  • I had this ten days ago, your face feels real numb afterwards cause of the nerve damage, it doesn't hurt :)

  • Just got this surgery last thursday at NYU under Dr. Cutting and Dr. Grayson, the music totally gives the severity of the surgery justice, I am only 5 days out and my face is still the size of a watermelon, can't wait to see what I'll look like whenthe swelling subsides.

  • @shenkm87 I just had this done on Monday, and yeah the swelling is ridiculous. Just like you I cant wait to see what i look like when it goes down. Also the music also shows the severity of the surgery.

  • hahahaha its funny how the jaw giggles when it's loose! im only 11! What if they pull the whole jaw off?

  • hahaha aaaaaaah just thinking about someone doing that while i'm in the twilight zone is crazy! I have to get surgery at some point, hopefully it's not this kind. I think i'm just getting rods in my lower jaw =/

  • the music

    is catastrophic

  • the speed made it seem a bit... violent? although it looks painful and utter agony, the patient will feel NOTHING. The only thing i remember after waking up from this surgery is DAMN I'M SO DROWSY!! And then knocked out to sleep again... i felt nothing on my face for 2-3 weeks, and by the time my face felt something, it was already painless.

  • OH SHIT! THAT'S GOTTA HURT SOOOOOO BAAAAADDDD !

  • damn your buccal infiltrations must be good - really though respect - can't wait to start max-fax!

  • so i'm guessing this was to correct an underbite.... gruesome. i'm supposed to have the mandibular advancement next summer... i hope it doesn't require the same machinery as in this video.... made me kinda light-headed... i had no idea the surgery was this involved

  • I´m Maxilofacial Surgeon in Spain. I am afraid with this video. It seems to be so gore. Yousee so fast and with that music. It´s not so bad. I tell you. For you that are waiting for the surgery. Don´t be afraid, is quite more soft.

  • I got this surgery 7 months ago... I'm getting my braces off tomorrow. I've never seen these videos before becaus eI refused to watch them before the surgery.. what a life changing experience that was.

  • oh godd.. did they put you to sleep so you won't feel the pain caused by the bone cutting?

  • I had a similar surgery this past July. I could manage to watch these video's 2 years before, and now 9 weeks after. But anytime in between then it made me sick to my stomach.

  • why the surgeons are in rush?

  • People should understand that this is the kind of experience that awaits you if you get punched hard in the face. Consider that the next time you are thinking about getting into a bare knuckle fist fight with someone.

  • Oh god that was me 2 days ago hahaha

  • I kinda like the music for this vid. Not my usual taste in music, but the surgery is kinda brutal and so is the music. It all works. I'm scrubbing one of these tomorrow! I'm a sugical tech and if you guys see the results of this procedure in person, you will be amazed. It is something else to see someone's face go from before to after in a matter of a few hours, with the result usually being very dramatic.

  • yeah, i'm getting this surgery in 6 days... that looks AWFUL.

  • loved it loved it ....thx for sharing

  • Really, the music is not needed.

  • @lty2k84 Really, your comment is not needed.

  • @vindogrks1 It's called an opinion. FYI

  • @vindogrks1 Great music, Rob Zombie is amazing.

  • @lty2k84 Mute it

  • @kennygadams Its actually a great song. What is funny is that some surgeons, listen to this music, which I think its somewhat scary. Though every surgeon has their own taste, and mode to perform by. Myself, I enjoy classical music, at least it keeps me calm when performing.

  • i had this done 3 weeks ago.. wouldnt do it again

  • i had the same surgery just 2 weeks ago and i remember watching all these videos and worrying and really re-thinking my options

the recovery period is loooooooooongg! but the whole surgery is still fascinating to me

  • i have to have this done in a few weeks im scared to death my lower jaw is being done too,the doc said a liquid and basically baby food diet for 8 weeks i wont be wired shut but will my jaw will be fixed together with elastics for 8 weeks,im scared of the pain and not being able to breathe as im a mouth breather cause of my nose being plugged all the time cause of my jaw

  • 1:34 ooooouuch! i wanna get this done but damn looks nasty :(

  • I'm getting my surgery done tomorrow...now i'm so scared. I can't even sleep.

  • Tomorrow is two weeks since I had upper, lower and chin advancement. Swelling has gone down alot, but still there a bit and still kinda numb. Couldn't watch before, but thought I'd give it a try to watch now that it's over. Just like AeroAg93, I too cringe thinking that's what happened. No wonder my face looked like it did right after! I was so swollen I could barely see out of my eyes. Feeling way more "normal" this week, but still have a ways to go.

  • how much does it cost??

  • getting this surgery in june

  • I just had this surgery, and the video made me giggle because i love Rob Zombie haha! this is grim, to believe they were doing this in my mouth 2 days ago! haha!

  • Comment removed

  • omg im literally crying from watching this...im so scared now!

  • Why is there music?

