I drive 50 mile round trip to college daily,so the Volt and the Leaf would cut my emissions. I ordered a leaf because its 100% electric and was cheaper. As a college kid cheaper overshadows everything. The Electric Ford Focus would probably be my price point. For all the EV lovers check out this video. I ordered my Leaf car in September hoping for a February Delivery but would love to win one instead of paying for one. winaleaf.blogspot.com

Ok, just test drove it today and I gotta say, what an awsome car! Never much cared for the body style but it dosen't look quite as bad in person. It's a screamin little car with very sporty handling. Not all that "little" inside though, lots of room to stretch out. I brought my pro-oil anti-ev co-worker and he drove it too, he is now a fan. What more can you say. I will however wait and test the Ford Focus EV next year before picking between the two.

You people do realize that electricity doesn't just come out of nowhere, right? If you live in the US (or just about any other country) then most of that electricity comes from fossil fuels. An electric car therefore runs on mostly coal, oil and natural gas.
useless, useless for a daily car! 100 mile range for 25000 dollars! what the hell? and here in fla. you use the a/c and your lucky to get 50 miles out of it, how useless is that!!!
@ariesvids The small socket is for standard voltage, but I think you have to install a charging station at your home. You can't plug it in directly to the standard household socket.
@forrest225 Well... I was thinking from my point of view. I mean in Europe the standard voltage is not 120, but 220v. So this is not the problem here. And even with the same voltage you can't plug in in the normal socket. You will need to have a charging station. Why's that? If you are able to charge anywhere, that will be good transition until there are charging stations everywhere. And even with 120v, slow charging is better then no charging.
Why cant they just use a normal kind of plug, are they going to try and set up a bunch of price gouging charging stations?, put normal plugs on these things Nissan.
@Justinbanner21 It's not "price-gouging", it's reality. US homes don't have 480v power to charge in 30 min. and besides anyone who doesn't own a home will need to use stations. Those who own homes will be able to charge overnight.
It only costs about three dollars to fully charge a Nissan leaf, regardless of whether it's a quick charge station or not. A fully charged battery can go about 170 kilometers. If you do the math, it's clear that you save a TON of money as opposed to using gas. Roughly converted, charging the LEAF is similar to about 50 cents a gallon of gas.
The prospect of the necessary infrastructure also spells out higher electrical prices and everybody's favorite, higher taxes, to foot the tab. Interestingly, the EV will actually be competing for tax dollars with mass transit and other green initiatives. All this will take sizable political action to swing favor towards the EV if it is ever to gain a foot hold.
Well currently Shai Agassi is far ahead of all ridicoulus companies that try to make an out of the roof expensive EV and expect people to buy it! Like with gasoline cars, did we sell the car before we had gas stations?
Course, the elephant in the room is the issue of charging stations. A quick charge (about 30 minutes) requires a pricey three phase charger, something not available for consumers even if they wanted to pay for it (3 phase power is not run to residences), otherwise, it'll be about ~8 hours on 120VAC, or ~4 hours from your dryer outlet (240VAC).
another video mentions ~ 8h for 220 station and 16h for regular outlet.
Given the limited numbers initially available, the people that get these in the first year or so will be people that just use it to commute and charge overnight from home(with 220 station) so its not an issue for them. Then a few years later the availability of charging stations (work, mall, hotel, restaurant, IKEA, etc) will grow to a point that it will not be a problem for many more buyers. But its not 4 everyone
This looks promising, but would anyone here tell me how to go about calculating the cost per charge on my electric bill so people can tell whether and how much they'd save; It seems each case may be different since gas and electric prices are different in different areas. Thanks to anyone who gets us the answer.
Typical numbers I've seen report about 80% efficiency when charging an electric car. So the Leaf's 24KWh battery would take roughly 30KWh to fully charge. Nissan claims you get 100 miles per charge. So if your electric company charges $0.10 per Kilowatt (a typical rate on the west coast) you'll spend $3 to charge it, or $0.03 per mile. I'm currently spending about $0.10 per mile on gas for my Toyota Matrix, for comparison. However you need to take into battery life, etc for a real comparison
Thanks for your reply. U make a really good point about battery life, I now suspect that one should also consider the temperature where they live; I live somewhere that gets very cold so if it has a heater and I used it it probably would get far less range than if I lived in florida.
Here in Portland Oregon they have installed an great number of rapid charge charging stations across the metro area, because of that Nissan will be selling the LEAF here first along with a couple other American cities that have adequate charging infrastructure.
but i figure that the charging station would be at a local retailer with auto repair center i figure its the only way you get a rapid charge with out the drawbacks you know if shit were to hit the fan you got a repair station rite next to it
in witch i hope you take that intensive to the test Nissan before you get recalls and injuries to where lawsuits come about
yes I'd buy, for sure! There are charging stations in some cities of Portugal, UK, Denmark, Germany and France, as far I know. Although that number will rise exponentially in few years to come, the main charging station will be your home and job's parking lot. EV will prevail!!!

greenboy215 2 years ago
estimated 30KWh to charge at 11.6¢ per KWh = $3.38
$3.48 ÷ 100 per charge = $0.0348
So it will cost about 3½ cents per mile. I'd say that's pretty amazing.
