Let me shut everybody up Emmit was the top RB in History not bacause of the i formation that they ran but the seperated shoulder game that game alone puts him above everyone else period. Enough said what back even today would do that name one and hit me back up and shut my mouth any one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We shouldnt be having this arguement. And I quote: Barry on Emmitt - "I would never say that (I was the best RB of all time). He (Emmitt) was too great of a player, and I loved competing against him." Emmitt on Barry - "heard about what Sanders said...so very flattered but he should know i think he's the best of all time." So lets just leave it at that, 2 of the best ever that we got to see play in the same era. Our arguing only belittles what they were about and able to accomplish.
google barry sanders playoff stats. espn has an nice article about your complete running back. i would copy paste the website but wont let me. columnist=paolantonio_sal&id=3055421
@Apophis1919 Im lookin at Emmitt on a year by year basis, your just focusing on a few games played by pretty much 1 guy versus the other team. He cant do it all, hence no ring(rings are for good teams). But what he did accomplish is straight up amazing. Emmitt too but not as much cause of the cast along side him throughout a majority of his career and the numbers toward the end of it.
And believe it or not, but Emmitts numbers are better if you leave out his last 5 seasons if your comparing his and barrys first 10 season rushing and receiving AVERAGES. Emmit was god awful most of those last 5. Comparing the first ten as they are or getting their averages shows how much better barry was. Its better for Emmitt if you average it, cause he never even broke 1,800 yards in a season, and he always had alot more carries and receptions but much less yards.
@45footballhead LOL he never had to run for 1800yds cuz he didnt need to. Do I need to remind you they basically sat him out in the last games. could of easly gotten 1800yds twice! 92=1713yds and 95=1773yds. I back my reasons up. whats ur reason if barry so COMPLETE, why did he ONLY have 1 season where he LED the league in rushing??? the way I see it. He was SHUTOUT in the REDZONE. NO VISION. most of his yards are broken plays,n when he gets down redzone, he disappears.
@Apophis1919 Dont waste your time bro, I try to argue this all day with the people who say "well Barry averaged 5 ypc and Emmitt only 4.4" Yeah thats true, but you can also have 19 carries for 20 yards then break and 80 yard run and average 5 yards per carry. Barry was hit or miss and for every hit he missed ALOT, costing his team field position, first downs, drives, and more. A big play threat does nothing but make your defense tired and keep you from getting offensive rythm.
Here's a couple more facts you might not know that I looked up when I wrote a paper on this in college. Over his 13 year career with Dallas Emmitt (on a more "potent offense") scored 25% of his teams points (not just td's but POINTS, so Fg's included). Barry only accounted for 18% of his team points over his 10 year career. Also when Emmitt was on the bench Dallas went 1-6 without him, the Lions went 4-3 without Barry in the lineup! Anyone care to explain? lol
@dawhiteguy622 Somebody knows what there talking about... im stilll waiting on your response about Barry in the playoffs or against the Packers and what Emmitt did against the Packers mr I know everything about football because i played football=@45footballhead... LMFAO want some advice dont say that again lol.. i know everything cuz i played D-league football LMFAO!!!!!!!
@Apophis1919 And no I dont claim to know everything but I do know football and i do know how to break down football properly. Thats one thing you learn watching hours of film everyday year after year. Maybe you do, maybe you dont. But the problem I have is the structure of your arguement. You keep boiling it down to a few games. What does a few games have to do with a career? Barrys team was never as helpful toward him as Dallas was to Emmitt
@Apophis1919 Oh he COULD have huh? So lets keep talking hypothetical then. If Barry COULD have played 5 more seasons, he COULD have easily broken the rushing record (at that time) in 1 more season. Emmitt went into his 12th season to pass Barry, then a little more than his 13th season to pass Walter. With Barry averaging over 1500 per season, and only being about 1400 away, he COULD have gotten it.
@45footballhead By the time emmitt was in his 10 season he also had played another full seasons worth of playoff games and had another 1586 yards and 22 tds of wear on him!
@Apophis1919 But again, dont take my word for barry being better. Look at any players, coaches or owners poll and the truth is there. Not only do the numbers speak when you know how to read them, but those that played with and against them both always hold barry in higher regard.
@45footballhead Barry has better HIGHLIGHTS...but if you were building a team to win superbowls you would be a FOOL to take Barry, or anyone over Emmitt for that matter. He played in a division that won 5 out of 7 superbowls at one point and was defensively tough. He is the ONLY great back to have his YPC go UP in the playoffs. And he was a touchdown machine (last time I checked you dont get point for crazy jukes and spin moves....just crossing the goal line!)
@dawhiteguy622 Emmitt average only 1 more TD per season than Barry over the course of their careers. Emmitts YPC went up in the playoffs because the years they won the superbowl (92 93 95) are also the years that aikman and irvin also put up the best numbers of their careers those seasons as well. You have 3 or more guys like that on an offense, its hard to know who will get the ball. Opening opportunities for all 3 to do what they do.
@45footballhead Lol..lets look at Aikman those years, 92 3445 yards 23 tds 89 rating, 93 3100yards 15tds, 99 rating, 95 3300 yards, 16tds, 93 rating. Those numbers are nothing more than MEDIOCRE! Emmitt those years accounted for 6100 yards and 66 tds.....hahahahah, so a RB had more tds than his QB over that time period, face it bro, you wont win this arguement. Also how hard is it to be a qb when you just run play action and wait for 8 men in the box to throw?
@45footballhead Here's another fun fact for you, the year before Emmitt was drafted they had Aikman, Irvin, Moose, Gogan, Newton on offense...AND THEY WENT 1-15! Think about that one....ONE win! Ever think that Aikman and Irvin are HOF's bc of superbowl title (which EMMITT led them to!)??? Irvin career is almost IDENTICLE to Herman Moore's and AIkman career rating is lower than Qb's like Niel O'donnel, Bernie Kosar, McNabb, Culpepper, Mark Brunell, Elvis Grbac, etc!!!!
@45footballhead dude....if you want to compare stats do it with 10 seasons since barry retired after 10...dont be a douche and add in Emmitts last 3 seasons with the fuckings CARDINALS when he was old as shit. Emmitt had more touchdowns in his first 6 seasons than Barry in his 10!!!!
@dawhiteguy622 I was just comparing the first 10, but the other dude kept calling Barry out on single games and saying playing longer doesnt mean anything. I said the least he could do is compare single seasons or averages since they didnt play the same length. Which was more favorable for Emmitt if he did it that way. Yea Emmitt had more TDs, but Barry killed it in every other category. Always doing more with less: less carries, catches and teammates.
@45footballhead Lol..lets look at Aikman those years, 92 3445 yards 23 tds 89 rating, 93 3100yards 15tds, 99 rating, 95 3300 yards, 16tds, 93 rating. Those numbers are nothing more than MEDIOCRE! Also how hard is it to be a qb when you just run play action and wait for 8 men in the box to throw?
@45footballhead Oh yeah? How many rushing titles did barry have in that time? How about seasons leading the league in TD's? how about superbowl rings? Superbowl MVPs? Barry was a CHOKE ARTIST....he played well in the Silverdome against shitty teams in his division....put him on grass in december and he fucking sucked. Not to mention he was NO WHERE near as dynamic as Emmitt.
@dawhiteguy622 Please stop talking. You just keep showing your ignorance and stupidity. They both had 4 rushing titles in their career. And again, playing on one of the best teams of alltime is going to get you more tds, more wins and titles. If you cant see the desperity in the talent level of their teams, you really shouldnt call yourself a football fan
@45footballhead Ive already proven to you that Barry had a team, played against pussy defenses, and was a failure in the playoffs, I also proved the Lions went 4-3 without him in the backfield and Dallas went 1-6 without Emmitt, AIkman without Emmitt couldnt do SHIT bc they relied on play action. Barry had a team and so did Emmitt, Emmitt just showed up to play in the playoffs therefor has rings.
@dawhiteguy622 You havent proven shit other than what a dumb bitch you are. Having a couple pro bowlers every now and then is nothing compared to having an entire team that is considered one of the best ever. They (cowboys) were almost all HOFs, Barry was the only HOF on his team. Im done arguing with fools, you can continue to be a delusional tard if you choose. The truth is there, your just choosing not to see it
@45footballhead Everyone will always think Barry was better because he had a flashier playing style. Does it matter who played on what team? Emmitt ran for the most yards of ALL TIME where he was. Both backs were incredible and deserve to honored as two of the best ever.
@45footballhead Ever think that Aikman and irvin are in the HOF because of the Superbowls that EMMITT led them to? Maybe if Barry could perform in the playoffs instead of having games with 13 carries for MINUS 1 YARD then he would have a ring! Jesus Christ EVEN I COULD GET MORE THAN ONE YARD ON 13 CARRIES!!!!
@45footballhead Emmitt had more touchdowns and first downs....now what wins football games??? Yeah, you're not gonna win this arguement bro so just give it a rest.
@Apophis1919 Dont be jealous cause your a no talent douche. I only said I play football cause you said i didnt know what vision was. And now a days everyone thinks their an expert because they watch sportscenter. You talking to me is like me saying to a car mechanic that i know more about cars than him because i watch car shows. YOU ARE A JOKE!!!
@45footballhead LOL I grew up watching football and played thru highschool. at least i knew when to stop when D-League called. LOL. YES YOUR A CAPITAL DOUCHE... I would never take someone's comment seriously if they played D-League? seriously what do they know? they cant even do what the coaches tell em to do.... would u take advice from a stock broker driving a KIA???
@Apophis1919 This comment of yours shows you dont know football. Defenses, believe it or not, in a way prefer the Redzone because it is the hardest spot on the field to score. The limited field acts as an extra defenser in a way limiting the space the offense has to work with. Meaning that allows defenses to pin their ears back and just go after the offense. and when the team your going after only has 1 real deal player, its pretty easy to shut him down.
@Apophis1919 And playoffs, again for good TEAMS. Emmitt played on one of the best teams of all time. If you say he didnt, your showing your ignorance again. Barry was his team for most of his career (except 95 99 when they had an offense) and had little to no help. And you saying barry didnt want a FB really shows you know nothing. Theres a coach called an Offensive coordinator that decides the offense scheme and what players to use, players have no choice in the matter.
@45footballhead obviously it shows your complete ignorance. Like you said, If its BARRYS team and he gets 99-99% of plays then the Head coach or Offensive Cord would ask him what HES comfortable with? Obviously the Lions gameplan was built around Barry and what hes good at.... mr i know football cuz i played DLEAGUE!!!
@45footballhead again going into emmitt last 5yrs? pathetic. below the belt... So remind me since your mr football. what happened to barry when he played the packers? and what did emmitt do? look up the stats for those games especially the playoffs!! mr i know everything.
@Apophis1919 How is it below the belt? Those last 5 years count toward his stats, and once he left his star studded team in Dallas he never reached 1,000 again. And you using a couple games to try to prove a point versus season stats is below the belt. In playoffs, teams could just focus on Barry cause he was the ONLY real threat. You already named part of Emmitts star supporting cast before. Playoff and superbowl wins are about the better team, not the better player