We hate it when the value of surgery is blown to pieces through the use of music

    I'm really disappointed

even surgeries are like a disco now

  • This is pretty interesting, thanks for sharing. I thought the surgery would be more complex and cause more scar tissue, so it's just basically sneaking up through the mouth's tissue. I'm curious why bone graph wasn't use, unless that's because the bone will just adjust to the changes.

  • hmmm i probably shouldnt have watched this before my surgery T_T

  • Going to get lower jaw surgery they have to move my forward

  • I had this surgery about two and a half years ago now. I'm glad I didn't watch any videos like these till after the surgery! But I think the general consensus is that anyone who gets this done is always glad they did. I certainly am. The recovery period is difficult at first but after the first week or two it just gets easier and easier. Especially when you move onto solid food again! Best of luck to anyone about to have this surgery done.

  • @sean2088 how much did it cost you? I am currently trying to figgure out the cost of this procedure. Thank you

  • @GearsChick I'm from the UK, so I was lucky enough to get the whole thing done for free. I think it can get quite expensive if you have it done privately.

  • Wow, this is crazy to watch! I had this surgery back in 1996. Best thing I could've ever done. No more TMJ, bite is now straight, even changed the way I looked...it shortened my face & tilted my nose up slightly. Recovery was def. NOT FUN! Lots of panic attacks, b/c my mouth was bound completely shut for first few weeks & had to eat w/ a syringe during that time. LOL! Full recovery was a few months & swelling lasted about 5 months. It was so very worth it though! Thanks for posting this! :)

  • as a maxilofacial surgeon i tell u that it is a routine simple surgeory for maxfaxs, sometimes quite simpler than extraction of an impacted lower third molar! so dont panic!

  • So that iron plate replace the bone connection? In other words ur bones doesnt grew back to each other again?? What about the plate? Will it trigger of the detector at the airport?

  • 1:14 IS THAT SERIOUSLY A WOODEN SURGERY TOOL O_O

  • I had a maxillary osteotomy (maxillary advancement), genioplasty and all four wisdom teeth out in March 2009. My jaw and bite is excellent and it has changed my whole life. After care is very important and the more input you have about this the better - I had a dietician manage my food and nutrition (very hard to eat anything for weeks) and several follow-ups with an oral medicine specialist to advise on cleaning and wound care. Swelling was slightly there after 12 months, but gone after 18.

  • oh my god, future, this is me

  • I had this done four years ago, and my wisdom teeth removed. I took about two weeks off of school even though I didn't need that long. Then two years ago (@ 18) I had a maxilliary osteotomy which of course took much longer to recover from, but I can honestly say it was all worth it. Only problem I find now is that I have very thick scar tissue at the back of my mouth and I sometimes find it gets in the way of my chewing... :)

  • thinking about having this surgery alittle scared, and wanted 2 know if anyone know how long it takes & if u have 2 b hospitalized.

  • having this done on monday, just as much excited as nervous!

  • @MWarren221994 all the best. remember to take it easy, rest and keep it clean.

  • I can't believe I just had this done, less than 3 monthes ago! I would do it again in a heartbeat, but its still sooo scary!

  • OMG dude i can't believe i watched this... im just wondering do you know how much milimeters did they shift your jaw forward?

  • omg!!!!! ...i am getting that surgery february 10 holy shit ...i am frightened!

  • HOLY CRAP>>>>YIKES

  • How did you get them to record this?

I want them to record my surgery ( own personal use :p )

but, I don't think they will.

I have to get this in the early months next year.

  • WTF...

  • I has this surgery 16 months ago, and I am STILL numb on the one side of my cheek.

  • ya my brother got this sugery but has not taken any medicine crazy kid

  • How Bad Did This Hurt Afterwards.? How Long Did The Swelling Last. How Long Does It Take To Heal.?? I'm Really Scared. I Gotta Get This Done. So Could You Give Me Some Advice Please And Thank You.

  • @xxMzBrdyxx - The pain depends a lot on what you have done. There are several variations of this surgery from just upper jaw, just lower jaw, both jaws, and even splitting the upper palette into multiple pieces to widen or shrink it. You'll be on pretty heavy pain meds for at least a week or two. I would take two weeks off from work or school. Swelling of your face varies but should be 80% gone in six weeks. Numbness around your mouth will go away slowly for a year.

  • @AeroAg93 Alright Thanks Much (:

  • im about to have it done in january 2011 ! actually IM having upper jaw and lower jaw done!!! eeeeekkkk

  • I had it 2 weeks ago (upper and lower jaw surgery) My lips and side of my nose are still swollen and numb..is it normal?

  • I had both upper, lower jaw surgery +geniplasty...anyways my upper lips and sides of my nose are still swollen and numb (cant close my mouth properly because of hat)...is that normal yu think? Me too before surgery I couldnt watch bit now thats done I have no problem to watch it ;)

  • @profbof24 I think I might need both lower and upper jaw aswell...If you dont mind how much did it cost to get both bottom and top done. I would appreciate it very much thanks.

