I can't stop playing this over and over! It is so awesome! Reminds me of lots of nights dancin' to my favorite local country rock band, which played this music a lot. It makes me want to gp out dancin' like I used to! I am a livin' room dancer now, that wears out way too soon! I used to dance for hours and hours to this kind of music, and not stop, unless I needed another beer!
One of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups, Poco had their roots in the dying embers of Buffalo Springfield. After Neil Young and Stephen Stills, the co-founders of that group, exited in the spring of 1968, only guitarist/singer Richie Furay and bassist Jim Messina remained to complete the group's swan song,
Wait! I had this album somewhere in the misty 70's. I remember the riff in the chorus, or bridge, playing it on my acoustic guitar after some long night without sleep in some camping ground . . . .maybe I played the whole thing . . . .
"I think you would be shocked at how many Eagles fans have no idea Tim Schmit was with Poco, or anything about Poco or that they even existed.. for that matter, Such a shame.... The Eagles got all the glory, fame, & money!"
Not telling me anything that I don't know or disagree. Concur fully but that's the way it goes. Lot of good bands like the Byrds, Burittos, NRPS and Poco that made the Eagles success possible. The Eagles very nearly didn't make it either. That's another story though.
"...I guess I just hate how Schmit is given no credit in this band when he was a major part of the Poco legacy ..."
Don't know who you'd be listening to that knows anything about the band yet gives Schmidt no credit. Hellacious bass player, great singer and really, really good songwriter. Love his work and recognize his longevity. Just feel Meisner (however short his stay) was their first bass player.
@bendbadgersteve I think you would be shocked at how many Eagles fans have no idea Tim Schmit was with Poco, or anything about Poco or that they even existed.. for that matter, Such a shame.... The Eagles got all the glory, fame, & money!
You might consider Schmidt their first bass player. I really don't. Owned the first album. Read the liner note and I doubt Meisner got there by buyin' the beer.
@bendbadgersteve I dug up the album before I wrote this, & Meisner is not listed as a Poco member. Go look at it. I guess I just hate how Schmit is given no credit in this band when he was a major part of the Poco legacy Yeah, Meisner was there first, but only a few months. Sorry if I bugged you. Peace out!
OK, here's the deal. Bass player on this tune, Timothy B Schmit. Ever hear of him? Jim Messina, HHMMMM. Rusty Young....name sounds familiar. Richie Furay???? along with George Grantham. Poco's first incarnation was their best as these founding members went on to make great contributions to American music. Besides, this song just plain ol' kicks ass.
@bendbadgersteve Randy Meisner didn't even stick around to finish the 1st album. He's not on the cover or listed as a band member. Jim Messina had to finish the bass line for the album. Mesiner had a liner note. Tim joined Poco in Sept 69 & did 11 albums with them, so even though Tim didn't start out as bass player, he is considered the 1st bass player for Poco. Randy left for the Eagles, not really "founding member" Richie Furay & Jim Messina started Poco
Beatles may actually have pointed the way with ACT NATURALLY and KANSAS CITY.
The roots were obviously always there in America but but rock n' roll and then, more specifically, the British invasion caught the fascination of kids here-and those guys were kids too.
Once they saw the possibilities you saw the first hints with stuff like Hey, Mr. Spaceman and Kind Woman. Took off from there...
All the great Country Rock of the late 60's-early 70's...Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, New Riders of the Purple Sage, even The Dead. They laid the groundwork with the sound that The Eagles (another fine band) took to the bank. Other bands, like Pure Prairie League and Ozark Mountain Daredevils were to follow. Terrific songs, virtuoso playing, and those harmonies. What an explosion of amazing music.
You start to realize how much better the American foundation was than the English Invasionn. The harmonies and musicianship of Buffalo Sprinfield, Byrds, Poco, CSNY, Eagles, Loggins/Messina, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, all put the Brits to shame. I love this music.
that's such a stupid comment-music is about collaboration, not competition. British bands were/are just as capable as american bands, and they re-invented our rock 'n' roll and made it better and inspired american bands.
You misinterpreted foxmulder77's statement. The Brit's did not create "country rock". Those bands that he mentioned sweated a starved their life's to put out a new sound that was just evolving. The Brits were leading the way in rock n roll. Cream, Led Zeppelin were leaders in that field. But please do remember all the American Rockers that laid down some awesome tracks like Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and many more.
i would have loved to see these guys open for the grateful dead. what a party!!!

Poco's first incarnation actually had Randy Meisner on bass so I hope you're not including Timmy Schmidt there.

@ForeverYoung58 If you look at the Poco Family tree, you'll see that most of the bands you just named spun off from Poco

@ForeverYoung58 Yes. Where did it go? You imply it was absorbed. Yep. now, junk.
