I think Briony had a pathetic destructive personality....she was prabably nuts. It's sad.In the book she imediately comes across as lifeless and desperate for anything.
I love this movie so much! i saw it resently and I was surprised and sad at the ending. Whoever directed this movie did an amazing job along with everyone else!
No, I firmly believe that Robbie and Ce got a happy ending. Briony is the stupid, selfish girl who hated her sister being happy. She wanted to hurt her sister and that's why she sent Robbie to jail(knowing the consequences.)
She's not a good liar. She can't lie about something that never happened.
Thus, since she isn't intelligent, she can't make up a happy ending. It must've happened.
Why should Briony care about her sister? She hated Ce, so why wouldn't she write her death?
but poor girl, she was young and naive and lets not forget that she did have a crush on Robbie was well. she just didnt think. everything happened to sudden. i dont think she had a devish plan all along and wanted to ruin her sister happiness.
Poor Briony? She lied when she had no right or reason to and ruined Robbie's and Ce's life. How can you say that wasn't a devilish plan? She knew Robbie and Ce were in love and she didn't like it. So she ruined it. If she couldn't have Robbie, no one could. I think Briony should've died for her lies. If she wasn't evil, she wouldn't have lied when she had no reason to. It's a good thing Ce and Robbie got away from her.
If you watch the movie more carefully, you would see that because as a young child her mind is still very innocent. One, she had a huge crush on Robbie which she admitted to her friend later in the hospital and two her cousin harassment situation and the note she found all messes with her mind.
If she had a crush on Robbie, why'd she send him to jail when she had no right? She knew he did nothing wrong but she framed him. Briony was never innocent. If she knowingly sent an innocent man to jail and ruined her sister's life, that's not very innocent. She knew what she was doing.
Did you read the novel? One of the themes of Atonement is being unable to distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality. It runs throughout the course of the novel. She let her imagination get out of hand and really thought Robbie raped her cousin. When she was older she realized she was wrong and tried to make up for it.
No, she knew Robbie didn't do it. She never thought she was wrong and didn't try to make up for it. How can she think Robbie did it when she knew he didn't? Briony is one of the worst villains.
Briony thought Robbie did it till she grew older and realized it was her imagination. Then she became a nurse and spent fifty seven years working on different manuscripts in order to atone. You obviously didn't read the novel. In the movie, it's more difficult to see Briony's situation because you don't have her thoughts like you would in the novel.
How can she say that Robbie did it and almost ruin his life? Why did she have to condemn him when she had no right to say anything? It's hard to believe that a 13 year old could accuse someone of a crime they didn't commit and blame it all on imaginiation. If she wanted to atone, writing a book is not the way to do it. That's being cheap. If she wanted to atone she would've let Ce and Robbie kick her evil butt.
Briony was highly imaginative--more so than ordinary thirteen-year-olds. That's why she was a writer. Briony did not have very much of an opportunity to let Robbie "kick her evil butt" because he was in prison and then went off to war. Both Robbie and Cee were killed. Briony had to spend the rest of her life in guilt. She knew that she could never be forgiven. That was the point. That was the lasting damage. Briony at least tried to make up for it. Paul Marshall did not and neither did Lola.
I've been a writer since I was about 11 and you don't see me falsely accusing people. Ce could've beaten the crap out of her, if not Robbie. Briony did nothing except act like she was the victim with her whining. She did nothing and the only reason she went to Ce was because she was forced to. How do we know Ce and Robbie were killed? It's written from Briony's POV, so she is most likely lying. And if Robbie and Ce died, why would people watch this movie or read the book?
First of all, Briony did not really go and see Cee in reality. She did only in fantasy. She wrote that meeting in order to give Robbie and Cee a happy ending and give herself a terrible one. She was not forced to. Briony did no whining, either. She felt guilty for the rest of her life. Why would people watch this movie or read the book? To understand the theme of atonement. If Robbie and Cee lived then the novel would loose much of its impact. As a writer yourself, you should know that.
