i love how James May brings a mature and even emotional feel to the show, but still remains playful.
even so, i'd still like to see Clarkson and Hammond goofing off. trying to attach a V8 engine or jet turban to the little train to make it go faster. XD
I wonder if the batteries weren't stolen, if the train would have made it... because the train would have been going faster and made more distance... And I thought the train would just refuse to die, a lot like what happens to the used cars on top gear, especially like oliver, the opal, but I was wrong... :(
i used to be obsessed with trains and thomas the tank engine when i was young, most of the time people when they reach my age of 18 look back and bury their heads in their hands with embarressment when they think back to their childhood obsessions. Me? i smile twice as much, my model train set is now sadly boxed up, but will never be taken from me :) Train sets RULE!
A lot of people say that trains are no good and that they harm the enviroment, and when they heard about this they said that anyone who would want to do that is a boring old s**t. But they arent just models, they are the best children's toys ever and i would do that every day because i think trains are the best
It's great to see a toy train make such an achievement. Damaged and lost power it still made the journey passed 70% of it. This is amazing, great team working on cleaning the train, making it work again, this all in just one day. You can't expect everything to go well in just one shot, but they made it quite far. It reminds me of Top Gear journeys somehow where they form a real team that actually cheer for each other. Good job May.
@GeeksvilleStudios Okay, we get your point. You've put it on the last two parts he's used the wrong name/what he should've used instead. I'm really into trains too and yes it is a bit annoying, but frankly I don't think the average viewer really cares that much.
I work in buffers model railways (the shop he goes into during this program) and also the company that helped out with the track laying process, and next month were doing this again, but hornby are getting their employees to put all the track together now :)
I work in buffers model railways (the shop he goes into during this episode) and also the company that helped out with the track laying process, and next month were doing this again, but hornby are getting their employees to put all the track together now :)
They should of went for one of those mini ride-on trains (g scale?) and make it really long and try to carry as many people as possible, probably would need a few trains though.
With 00 gauge they should of used live steam so their wouldnt be any power issues.
IMHO, I think they would have been better served by using track with an integrated roadbed (such as Kato Unitrack) to reduce the gunk that came up from laying on the path and got into the mechanism. As for the power, the resistance in model track is very high. Model railroaders use larger gauge wire to carry the power with short smaller gauge feeder wires to the track at points around the layout. I think that would work here as well reducing the number of batteries required.
@steamfandan the reason they didn't make it apparently was because vandals placed coins on the tracks to short the circuits. they also stole parts from the tracks and batteries.
i have a model of the Flying Scotsman, i doubt it would have done the 10 miles, but i bet it would have given a damn good show, thinking about it, if i gave it my nippy little Tank Engine (i have no idea what class it is all i know is that cracked up to full power, it goes like the Clappers) as a back engine, it would go even further
thank you James May for reminding Britain of the greatness of Model Railway.
Or just use Märklin's set. Märklin's trainsets had these small spokes sticking out in the middle giving power to the train and the train has this springy copperplate at the bottom of it.
So the trains wouldn't have to stop for cleaning and likely wouldn't burn out as much, they were also really heavy for their size since they used to be completly made out of metal with no plastic bits.
But then again the show is about toys in Britain and Märklin is German.
That means that if england finally put the war behind them and accepted germany as something other than an enemy, the journey could've been completed.
Why would someone steal or cut the battery's? That's so low. Especially cos there were lots of kids and stuff who stayed up beyond midnight in the cold just to see one of the trains get there
they made actual live steam model trains wich i think would have made it! although would need to be refilled with water quite alot of times but hey no electricity to worry about!
@MrArneef02 Unfortunately no, no train made it farther than to Instow - but I really have to say, those people who helped make this possible are really awesome... Actually I wonder if anything like that would actually be possible in Germany. We have the Wunderland here in Hamburg of course, but this isn't a public project like what they put up there... I am absolutely impressed!
for that bullet train to do seven miles endless with little maintenance is impressive. My class 220 bachmann wears out and becomes clogged after a week of little running. Very good hornby. Bloody good challenge as well
Although i suppose this idea isnt true to the nature of this thing, wouldn't there have been more chance of WIN with unpowered tracks and a battery powered, waterproof self-contained train? instead of all the battery powered track pieces?
Oh well. Maybe someone will complete something like this in the future. Successfully.
I have a PCM HO engine with well over 250 hours on it. Track main is 97 feet, around 5 times a hour = 121250 real feet or 23 miles. But then again, I don't run it out side.
I have a garden railway in OO gauge and clean wheels is paramount although mine isn't of the length of Barnstaple to Bideford. I find that Hornby wheels seem to get far dirtier than Bachmann ones and the Bachmann Warship could have handled 12 coaches with ease as it weighs over half a kilo. A battery every 50m and more security would have been better.
@ random0815: when I was a child playing with trains Hornby made a special OO truck that cleaned the track by being run along it (saved hours of scrubbing the with an eraser).
I've got a Märklin 3000, that I once ran for 24 hours a weekend. Just for fun. It's now about 27 years old and I just convertet it to Digital 2 years ago. It is still running. Only new coal sticks and sewing machine oil. No parts replaced.
they should have had a mallard or big boy model, i think the main problem is dirt and material wear, big wheeled older models (like the scotsman) should do better than something like the bullet train (with the same power), better wheel material and self-cleaning mechanisms, they should have had broom crews cleaning up the track right infront or a wagonless lead-train with a brush attached
Thanks for posting. It was a little upset that the train cannot make it. I wonder if it will make a difference if the train is batteries operated rather than relying the power from the rails.
@trips4leo Very likely. James briefly mentioned "voltage drop" in the first episode. This affects DC voltages (the kind that comes from batteries) quite severely the further the distance from the battery.
So at the start it may read 12 v, but 50m away it may only read 5 v. The mobile battery idea at 2:42 will help against voltage drop, but ultimately the trains just weren't up to it sadly. It's a shame.

@gentarion True, but the trains would have died anyway. IMHO, I think they may have died sooner due to the higher speed. But it woud have been really cool if they made it.