@45footballhead In four career outdoor postseason games, Sanders averaged a paltry 2.8 yards per carry. He never scored a touchdown. And he never ran for more than 65 yards in a single game. With Sanders, the Lions went 0-4 in outdoor playoff games, losing by an average of 17 points. written by ESPN
@45footballhead Take the wild-card playoff game at Lambeau Field in 1994. That season, Sanders averaged 5.7 yards per carry -- the second-highest total of his career. In the first round of the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, on Lambeau Field's frozen tundra,
@45footballhead Sanders set an NFL postseason record for rushing futility. He had 13 carries for minus-one yard. He had four catches that day -- for four yards. Which means he had 16 touches for a total of three yards -- 2.7 yards less than he averaged per rush in the regular season. thats what happened to barry against the packers. sounds like NO RINGS LEBRON JAMES
LOL thats your reply? obviously ur stuck with he retired early is your only excuse. Why did Emmitt lead the league so many yrs in rushing td? Because he had the VISION to see the hole.Barry? he got stuffed pretty much everytime he got in the redzone. Reason for that, i know u cant handle the truth, but he didnt know how to use blockers, especially when u need it the most in the Redzone where space is SMALLER. Obviously ur too young to remember when emmitt held out and watch the cowboys withoutES
@Apophis1919 Look up any coaches, players, owners, or espn fan polls on who the top 100 NFL players of All-Time are and Barry Sanders is always more than a few notches above Emmitt. If you take some time to crunch the numbers and do some real research, youll find that what Barry did is much more impressive than grinding out a 15 year career. Emmitt barely made 1,000 yds 1 time in his last 4 years.
@Apophis1919 You really need to stop talking. All comments you have made have made little to no sense and these "Facts" you state are obviously made up.
@45footballhead FACT only Emmitt made the OLINE look good. every other RB they tried FAILED. i watched the boys all my life. Just like Curtis Martin 4th in alltime rushing, prolly slower than emmitt, but knew how to use his blockers. never had a allpro line. but knew how to find the hole instead of using his athletic ability like barry. thats the real difference between them and barry. Once u understand the football term VISION you'll understand one day.
@Apophis1919 Again, You really need to stop talking. I've played D1 football and play professionally (AFL, Europe). I've forgotten more about football than you could ever wish to know. You repeating yourself over and over isnt going to make me agree with you. Neither are your made up "facts". No doubt Emmitt is great, but Barry is greater. Just because Emmitt had a longer career doesn't make him better. Quality, over quantity.
@45footballhead Your calling out emmitt in his last 4 yrs? LOL Barrys number would of dwindle with age too. Pathetic. LOL and your saying barry was the better pass blocker than emmitt? just stop. Emmitt=more complete back than barry ever was period he didnt have to catch passes in the game, bcuz of Irvin Harper and Novacek.n when he did he catch the ball he averaged 6.3 per catch. which means complete enough for RBs.
@Apophis1919 Dude I HATE when people say "well when Emmitt was with the Cardinals..." Yeah, you mean when he was 33-34-35 years old and STILL gaining 1000 yfs on a SHIT team? You mean AFTER he ran for more yards than ANY RB EVER in the regular AND POSTSEASON? Lets see how many RB's can find a team to play on after the amount of carries Emmitt had in his first 10 seasons. The fact that he was the MAIN man in Dallas for that long and did THAT well is absolutely AMAZING!
@dawhiteguy622 Great, another dipshit to enter the convo with more made up facts. Emmitt never rushed for 1000 with anyone but the star studded cowboys. Also being on an offense that lends you a FB and TE almost every play helps with everything. And your right, he had about 200 more carries than barry did in a 10 year span, yet he was still over 1300 yds short of barry. He had more tds but again, the result of his offense. Barry also had the better receiving #s too
@45footballhead I repeat again Barry didnt want a FB he mainly used a single back formation. like my buddy dawhiteguy said "well Barry averaged 5 ypc and Emmitt only 4.4" Yeah thats true, but you can also have 19 carries for 20 yards then break and 80 yard run and average 5 yards per carry" You still havent giving a reason why Barry disappeared in the redzone and in the playoffs.. CHECK THE FILM n STATS BRO. Mr I know everything cuz im n Dleague football watching film!!! LMFAO!!
@45footballhead IM WAITING on your COMPLETE BACK on what happen to him in the REDZONE??? what happen to him in the Playoffs? Why the complete back only LED the League in RUSHING TDS ONCE! ALL you Keep saying he had a FB and A LINE.when actually it was emmitt that made them look good. BARRY HAD NO VISION JUST GREAT athletic ABILITY. BARRY WAS A CHOKE IN PRESSURE SITUATION PERIOD just like Labrick James
@45footballhead Exactly....Barry didnt have a FB for most of his career because he wouldnt FOLLOW blocking. Emmitt was a power I, type of runner who HIT THE HOLE and had the vision to see where he could gain a yard or two out of nothing...MOVE THE CHAINS and keep the drive going. Detroit HAD to run from spread with Barry to put the defense in Nickle and Dime defense so thier huge wr's could block for him. It was actually an ADVANTAGE for Barry. He could never do power I!
@Apophis1919 Emmitt was not a more complete back. Emmit had only 1 more career rec TD than Barry and had only a little more than 300 career rec yds than Barry on over 150 more receptions. That right there says Barry is more complete, Emmitt had a 150 more catches averaging only 2 yds per catch and scored only 1 more TD. Barry was much more productive. Even rushing, their first 10 seasons Barry averaged 16 less carries, 3.6 Tds less but averaged 130 yds per season more than emmitt.
@45footballhead Ok bud, would you rather have 130 yards or 3.6 tds? lol Barry was nowhere near a complete back. He couldnt run between the tackles, was a HORRIBLE blocker thus he had to come out on 3rd and long, and he couldnt perform in the playoffs for SHIT!
Barry also never had a supporting cast or O line. The same year Barry hit 2,000 yds he was also the league leader in yds lost. People say he isnt the best because he never won a ring, but 1 man can only do so much by himself. Superbowl rings are for great TEAMS, not great individuals. And not only does Barry hold a bunch of Records in the NFL, but he owns just about every rushing record in the NCAA as well. Hands down, BARRY IS THE BEST RB EVER!!!!
@45footballhead Barry is an amazing pure runner. But what sets Emmitt above was he was a complete back. He could run, Catch and Block. He was 3 down back who didn't come off the field and rarely ran backwards. You're forgetting Barry holds the record for most rushes for loss, costing his team heavily with his dancing instead of of driving through when it was needed. Also He was on the top offense in the league in detroit. facing Nickle defenses because of their 3wr base
@panther2552 Im not forgetting anything, if you read both comments I posted. Emmitt is a stud, Barry is studlier. Barry made moves in the backfield cause he had to, he had no line and no threat of a pass game. He also almost never had a TE or FB to block for him. His record for yards loss is just another testament to his struggle. His Offense was only ever ranked in the league because of his numbers. Emmitt had a Hall of Fame O Line, a Hall of Fame QB & WR to help him out.
@45footballhead actually the stats were not high marked because of him but because of their amazing passing game. They had the number 1 passing offense in the league several years behind scott mitchell, Herman moore, Bret Perriman and Johnny Morton. As for having no line. he had 3 pro bowlers for more than a couple years there. His record for yards loss is a testament to his dancing. He rarely knew when to plow for positive yards even if only one. it killed many a detroit drive.
@panther2552 Again, Barry made moves in the backfield because he had to get away from a defender as soon as he was getting the ball. Most of the time for Emmitt, he didnt have to make a move till he was at the second level because of his O line. And where the hell do you get your facts from, in Barry's 10 year career there was only 2 years the Lions passing offense broke the top 15 in the NFL. In '95 they were #2 and '99 they were #9 overall. On average ranked about #20
BARRY IS THE MAN! Emmitt played 6 more seasons than Barry and only put up a little more than 3,000 more career yards than Barry. It took Emmitt over 3 years after Barry retired for Emmitt to pass Barry on the Career Rushing List. Barry NEVER had a season with less than 1,100 yds. Emmitt had 4 seasons of less than 1,000 yds or 6 seasons of less than 1,100 yds. Barry is one of only 6 guys to rush for 2,000+ yds in a season. Emmitt never even reached 1,800 yds.
Why is everybody hatin on GOAT Emmitt... STATS dont lie! more yards than mr. payton... more rushing TD's than Jim Brown... more 1000yd season than barry sanders. can you handle the truth???
@Apophis1919 Stats are very misleading. They dont say how Emmitt was surrounded by Hall of Famers and Barry was surrounded by incompetency. They do show how Barry NEVER rushed for less than 1,100 yds/season (9 of 10 seasons he had 1,300+) while Emmitt had 6 of his 15 seasons with less than 1,100 yds, so that puts Emmitt at 9 and Barry at 10 for 1,100 yds. If Barry played as long as Emmitt did, NOONE would ever touch the NFL rushing record, much like the bar he set in the NCAA.
@45footballhead Your right stats are misleading... because Emmitt had the VISION to see a hole before it was there, rather than Barry trying to do it himself all the time, got the dallas O-line to multiple probowls.. And then that opened up passing... He did more than just run.. No running game,,, no,,, Troy and Irvin HOF... anybody can stop a good passing game Dan Marino???? A good run game wins Championship... Emmitt killed the Packers which Barry didnt even show up.....
@Apophis1919 Your better off not talking, you make no sense at all. With Dallas' Oline my grandma could have put up great numbers. If you gave Barry a FB, he would have been able to make those moves downfield instead of his own backfield. And Emmitt was good because of his Oline, not the other way around.
@45footballhead Its more like the other way around bro.. When they did give barry a fullback,,, he didnt know how to use it.. why do u think he ran without a fullback basically his whole career. ME 1st type a Guy.2nd when emmitt held out cuz contract for a couple of games.everybody thought no biggie cuz the allpro Oline.Wrong!!! couldnt get a 100rushing or pass the ball. like U n everybody else, doesnt realize vision is better than speed! curtis martin anybody? he had no LINE!
@45footballhead Ill give barry this, he was very elusive!! but Emmitt and Curtis Martin where PURE running backs. They have the vision to see the hole before it opens up, run IN-BETWEEN the TACKLES! Knows how to use blockers and fullbacks. Great in pass protection.. Barry just elusiveness
even though walter barry and emmit were great running backs it also takes hard work and dedication to the game they were all in the nl for a long time
At Lorenzorange1 I enjoy a great debate as much as the next guy. I don't know where you are from? How you grew up? Or how old you are? But clearly you're stupid!! I don't fight twitter battles, facebook battles, or youtube battles? Check the name genius!! I leave you in peace, cause if we met I'd leave you in pieces. Kindly refrain from addressing me. I don't know you and you most definitely don't know me.
emmitt is the best outta barry,,, u cant be upset cause he had a o-line.... barry haven no line dosent make him better,,,,,,, do yall remember bo jackson ran up and down the field at ease too
Man try your ranking crap but regardless of what you say Emmitt Smith is the Man #1 no questions asked no one will ever care that he had the best line ever he is still number 1!!! His skills were without question the best even Walter Payton himself was honored when Emmitt passed him in the records!!! Amazing Career Emmitt Smith #22 You Rock!!!
