Hi my Grandmother was a weaver and rug maker in Rutherglen you wouldn't happen to know the name of place or have a picture you could send me of the factory would you? They made rugs for the royal family apparently but I can't remember what it was called. Thanks very much enjoyed watching.
I was born in Blackfaulds Rd and there was a lane lined with bramble bushes that led up to the "Auld Pit" - where they set up ack-ack guns and Nissan huts during WWII. I lived on Burnhill St - remember Sophie Baine's? We moved to Greenbank St. Two old gals called Dusty and Stourie live there and used to scrub and chalk tenement stairs. I saw "Wee" Geordie Mann open the "new" playground near the railroad - the watchman was called "Wee" Hammie. Anyone remember?

2.18; Gallowflat House home of Francis Robertson Reid ( my gt gt grandfather). I still have a number of paintings etc from the house. The house was pulled down in 1901 because the heir, John R R had died & the next generation consisted of 3 young girls. There were a series of portraits by Raeburn which went in the sale. Thanks for posting!
thanks for the history lesson, ive been waiting a long time for somebody to do this sort of thing. Rutherglen will always be different, and remain important,. does anybody know the history concerning , rutherglen taking taxes from glasgow? is this true.
@kennytrip, Rutherglen was allowed to impose taxes on quite a wide area (this right was granted by King William). It covered an area between the river Nethan, which empties into the Clyde at Crossford, and the Polmadie burn, and between the Kelvin and the Garrion burn out at Carluke. It wasn't till 1226 that a charter granted by King William, allowing Glasgow to hold a weekly market, prevented Rutherglen magistrates from collecting dues inside Glasgow, but at Shettleston Cross instead.
@janglaschu N THANK YOU I HAVE A GREAT KNOWLAGE OF HISTORY BUT WASNT SURE ABOUT THAT .. THANKS THATS CLEARED THINGS UP ./.I WAS BORN AND BREAD IN ON MILL STREET .AND I HAVE A REALY DEEP LOVEING FOR MY HOMETOWN ...SUCH GREAT HISTORY I LOVE IT .
half newsagent half sweet shop with odd and ends thrown in? Was there for years and years. Latterly Johnny lived in a red sandstone house in Hamilton Road at the corner of the wee lane up to Dunard Road?
Rutherglen Castle was located where Castle Street meets King Street in Rutherglen. It was a large and important castle having been built in the 13th century, the walls were reportedly 5 feet thick. The castle fell under the control of the English during the First War of Scottish Independence and was later besieged several times by Robert The Bruce. It was eventually retaken by his brother Edward Bruce, but was spared destruction unlike so many of the other castles recaptured from the English.
Thanks for putting this together. My granny Nelson had a wet fish shop in Gallowflat Road/Street? in the 1920-30s. There's an old photo of her in big skirts, with willow hen baskets outside. I remember staying there in the 50s, sleeping in the little hole-in-the-wall bed.
Does anyone know anything about the Street where I live in Rutherglen (Hillfoot Avenue) ? I live in the terrace and would like to know when they were built.
Incidentally, I think it's apt that the music is a bit sad - So many beautiful old buildings have been lost in Rutherglen that could have been preserved.
I grew up on Rutherglen Street in El Paso, Texas in a subdivision called Scotsdale... I was in Scotland last December, and tried my best to make a side trip to Rutherglen, Scotland while in Edinburgh, but maybe next time.
Nice pictures by the way... (music is sad though.)
Hope you don't mind, but @Wendell_Howe on Twitter "tweeted" this for his trip to Rutherglen in 1888. He really loved the tune, too.

The church on the main street is actulay an old druids grave yard, thats why it is so high up of the ground with trees. have a look.
shammon1 1 year ago
@shammon1, Probably the height is due to its continued use over the centuries; no actual evidence of any 'druid' connection.

Good photos but music is bloody awful. Also, credit titles are more distracting than informative
