just fo rthe record this is actualy pretty calm, I was onboard a AOR adn teh wavbes were crashing up over the bridge, if you are wondering which ship just research teh Canadian Navy tankers
Was on an old WWII Fleet Oiler during Korea. She had a single screw and when that came out of the water in the middle of the night I swore we were on our way to Dave's Locker. North Atlantic was always an interesting place once one became used to it. Looking back on it, I loved Sea Duty.
Hi Interflug020. That was a joke. My dad was WWII also. In the Pacific. Grandfather in WWI in France. My son is heading into the Air Force in the spring. As they say in the song, "It's a Family Tradition".
Followed a hurricane in the Med. back in the 1970s coming back from Greece going home to Naples home base, had 60+ ft. seas for 4 days. Lots of fun.Try climbing down the forward hole of an old tender just to make sure everything is secure. Talk about a elevator ride.
This is pussy stuff. 1976 off of Cape Het.. 45% rolls. Buddy of mine flew out of his bottom rack..sailed across the floor.. head first into a water fountain. He later tied ropes across the rack like a spider. He stayed put the rest of the night.
@PhilloTBillo I agree wiith you. Those 45degree rolls will let walk on the walls of a ship. Hell I had a top bunk and I have awaken during many a night storm hanging by the waist or shoulders from those safety straps.
Believe me, I've left my share of boot prints on the bulkheads in rough seas. F'n ship would roll 20 degrees, I'd be standing on the vertical bulkheads then it would pitch forward and send me flying into something or someone. Sometimes at my station, I'd have to sit on the deck because the chairs would fly across the compartment with or without me in it. My brother who is also in the Navy, is on the USS Roosevelt, laughs at me all the time because those Nimitz class carriers dont budge.
Well yes they do, but my point was they dont move much often. In high seas yeah they pitch and roll, but nothing compared to what us destroyer crews went through.
i spent 5 years on a Numnutz class carrier, and saw my share of wicked seas..yes, those carriers do move lol..i also spent 2 years on a Frigate, and lemme tell ya, those suck on heavy seas..i then did 2 years on a Flt II DDG and those suck even worse in bad seas
Drake passage. Gone through there twice and both times there was 20-30ft seas. Both us and the Nimitz herself had structural damage to the ships in 2001 coming out of there hitting swells as much as 45ft. That had to be the worst ride in my life getting tossed around in that destroyer and we were in the Nimitz's wake so she took the brunt of it. Watched her props come out the water quite a few times that voyage. Once we rounded the cape though, it was smooth sailing up to San Diego.
Yup. I think it was was her forward RAM mount that tore off and went overboard. We lost an antenna and had minor damage to the starboard rudder due to our stern slamming in and out of the water.
Please believe me, it aint fun. Not when it lasts for weeks at a time. Rough seas suck. They completely change the way you live your life on the boat.

Lol, love seeing footprints on walls on the bigger ships after storms, fun, fun.

It's better when they have to refuel in rough seas.

Trick, Take your shoe and shove it under your mattress below your lower back and lay sideways. I always slept good in rough weather.

What's really funny is that when you take a dump while a ship is pitchin' and rollin'. You flush the toilet and the turds come right back up. LMAO

just imagine what those submarines are like in bad weather... i would rather be on this boat
yankzilla13 2 years ago
@yankzilla13 subs aren't affected by the weather really unless they are ridiculously ferocious and cause deep water swells,

@yankzilla13
You'd think a Sub would just dive.