last time i checked Emmit was the all time rushing leader. THats enough proof to show someone that he is the greatest RUNNING back to ever play. I saw plenty of broken tackles in this video to be convinced. If barry sanders is the greatest then he would be on the top of that list. But hes not "numbers dont lie". Maybe emmit did care about the numbers but he also won 3 super bowls. Yea he had an all star OFF line but who cares if he didnt do spectacular moves and shake people. Its all the same.
15,269 yards in a 10 year career. 1,500 yards and double digit touchdowns will get you the pro bowl on just about any given year. Barry AVERAGED THAT FOR A CAREER!! His line was better than advertised and he had capable receivers, however No franchise quarterback, and an owner who got rid of the talent they did have. Emmitt cared about numbers, Barry just wanted to win. Barry could've rushed for 20,000 plus if he wanted. G.O.A.T!!
Emmitt moved the chains on third and short. He was a tremendous competitor and one of the greats. However Barry Sanders was and continues to be the master of improvisation. You mention Emmitt's short yardage prowess. Understand if you put Barry behind a good offensive line with a fullback and gave him the same support Emmitt had Barry would've won championships. If Emmitt had been a Detroit Lion he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did in Dallas nor the numbers Barry put up in Detroit.
Sanders had amazing moves and breakaway speed, but Emmitt was a genius at running behind opposition, which avoids the insane twists Sanders did. Moreover, Emmitt was the one you want when it's 3rd and short and 3rd and short is what keeps the drive alive, not sporadic bursts of yardage and exhibitions of beauty.
Emmitt Smith falls short of being the pure elusive runner Barry was. He also falls short of being quite the power house Walter Payton was. But combined, he was the middle state of perfection neither of them were. That's what makes him great. Personally I like Barry the most of the three. But Emmitt is easily the most complete back there ever was.
@ViewtifulMichael Complete back there ever was?? Um, I'd say that is Walter, period. The guy played quarterback at times. Most people who were around Walter said he was the most talented FOOTBALL player they were ever around, not just back.
@ianmason2003 To each his own. Sorry if I in any way discredited Walter. It's not that I don't think he's great, but I'm a little guy. I can't help but personally relate to the shorter backs. I'm a big fan of Brandon Banks and Noel Devine as well.
@ViewtifulMichael Well Emmitt = 5'9", Walter = 5'10". Certainly not much of a difference. I simply dislike when Emmitt is mentioned in the same breath as Walter. I unfortunately got to see Emmitt play all those years, he's a great back, possibly top 8 of all time, but not even remotely the best. He'll even tell you that.
@ianmason2003 Well. . . perhaps not much of a difference if you're 5'10 or 5'11, but I'm 5'7 so 5'9 is stretchin it for me. I don't think any respectable running back will ever say they're the best. I'm not going to really argue your opinion on it because I personally feel stronger about Barry than Emmitt in the first place. Walter did have his qualities that Emmitt didn't which you already know. The same goes the other way around also, Emmitt was a more elusive back. (max character limit)
@xJohsh what? I think you have slightly too many consonants in your statement. But if you're saying Emmitt Smith isn't the best because he isn't the fastest by a few tics then you are a true ignoramus. In that case, Chris Johnson would be number 1. . . and I think we all know that's a joke.
there was a "what the hell was that" reebok commercial in the mid nineties i have not seen since then. i was looking for it - it think it's here at 5:18
The Cowboys could not have been more obvious - we all knew when Emmitt was getting the ball - the defense knew - John Madden knew - he always seemed to do all right
Emmit Smith is the best HANDS DOWN!!! Does Barry have 3 super bowl rings, does barry have the rushing yards record, does barry have the most touchdowns. NOOOOOOOOO!!! Emmitt is the best. If Barry is best which he's not. Why did he quit.
Barry sanders with no offensive line averaged 5 yards per carry. He had a 2,000 yard football season when the offensive line had some improvement. Emmitt Smith averaged 4.2 yards per carry behind all star lineman his whole career. The most that he got was 1,700 yards a season. Barry had 15,000 yards rushing in 10 years of his career while Emmitt had 18,000 in 15 years of his career. remember that Barry had no fucking offensive line and that Emmitt had one of the best lines ever.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Anybody who is competent to an extent of having the capabilities to judge what is obviously better would agree with me. Based on the stats and comparison you need to be a fucking idiot to believe that Emmitt was better. This is why a lot of football fans agree that Emmitt was an overrated running back. Again look at the stats. Now imagine if Barry Sanders played for the cowboys. Holy shit....
everybody complaining that he had a all star line. he went to the cardinals and did the same shit his last season on a shitty ass team so that just proves his greatness
@braininahat your a fucking idiot. How can you compare emmitt to Jordan? Emmit was a shit back without an o line... Go look up his stats in arizona. In one game against the cowboys he had -1 yards running. Yeah what a fucking running back. Barry Sanders was the greatest running back ever. Walter peyton was the greatest player ever.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan you do realize his last two years with the Cards he was 35 and 36 years old respectively. And running behind the worst line in football. His game against the cowboys was cut short to the one series because he broke his scapula. His 2nd season as a back up he rushed for near 1000 yards behind the perenial worst line his NFL history. If you know anything about footbal then you'd know the boy's offense road on his back.
@panther2552 that was my point. Emmitt behind a shit offensive line sucked, while barry dominated regardless. Plus the arizona line wasnt that bad. At least not as bad as barrys to begin with.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Barry's had 3 pro bowlers. And the Cardinals line is the perenial worst in football. since coming to AZ they had only had 2 1000yard rushers and their pass blocking was horrible. Barry is the all time leader in rushes for loss and costing his team over and over again taking 2nd & shorts and making em 3rd and longs. Also the Lions had the number 1 passing game aswell behind moore, perriman and morton, taking tons of pressure off Barry.
@panther2552 yeah because he has no line he needs to take risks... Of course he is going to lose yards... Barry made 10 pro bowls in 10 years and was the reason for the lions success. What you think that emmitt smith will lose yards while he has 10 yard holes in front of him? LMAO.... come on man. As soon as barry left the lions went to shit. When emmitt left the cowboys were the same...
@FortMinorsBiggestFan 3 pro bowlers is the opposite of having no line. Emmitt was hit in the backfield plenty of times. He just knew to pound it out and get positive yards as opposed to Barry who danced and might break one in ten the other 9 times taking huge losses and turning 2nd and shorts to 3rd and longs. BTW the two years after Barry left the lions put up better records than his last few years there.
@panther2552 1 in 10? thats why he had 1,800 yards a season. Emmitt cant be compared to barry. Oh and how many all star lineman did emmitt have? Come on, 3 lineman in his 10 year career for barry sanders is shit. There a re 5 lineman and the remaining 4 where horse shit, making the line horrible.
@dawhiteguy622 Please show me this "proof" of Barry not blocking, not running up the middle(HE RAN EVERYWHERE), and not showing up in the Play-offs. I'm a fan of both backs but Barry's the better player. Did any of those Lions teams show up in the play-offs? @FortMinorsBiggestFan it's more than just numbers. If the 386 and one touchdown in six play off games didn't impress you. Just how many play off games do you think the Lions would've made without him. Emmitt's awesome, Barry's greater!!
@Train2kill00 How about you show me "proof" of him actually blocking someone? What about the fact that he put his team in 2nd and long and 3rd and long more than ANY other RB in NFL history by losing 1500+ yards over his career by dancing?
The Lions BEAT Dallas in teh 91 playoffs by 21+ points. Face it bro, he NEVER show up in the playoffs when they needed him the most. He performed vs the scrubs in his division and that it mainly it. Emmitts YPC went UP in the playoffs! ENOUGH SAID!
@dawhiteguy622 How can he show up in the playoffs when its obvious that teams stack up on Barry Sanders? When Barry sanders fails the whole team fails. You fucking idiot Barry was a running back, not a quarterback. Emmitt smith had a fucking passing game and the greatest offensive line at the time to rely on so the opposing team didn't know what to expect. If Barry gets shut down then the whole team fails. Teams also worried about him so much that the pass defense suffered as a result.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Also don't forget barry played on the number 1 offense in the league for years in detroit. while detroit ran their three WR sets forcing defense to play nickle against em. The Cowboys were an I form team and Emmitt was the focus so he face 8 man fronts more often than anyone other than maybe Sweetness. Emmitt was a complete back who never needed come off the field. while barry was spelled on passing situations and goalline
@panther2552 number one rushing offense. barry hade more yards on avg than smith did and if he continued he would have easily been much better. Emmitt smith is comparable to Bradshaw who had a fucking team, not joe montana.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan ok wait. so you're saying Joe Montana didn't have a team? Jerry Rice=greatest receiver ever. John Taylor=possible hall of fame receiver. Roger Craig=HOF runningback who could do it all. Tom Rathman one of the greatest fullbacks to play the game. Their Line was amazing and have more than a few perenial pro bowlers. Montana is better because he had all the tools. Much like Emmitt. Emmitt was a complete back while Barry was a pure runner.
@Train2kill00 How about this....in 6 playoff games he had 91 carries for 386 yards and ONE score. That one td came vs Dallas with 2 mins left in the game while up by 14. It was a 44 yard run that is a great highlight run but was essentially pointless at that point. That mean he had 342 yards on teh other 91 carries with NO TDS! That is a horrible average. Emmitt had 1586 yards and 22 tds over 17 games. he played MORE games but still averaged better YPC and YPG....not to mention TDS!
@Train2kill00 really barry was good we all know why he left the game. They did not have the same run style. Really saying one is better than the other is like saying a chevy and ford both weighing 3000 pounds and having 300hp the chevy is faster when they are they same. Hands down mr.smith loved the game more than most any player. I say this because no matter how hurt he was the man had to be forced to sit the bench.
Barry had a shit offensive line, Emmitt runs through holes. Emmitt is a fucking joke when compared to Barry. I would like to know how a running back that has an all star offensive line is better than a running back who needs to actually work hard to get any yards... Emmitt has to be the most overrated running back of all time when it comes to being considered the greatest. That is pathetic.
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover each made 4+ pro bowls. Barry was a fucking JOKE in the playoffs too bro, the guy had 386 yards and ONE td over 6 playoff games! To be the best you have to perform when everything is on the line, not just when you play the shitty ass Bucs or Bears in the regular season. If Emmitt's production was due to his line then explain why the Cowboys went 1-6 without him ad the Lions went 4-3 without Barry? YOU CANT! Barry was a drive killer!
@dawhiteguy622 his offensive line was shit and thats an understatement. In the playoffs teams will emphasize containing barry sanders more than anything else, since he is the whole offense. Emmitt Smith has all star lineman, no wonder why he broke records. Same for peyton manning... Great all star o line from 2000-2006..
They just don't make backs like this anymore.

