light on this technique, an please refrain from stating the obvious "he's building momentum", because I'm well aware there's more than meets the eye when it comes to aikido. (Sorry to be so forward, it's difficult to get decent answers on the interweb these days.)
I assume you mean "Why is Tohei jumping." The answer is rather obvious, it's just a faster and so more powerful way to move and it cuts out a lot of complicated footwork.
Tohei Sensei died some years ago. I train under the guidance of one of his students, and they tell me how wonderful was to train with him, and how grateful they are to him.
They tell me stories about his energy and joy, even a few weeks before his death.
I've personally done no touch throws in the street. Aikido is no quick fix for self-defense on the street, but when you've put in the time, it does a lot more than fix a confrontation.

I wonder if Tohei Sensei still practices? He's almost 90 years old.

Actually, he isnt dead. He just very rarely teaches Aikido anymore. Look him up anywhere on the internet. He's 88 years old.

Oopps, my bad. I confused the names. I was thinking about another Tohei Sensei (Akita Tohei).

Koichi Tohie- said it best when talking about the difference between Aikido and Karate-" Feet are made to stay on the ground."