Briony has no compassion or else she wouldn't have accused Robbie in the first place. All Briony does is mope and whine rather than doing something about it. Briony writing about Robbie and Ce's happy ending doesn't count as atonement. If the story is called Atonement, then Briony would've gone to Ce and Robbie in reality. That makes more sense to me. I can't be convinced Robbie and Ce never met again. Briony lies all the time.
It doesn't matter what makes sense to you or not--the fact is Robbie and Cee died and Briony lived in guilt. Robbie and Cee never met again once Robbie was in France. It's very depressing, yes, but that's the point. You're missing the beauty of the novel and, if you want to be a writer, you'll need to learn about themes and plot and characterization. You seem to not understand them. Atonement has an Atheist worldview. It's extremely depressing. Why don't you write your own story?
I cannot believe what happens in the end because it's all Briony and she's deceiving. What beauty is there in a sad story? If I want a depressing story, I'll read Poe. I'm saying people don't want a sad ending, so Robbie and Ce should have a happy ending instead of a fake one. I am an English expert. I have to be. I happen to be working on one story now.
There can be beauty in sadness. They had a real ending, it's just not one you appreciated. English expert? Are you in college? I'm studying English and American Literature.
I don't see beauty in depressing stories. As I said, if I want to be depressed I'll read any work by Poe. I believe in making my readers happy by giving them an uplifting ending. That's why I refuse to believe Robbie and Ce's ending described by Briony is real. Maybe I exaggerated when I said expert. In other words, I'm strong with English because I have to be. I'm a senior in high school as of September.
You know, I think that in order for Briony to really atone, she had to be forgiven. How can this book be called atonement if she never is forgiven for her selfish and destructive acts? I think it would be just perfect if Robbie and Ce lived. There's nothing good about a sad story. Therefore, I don't believe that the two lovers died because of some bratty, cowardly, cow.
Hi again. Have you read the book yet? Do you know what atonement is? Ian McEwan, the author of the novel, is an atheist. The novel has an atheist worldview. Atone= "at one" Atonement is also important in christianity. Read the last two pages of the novel. It tells you what McEwan believes--that atonement is the ATTEMPT at reconcilation. Briony knew she would never be forgiven because she's atheist. It was the ATTEMPT that mattered.
Yes, the novel is. Because, according to the book, there is no God, Briony can't be forgiven by a higher power. There is nothing greater than herself to forgive her, so she has to seek forgiveness herself. In otherwords, she has to atone.
She never attempted anything. All she did was whine about how unfair her life was like she was the victim. I don't care to read the book. It's not a good story.
She didn't attempt anything till she turned 18. She never whined. Give me one instance where she whines. If you're going to make claims, back them up. She gave Robbie and Cee a happy ending in her story (when they go to the beach) and made it so they never forgave her. You don't have to read the novel. I think it's a great story and its been highly acclaimed. But do what you want. You can have any opinion you want, but you are throwing out false info.
Yes, that makes her as much a villain as I say she is. She had no right to turn against Robbie especially when she knew the truth. The fact that she did nothing for him and let him&Ce suffer for 4 years shows she's a viper. She never gave them a happy ending, she said they died. Robbie and Ce already had one. They got away from her, married, and lived in that cottage.
@xxlaurauraxx You're right - and she knew what she did was wrong becasue in her books she wrote that Cecilia hadn't forgiven bbecause she knew what she'd done was wrong.
actually maybie if you had understood the movie ud know that the "happy ending" they got wasnt real, its was made up by briony in her book, thats the whole fukn point lol, thats y its called atonement. wasnt a happy ending at all they both died.
I don't care what anyone says. Ce and Robbie did get a happy ending. They married and went to that beach like Ce showed Robbie on that postcard. Sad endings have no beauty in them whatsoever. Happy endings are the best. So Ce and Robbie got a happy ending. They deserve it and Briony can just take a hike and quit acting like she's the victim. It's about time they got their happiness.
ok so i haven't seen this movie but somehow now i want to see... ok maybe not now but like someday :D sooo could you lend me this one? :D and yeah it's awesome and the music is so emotional and... well you get the point :D