45footballhead 2 weeks ago
And believe it or not, but Emmitts numbers are better if you leave out his last 5 seasons if your comparing his and barrys first 10 season rushing and receiving AVERAGES. Emmit was god awful most of those last 5. Comparing the first ten as they are or getting their averages shows how much better barry was. Its better for Emmitt if you average it, cause he never even broke 1,800 yards in a season, and he always had alot more carries and receptions but much less yards.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead LOL he never had to run for 1800yds cuz he didnt need to. Do I need to remind you they basically sat him out in the last games. could of easly gotten 1800yds twice! 92=1713yds and 95=1773yds. I back my reasons up. whats ur reason if barry so COMPLETE, why did he ONLY have 1 season where he LED the league in rushing??? the way I see it. He was SHUTOUT in the REDZONE. NO VISION. most of his yards are broken plays,n when he gets down redzone, he disappears.
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Dont waste your time bro, I try to argue this all day with the people who say "well Barry averaged 5 ypc and Emmitt only 4.4" Yeah thats true, but you can also have 19 carries for 20 yards then break and 80 yard run and average 5 yards per carry. Barry was hit or miss and for every hit he missed ALOT, costing his team field position, first downs, drives, and more. A big play threat does nothing but make your defense tired and keep you from getting offensive rythm.
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919
Anyone care to explain? lol
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@dawhiteguy622 Somebody knows what there talking about... im stilll waiting on your response about Barry in the playoffs or against the Packers and what Emmitt did against the Packers mr I know everything about football because i played football=@45footballhead... LMFAO want some advice dont say that again lol.. i know everything cuz i played D-league football LMFAO!!!!!!!
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 And no I dont claim to know everything but I do know football and i do know how to break down football properly. Thats one thing you learn watching hours of film everyday year after year. Maybe you do, maybe you dont. But the problem I have is the structure of your arguement. You keep boiling it down to a few games. What does a few games have to do with a career? Barrys team was never as helpful toward him as Dallas was to Emmitt
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Oh he COULD have huh? So lets keep talking hypothetical then. If Barry COULD have played 5 more seasons, he COULD have easily broken the rushing record (at that time) in 1 more season. Emmitt went into his 12th season to pass Barry, then a little more than his 13th season to pass Walter. With Barry averaging over 1500 per season, and only being about 1400 away, he COULD have gotten it.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead By the time emmitt was in his 10 season he also had played another full seasons worth of playoff games and had another 1586 yards and 22 tds of wear on him!
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 But again, dont take my word for barry being better. Look at any players, coaches or owners poll and the truth is there. Not only do the numbers speak when you know how to read them, but those that played with and against them both always hold barry in higher regard.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Barry has better HIGHLIGHTS...but if you were building a team to win superbowls you would be a FOOL to take Barry, or anyone over Emmitt for that matter. He played in a division that won 5 out of 7 superbowls at one point and was defensively tough. He is the ONLY great back to have his YPC go UP in the playoffs. And he was a touchdown machine (last time I checked you dont get point for crazy jukes and spin moves....just crossing the goal line!)
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@dawhiteguy622 Emmitt average only 1 more TD per season than Barry over the course of their careers. Emmitts YPC went up in the playoffs because the years they won the superbowl (92 93 95) are also the years that aikman and irvin also put up the best numbers of their careers those seasons as well. You have 3 or more guys like that on an offense, its hard to know who will get the ball. Opening opportunities for all 3 to do what they do.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Lol..lets look at Aikman those years, 92 3445 yards 23 tds 89 rating, 93 3100yards 15tds, 99 rating, 95 3300 yards, 16tds, 93 rating. Those numbers are nothing more than MEDIOCRE! Emmitt those years accounted for 6100 yards and 66 tds.....hahahahah, so a RB had more tds than his QB over that time period, face it bro, you wont win this arguement. Also how hard is it to be a qb when you just run play action and wait for 8 men in the box to throw?
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Here's another fun fact for you, the year before Emmitt was drafted they had Aikman, Irvin, Moose, Gogan, Newton on offense...AND THEY WENT 1-15! Think about that one....ONE win! Ever think that Aikman and Irvin are HOF's bc of superbowl title (which EMMITT led them to!)??? Irvin career is almost IDENTICLE to Herman Moore's and AIkman career rating is lower than Qb's like Niel O'donnel, Bernie Kosar, McNabb, Culpepper, Mark Brunell, Elvis Grbac, etc!!!!
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead dude....if you want to compare stats do it with 10 seasons since barry retired after 10...dont be a douche and add in Emmitts last 3 seasons with the fuckings CARDINALS when he was old as shit. Emmitt had more touchdowns in his first 6 seasons than Barry in his 10!!!!
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@dawhiteguy622 I was just comparing the first 10, but the other dude kept calling Barry out on single games and saying playing longer doesnt mean anything. I said the least he could do is compare single seasons or averages since they didnt play the same length. Which was more favorable for Emmitt if he did it that way. Yea Emmitt had more TDs, but Barry killed it in every other category. Always doing more with less: less carries, catches and teammates.