  • I am having this surgery on 9/14/10. Dreading it a lot at my age!

  • A "more gentle way" to remove your jaw? LOL. No, there isn't. Sorry.

I had the surgery nearly a year ago now and am so happy I had the proceedure.

  • fascinating - my son had upper and law jaw surgery four weeks ago. He had a relapse within a couple of hours of surgery being completed and had to have a further op a week later to reposition.

  • @kathrynwatersful My best to your son. Some residual swelling will remain for quite a long time. Now that it's been about a year, the swelling is finally all gone. I'm really happy with the results and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

  • @vindogrks1 Thanks for your reply. I will pass your best wishes onto my son. His swelling isn't too bad now - just some puffiness but he is more or less wired shut and will have to remain so for a few more weeks. Thanks again.

  • @kathrynwatersful - I had the same thing happen! My relapse occurred sometime between leaving the OR and when I got to my hospital bed. They had to put in stronger plates in my upper jaw as I must of moved them. Hope your son is doing well.

  • @AeroAg93 thanks so much for your reply. I have been so worried about my son.

The swelling does seem to be subsiding - just some puffiness around the jaw area. His Orthodontist has replaced his wires this past week with flexible ones. He is more or less wired shut and will have to remain so for a few more weeks. So liquid diet only but it has got to be right. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

  • @kathrynwatersful Around 80% of the swelling should be gone by one month out. Steroids help (Methylprednisolone dose pack). Watch for swelling increases or unsymmetrical swelling as that could be a sign of infection. The remaining 20% around the plates takes months (around three-six) to subside. I recommend visiting the orthognathicsurgerysupport yahoo group at groups.yahoo.com as we have a bunch of knowledgeable jaw surgery veterans there :).

  • @AeroAg93 thanks so much for this information - it is very helpful. I really appreciate it.

  • @AeroAg93 My son went to see the surgeon today - he has to go into hospital again - surgeon says that there is some infection around one of the plates, so it has to be taken out. Will get a date for going in again in next few days. So a bit of a setback

for my son but it has to be done.

  • @kathrynwatersful Sorry to hear that! Tell your son to hang in there. Hopefully its just drain and IV antibiotic type work.

  • @AeroAg93 Yeah, thanks for your reply. I will keep you posted. I will let you know when he gets the date to go in again.

  • @kathrynwatersful The same thing happend to me. mine was 23 days out of 1st surgery. It is common to have a relapse if the bones are thin. Best wishes for your son, My experence with my second surgery was way more painful. I am 6 months post op and things are where they need to be, i have to wear band on my braces.

  • @eulesssucks Thanks so much for your reply. My son is 5 months post op and seems to be doing ok - he is going into hosp. next Tues. to have one of the metal plates removed. Should only be in overnight, hopefully.

He is still having orthodontic treatment to get the overlap right on the l.hand side.. I think he too will be glad when the braces can come off. By the way, he still can't taste very much and has to be very careful what he eats - not too chewy. Best wishes to you.

  • @kathrynwatersful Poor kid, i hope he recovers smoothly! I am sure his mouth will be sensitive, especially since he has another surgery comeing up.. So does this make 3 surgeries? How old is he btw? My teeth were really sensitive for like 5 months.. well thanks for the wishes.. hope your son does well

  • @eulesssucks The hospital rang yesterday and canc. the surgery - put it back until next Tues, now. So, still waiting. Yes this will be 3 surgeries in total. My son is 25. Thanks for your good wishes and all good wishes to you.

  • Had this surgery in December 2009. Couldn't watch these videos before, bailed out and had panic attacks. Watching them afterwords is fascinating, yet I still cringe.

  • @AeroAg93 Haha. Hope I didn't freak you out too bad before your surgery. In retrospect the proceedure wasn't so bad though, huh?

  • @vindogrks1 - This surgery was the best thing I ever did. My severe sleep apnea is cured. The recovery from this surgery was the hard part. The pain goes away in a week or so. Eating right during the liquid diet, getting used to your new face, dealing with the stiff jaw from being banded shut, trusting that the numbness will eventually go away, etc. My blog is at robsjaws.blogspot.com if anyone is interested in reading about my experience. Thanks again for posting this video!

  • @AeroAg93 my bro got this done a few days ago and has not even taken pains meds crazy kid

  • i have to get this surgery this summer :/

  • @tiggerny88 Don't worry. It looks bad, but if you follow your doctors orders and take care of yourself in the days and weeks after, it won't be so bad at all. It's actually a fun story to tell and an interesting experience in retrospect. I took a lot of pictures to gross out my friends on facebook while I was recovering, but I wasn't in any pain.

  • @vindogrks1 thanks! i hope it helps with my shyness too

  • @vindogrks1 i did the same :) best thing ive ever done!

  • Who the hell did this surgery jerking your jaw around like that? Isn't there a more gentle way to do this?

  • Jesucristo... yo me hago esto el miercoles!!!