Not to mention he was NO WHERE near as dynamic as Emmitt.

@dawhiteguy622 Please stop talking. You just keep showing your ignorance and stupidity. They both had 4 rushing titles in their career. If you cant see the desperity in the talent level of their teams, you really shouldnt call yourself a football fan
45footballhead 1 week ago
@45footballhead Ive already proven to you that Barry had a team, played against pussy defenses, and was a failure in the playoffs, I also proved the Lions went 4-3 without him in the backfield and Dallas went 1-6 without Emmitt, AIkman without Emmitt couldnt do SHIT bc they relied on play action. Barry had a team and so did Emmitt, Emmitt just showed up to play in the playoffs therefor has rings.
dawhiteguy622 1 week ago
@dawhiteguy622 You havent proven shit other than what a dumb bitch you are. Having a couple pro bowlers every now and then is nothing compared to having an entire team that is considered one of the best ever. They (cowboys) were almost all HOFs, Barry was the only HOF on his team. Im done arguing with fools, you can continue to be a delusional tard if you choose. The truth is there, your just choosing not to see it
45footballhead 1 week ago
@45footballhead Everyone will always think Barry was better because he had a flashier playing style. Does it matter who played on what team? Emmitt ran for the most yards of ALL TIME where he was. Both backs were incredible and deserve to honored as two of the best ever.

@45footballhead Ever think that Aikman and irvin are in the HOF because of the Superbowls that EMMITT led them to? Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 And playoffs, again for good TEAMS. Emmitt played on one of the best teams of all time. If you say he didnt, your showing your ignorance again. Barry was his team for most of his career (except 95 99 when they had an offense) and had little to no help. And you saying barry didnt want a FB really shows you know nothing. Theres a coach called an Offensive coordinator that decides the offense scheme and what players to use, players have no choice in the matter.

@45footballhead again going into emmitt last 5yrs? pathetic. below the belt... So remind me since your mr football. what happened to barry when he played the packers? and what did emmitt do? look up the stats for those games especially the playoffs!! mr i know everything.
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago

Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Take the wild-card playoff game at Lambeau Field in 1994. That season, Sanders averaged 5.7 yards per carry -- the second-highest total of his career. In the first round of the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, on Lambeau Field's frozen tundra,
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Sanders set an NFL postseason record for rushing futility. He had 13 carries for minus-one yard. He had four catches that day -- for four yards. Which means he had 16 touches for a total of three yards -- 2.7 yards less than he averaged per rush in the regular season. thats what happened to barry against the packers. sounds like NO RINGS LEBRON JAMES
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
LOL thats your reply? obviously ur stuck with he retired early is your only excuse. Why did Emmitt lead the league so many yrs in rushing td? Because he had the VISION to see the hole.Barry? he got stuffed pretty much everytime he got in the redzone. Reason for that, i know u cant handle the truth, but he didnt know how to use blockers, especially when u need it the most in the Redzone where space is SMALLER. Obviously ur too young to remember when emmitt held out and watch the cowboys withoutES
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Look up any coaches, players, owners, or espn fan polls on who the top 100 NFL players of All-Time are and Barry Sanders is always more than a few notches above Emmitt. If you take some time to crunch the numbers and do some real research, youll find that what Barry did is much more impressive than grinding out a 15 year career. Emmitt barely made 1,000 yds 1 time in his last 4 years.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
I dont know if you've been watchin the video.. but it looks like emmitt doesnt have much help either from the OLINE either.
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 You really need to stop talking. All comments you have made have made little to no sense and these "Facts" you state are obviously made up.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead FACT only Emmitt made the OLINE look good. every other RB they tried FAILED. i watched the boys all my life. Just like Curtis Martin 4th in alltime rushing, prolly slower than emmitt, but knew how to use his blockers. never had a allpro line. but knew how to find the hole instead of using his athletic ability like barry. thats the real difference between them and barry. Once u understand the football term VISION you'll understand one day.
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Again, You really need to stop talking. I've played D1 football and play professionally (AFL, Europe). I've forgotten more about football than you could ever wish to know. You repeating yourself over and over isnt going to make me agree with you. Neither are your made up "facts". No doubt Emmitt is great, but Barry is greater. Just because Emmitt had a longer career doesn't make him better. Quality, over quantity.
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Your calling out emmitt in his last 4 yrs? LOL Barrys number would of dwindle with age too. Pathetic. LOL and your saying barry was the better pass blocker than emmitt? just stop. Emmitt=more complete back than barry ever was period he didnt have to catch passes in the game, bcuz of Irvin Harper and Novacek.n when he did he catch the ball he averaged 6.3 per catch. which means complete enough for RBs.
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Dude I HATE when people say "well when Emmitt was with the Cardinals..." Yeah, you mean when he was 33-34-35 years old and STILL gaining 1000 yfs on a SHIT team? You mean AFTER he ran for more yards than ANY RB EVER in the regular AND POSTSEASON? Lets see how many RB's can find a team to play on after the amount of carries Emmitt had in his first 10 seasons. The fact that he was the MAIN man in Dallas for that long and did THAT well is absolutely AMAZING!
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
@dawhiteguy622 Great, another dipshit to enter the convo with more made up facts. Emmitt never rushed for 1000 with anyone but the star studded cowboys. Also being on an offense that lends you a FB and TE almost every play helps with everything. And your right, he had about 200 more carries than barry did in a 10 year span, yet he was still over 1300 yds short of barry. He had more tds but again, the result of his offense. Barry also had the better receiving #s too
45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead I repeat again Barry didnt want a FB he mainly used a single back formation. like my buddy dawhiteguy said "well Barry averaged 5 ypc and Emmitt only 4.4" Yeah thats true, but you can also have 19 carries for 20 yards then break and 80 yard run and average 5 yards per carry" You still havent giving a reason why Barry disappeared in the redzone and in the playoffs.. CHECK THE FILM n STATS BRO. Mr I know everything cuz im n Dleague football watching film!!! LMFAO!!
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead IM WAITING on your COMPLETE BACK on what happen to him in the REDZONE??? what happen to him in the Playoffs? Why the complete back only LED the League in RUSHING TDS ONCE! ALL you Keep saying he had a FB and A LINE.when actually it was emmitt that made them look good. BARRY HAD NO VISION JUST GREAT athletic ABILITY. BARRY WAS A CHOKE IN PRESSURE SITUATION PERIOD just like Labrick James
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago

45footballhead 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Ok bud, would you rather have 130 yards or 3.6 tds? lol Barry was nowhere near a complete back. He couldnt run between the tackles, was a HORRIBLE blocker thus he had to come out on 3rd and long, and he couldnt perform in the playoffs for SHIT!
dawhiteguy622 2 weeks ago
barry was definitely the best pure runner. but if it's 40 degrees, the superbowl, and i need to pound the ball 40 times, i'll take emmitt.
mangoshakess 3 weeks ago
Dam look at that skill at 2:40. It was all Emmitt Smith guys.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 3 weeks ago
Barry also never had a supporting cast or O line. The same year Barry hit 2,000 yds he was also the league leader in yds lost. People say he isnt the best because he never won a ring, but 1 man can only do so much by himself. Superbowl rings are for great TEAMS, not great individuals. And not only does Barry hold a bunch of Records in the NFL, but he owns just about every rushing record in the NCAA as well. Hands down, BARRY IS THE BEST RB EVER!!!!
45footballhead 4 weeks ago
@45footballhead Barry is an amazing pure runner. But what sets Emmitt above was he was a complete back. He could run, Catch and Block. He was 3 down back who didn't come off the field and rarely ran backwards. You're forgetting Barry holds the record for most rushes for loss, costing his team heavily with his dancing instead of of driving through when it was needed. Also He was on the top offense in the league in detroit. facing Nickle defenses because of their 3wr base
panther2552 3 weeks ago
@panther2552 Im not forgetting anything, if you read both comments I posted. Emmitt is a stud, Barry is studlier. Barry made moves in the backfield cause he had to, he had no line and no threat of a pass game. He also almost never had a TE or FB to block for him. His record for yards loss is just another testament to his struggle. His Offense was only ever ranked in the league because of his numbers. Emmitt had a Hall of Fame O Line, a Hall of Fame QB & WR to help him out.
45footballhead 3 weeks ago
@45footballhead actually the stats were not high marked because of him but because of their amazing passing game. They had the number 1 passing offense in the league several years behind scott mitchell, Herman moore, Bret Perriman and Johnny Morton. As for having no line. he had 3 pro bowlers for more than a couple years there. His record for yards loss is a testament to his dancing. He rarely knew when to plow for positive yards even if only one. it killed many a detroit drive.
panther2552 3 weeks ago
@panther2552 Again, Barry made moves in the backfield because he had to get away from a defender as soon as he was getting the ball. Most of the time for Emmitt, he didnt have to make a move till he was at the second level because of his O line. And where the hell do you get your facts from, in Barry's 10 year career there was only 2 years the Lions passing offense broke the top 15 in the NFL. In '95 they were #2 and '99 they were #9 overall. On average ranked about #20
45footballhead 3 weeks ago

Apophis1919 1 month ago
45footballhead 3 weeks ago
@45footballhead Your right stats are misleading... because Emmitt had the VISION to see a hole before it was there, rather than Barry trying to do it himself all the time, got the dallas O-line to multiple probowls.. And then that opened up passing... He did more than just run.. No running game,,, no,,, Troy and Irvin HOF... anybody can stop a good passing game Dan Marino???? A good run game wins Championship... Emmitt killed the Packers which Barry didnt even show up.....
Apophis1919 3 weeks ago
@Apophis1919 Your better off not talking, you make no sense at all. With Dallas' Oline my grandma could have put up great numbers. If you gave Barry a FB, he would have been able to make those moves downfield instead of his own backfield. And Emmitt was good because of his Oline, not the other way around.
45footballhead 3 weeks ago
@45footballhead Its more like the other way around bro.. When they did give barry a fullback,,, he didnt know how to use it.. why do u think he ran without a fullback basically his whole career. ME 1st type a Guy.2nd when emmitt held out cuz contract for a couple of games.everybody thought no biggie cuz the allpro Oline.Wrong!!! couldnt get a 100rushing or pass the ball. like U n everybody else, doesnt realize vision is better than speed! curtis martin anybody? he had no LINE!
Apophis1919 2 weeks ago
@45footballhead Ill give barry this, he was very elusive!! but Emmitt and Curtis Martin where PURE running backs. They have the vision to see the hole before it opens up, run IN-BETWEEN the TACKLES! Knows how to use blockers and fullbacks. Great in pass protection.. Barry just elusiveness

last time i checked Emmit was the all time rushing leader. Its all the same.
jdls12 1 month ago
15,269 yards in a 10 year career. 1,500 yards and double digit touchdowns will get you the pro bowl on just about any given year. Barry AVERAGED THAT FOR A CAREER!! His line was better than advertised and he had capable receivers, however No franchise quarterback, and an owner who got rid of the talent they did have. Emmitt cared about numbers, Barry just wanted to win. Barry could've rushed for 20,000 plus if he wanted. G.O.A.T!!

Lorenzorange1 1 month ago

Odhinn222 1 month ago
Emmitt Smith falls short of being the pure elusive runner Barry was. He also falls short of being quite the power house Walter Payton was. But combined, he was the middle state of perfection neither of them were. That's what makes him great. Personally I like Barry the most of the three. But Emmitt is easily the most complete back there ever was.
ViewtifulMichael 1 month ago 7
@ViewtifulMichael Complete back there ever was?? Um, I'd say that is Walter, period. The guy played quarterback at times. Most people who were around Walter said he was the most talented FOOTBALL player they were ever around, not just back.
ianmason2003 1 month ago
@ianmason2003 To each his own. Sorry if I in any way discredited Walter. It's not that I don't think he's great, but I'm a little guy. I can't help but personally relate to the shorter backs. I'm a big fan of Brandon Banks and Noel Devine as well.
ViewtifulMichael 1 month ago
@ViewtifulMichael Well Emmitt = 5'9", Walter = 5'10". Certainly not much of a difference. I simply dislike when Emmitt is mentioned in the same breath as Walter. I unfortunately got to see Emmitt play all those years, he's a great back, possibly top 8 of all time, but not even remotely the best. He'll even tell you that.
ianmason2003 1 month ago
@ianmason2003 Well. . . perhaps not much of a difference if you're 5'10 or 5'11, but I'm 5'7 so 5'9 is stretchin it for me. I don't think any respectable running back will ever say they're the best. I'm not going to really argue your opinion on it because I personally feel stronger about Barry than Emmitt in the first place. Walter did have his qualities that Emmitt didn't which you already know. The same goes the other way around also, Emmitt was a more elusive back. (max character limit)
ViewtifulMichael 1 month ago
@ViewtifulMichael you have good points, but I'm not seeing any reason to discredit Emmitt with them per se.

xJohsh 1 month ago
@xJohsh what? I think you have slightly too many consonants in your statement. But if you're saying Emmitt Smith isn't the best because he isn't the fastest by a few tics then you are a true ignoramus. In that case, Chris Johnson would be number 1. . . and I think we all know that's a joke.

Emmitt Smith. You are a freaking beast and probably one of the best RB's ever in NFL history and my freaking hero. Even though I'm white.
ibotah 2 months ago
Barry sanders with no offensive line averaged 5 yards per carry. He had a 2,000 yard football season when the offensive line had some improvement. Emmitt Smith averaged 4.2 yards per carry behind all star lineman his whole career. The most that he got was 1,700 yards a season. Barry had 15,000 yards rushing in 10 years of his career while Emmitt had 18,000 in 15 years of his career. remember that Barry had no fucking offensive line and that Emmitt had one of the best lines ever.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Anybody who is competent to an extent of having the capabilities to judge what is obviously better would agree with me. Based on the stats and comparison you need to be a fucking idiot to believe that Emmitt was better. This is why a lot of football fans agree that Emmitt was an overrated running back. Again look at the stats. Now imagine if Barry Sanders played for the cowboys. Holy shit....

braininahat 2 months ago 2
@braininahat your a fucking idiot. How can you compare emmitt to Jordan? Emmit was a shit back without an o line... Go look up his stats in arizona. In one game against the cowboys he had -1 yards running. Yeah what a fucking running back. Barry Sanders was the greatest running back ever. Walter peyton was the greatest player ever.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan you do realize his last two years with the Cards he was 35 and 36 years old respectively. And running behind the worst line in football. His game against the cowboys was cut short to the one series because he broke his scapula. His 2nd season as a back up he rushed for near 1000 yards behind the perenial worst line his NFL history. If you know anything about footbal then you'd know the boy's offense road on his back.
panther2552 2 months ago
@panther2552 that was my point. Emmitt behind a shit offensive line sucked, while barry dominated regardless. Plus the arizona line wasnt that bad. At least not as bad as barrys to begin with.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Barry's had 3 pro bowlers. And the Cardinals line is the perenial worst in football. since coming to AZ they had only had 2 1000yard rushers and their pass blocking was horrible. Barry is the all time leader in rushes for loss and costing his team over and over again taking 2nd & shorts and making em 3rd and longs. Also the Lions had the number 1 passing game aswell behind moore, perriman and morton, taking tons of pressure off Barry.
panther2552 2 months ago
@panther2552 yeah because he has no line he needs to take risks... Of course he is going to lose yards... Barry made 10 pro bowls in 10 years and was the reason for the lions success. What you think that emmitt smith will lose yards while he has 10 yard holes in front of him? LMAO.... come on man. As soon as barry left the lions went to shit. When emmitt left the cowboys were the same...
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan 3 pro bowlers is the opposite of having no line. Emmitt was hit in the backfield plenty of times. He just knew to pound it out and get positive yards as opposed to Barry who danced and might break one in ten the other 9 times taking huge losses and turning 2nd and shorts to 3rd and longs. BTW the two years after Barry left the lions put up better records than his last few years there.
panther2552 2 months ago
@panther2552 1 in 10? thats why he had 1,800 yards a season. Emmitt cant be compared to barry. Oh and how many all star lineman did emmitt have? Come on, 3 lineman in his 10 year career for barry sanders is shit. There a re 5 lineman and the remaining 4 where horse shit, making the line horrible.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
This is still my favorite Emmitt tribute -- and he's still the greatest RB the game has ever seen.
braininahat 2 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 Please show me this "proof" of Barry not blocking, not running up the middle(HE RAN EVERYWHERE), and not showing up in the Play-offs. I'm a fan of both backs but Barry's the better player. Did any of those Lions teams show up in the play-offs? @FortMinorsBiggestFan it's more than just numbers. If the 386 and one touchdown in six play off games didn't impress you. Just how many play off games do you think the Lions would've made without him. Emmitt's awesome, Barry's greater!!
Train2kill00 2 months ago
@Train2kill00 How about you show me "proof" of him actually blocking someone? What about the fact that he put his team in 2nd and long and 3rd and long more than ANY other RB in NFL history by losing 1500+ yards over his career by dancing?
The Lions BEAT Dallas in teh 91 playoffs by 21+ points. Face it bro, he NEVER show up in the playoffs when they needed him the most. He performed vs the scrubs in his division and that it mainly it. Emmitts YPC went UP in the playoffs! ENOUGH SAID!
dawhiteguy622 2 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 How can he show up in the playoffs when its obvious that teams stack up on Barry Sanders? When Barry sanders fails the whole team fails. You fucking idiot Barry was a running back, not a quarterback. Emmitt smith had a fucking passing game and the greatest offensive line at the time to rely on so the opposing team didn't know what to expect. If Barry gets shut down then the whole team fails. Teams also worried about him so much that the pass defense suffered as a result.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Also don't forget barry played on the number 1 offense in the league for years in detroit. while detroit ran their three WR sets forcing defense to play nickle against em. The Cowboys were an I form team and Emmitt was the focus so he face 8 man fronts more often than anyone other than maybe Sweetness. Emmitt was a complete back who never needed come off the field. while barry was spelled on passing situations and goalline
panther2552 2 months ago
@panther2552 number one rushing offense. barry hade more yards on avg than smith did and if he continued he would have easily been much better. Emmitt smith is comparable to Bradshaw who had a fucking team, not joe montana.
FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan ok wait. so you're saying Joe Montana didn't have a team? Jerry Rice=greatest receiver ever. John Taylor=possible hall of fame receiver. Roger Craig=HOF runningback who could do it all. Tom Rathman one of the greatest fullbacks to play the game. Their Line was amazing and have more than a few perenial pro bowlers. Montana is better because he had all the tools. Much like Emmitt. Emmitt was a complete back while Barry was a pure runner.
panther2552 2 months ago
@Train2kill00 How about this....in 6 playoff games he had 91 carries for 386 yards and ONE score. That one td came vs Dallas with 2 mins left in the game while up by 14. It was a 44 yard run that is a great highlight run but was essentially pointless at that point. That mean he had 342 yards on teh other 91 carries with NO TDS! That is a horrible average. Emmitt had 1586 yards and 22 tds over 17 games. he played MORE games but still averaged better YPC and YPG....not to mention TDS!

FortMinorsBiggestFan 2 months ago
@FortMinorsBiggestFan Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover each made 4+ pro bowls. Barry was a fucking JOKE in the playoffs too bro, the guy had 386 yards and ONE td over 6 playoff games! To be the best you have to perform when everything is on the line, not just when you play the shitty ass Bucs or Bears in the regular season. If Emmitt's production was due to his line then explain why the Cowboys went 1-6 without him ad the Lions went 4-3 without Barry? YOU CANT! Barry was a drive killer!
dawhiteguy622 2 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 his offensive line was shit and thats an understatement. In the playoffs teams will emphasize containing barry sanders more than anything else, since he is the whole offense.
