  • @natel68

This seems very anecdotal. You're being a bit too sentimental and dramatic. It's a wonderful song. That's just about it.

  • Something about The Decemberists just thrusts me into the inconspicuous Mom & Pop shops scattered along quiet Portland streets... The simple, humble independence and youth of that city is what Colin does so well to emulate. Love this song. Love this band.

  • This is hands down one of the prettiest songs ever written

  • Being 56 years old and having been a concert rat throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s I can only say this. Magic like this comes from the heart and sheds the shackles of the record company, Shakira crap. Embrace it, buy it and love it. It only comes around so often.

  • I'm a very stoic person but I'm pretty sure if they come to Australia and they play this song, I'll burst inot tears at how lovely this song is.

  • I want to dance to this at my wedding.

  • It absolutely blows my mind that beautiful music like this is still being made in 2011, and yet radio & music TV stations still choose to promote shallow, manufactured crap! I'm sure if this song had've been released in 1970, it would be all over the radio...

  • Colin played this song as his second encore last night. It was the most beautiful way to end a night, brought me to tears. I love you Decemberists

  • Their every album is better than previous ;)

  • quick! nobody mention anything about the 1 dislike! You'll jinx it and I hear there are people that get sad over such things

  • this song is amazing. wonderful. Thanks, Decemberists.

  • I love this song and the harmonies but why is the female voice (Jenny I presume) singing out of key? It's worse during the choruses, the middle section (the part before the harmonica solo) is okay. Weird...

  • @harrybelly It's more of a contrasted harmony that I am sure they planned on when recording ;) But hey, we all have our own tastes...I think after more listens you will enjoy and not notice so much, my friend.

  • @guitarwarrior69 Thanks for your reply. My first thought was that they made it deliberately for a more "retro" approach, but that seemed so out of character for them, as a band......to be "gimmicky". Plus, they usually have rock solid backing vocals. I am, however, slowly getting less bothered by this :)

And this album, as a whole, is growing on me.

  • @harrybelly You have the ear of a goat sir. I haven't heard harmonies like this since the reunion of CSNY in Memphis, many many years ago. Maybe the issue is you? They seem to be doing quite fine.

  • @whalestail1955 Actually my ears are considered very good. But of course they make mistakes. I love this song though, this was not meant as a putdown of the band.

  • @oldstylebud816 But they caight it early! so she should be ok. I went to see them in raleigh NC and they talked about it briefly.

  • BREAKING UP? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I will break down and cry....

  • okay, so i get chills ever time they harmonize that word "ride."

    IT'S JUST TOO GOOD.

  • My birthday's in June!

  • Sad to hear they are splitting up after this tour.

  • @kenbot1964 what?? i thought they were just taking it easy while Jenny is recovering

  • @kenbot1964 source for this?

  • Comment removed

  • @kenbot1964 sucks if they are...at least their going out on top....their latest cd is better than band of horses, kings of leon, iron and wine, and the black keys latest album

  • @SuperJeremy25 not hard to outclass the king of leon. what a shit band they are.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant I sure hope you're not saying kings of leon are shit. To do so would be to profess complete musical misunderstanding and ignorance. That band is incredible. Perhaps you just don't know what to listen for.

  • @riseagan No they really are that bad... and I listen to and enjoy a plethora of music. It just goes to show that you can make millions in the music industry as long as you write songs geared towards the current MTV generation - regardless of your talent level. Seriously - what teenager isn't interested in sex AND fire?! Too easy.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant Well theres your problem. the songs that are played on the radio are by far their worst songs. You have to look much deeper into their catalogue to find their musicianship. If you claim to love music the way it seems... you will give it a shot. Check out "cold desert live at O2 theatre" or any of their early albums. And kings of leon do not gear their music towards mtv generation as they remain to be the only band to refuse to let "glee" use their songs.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant And i'm sure that because they are "shit" and "write songs geared towards the MTV generation" is exactly why Paul McCartney, one of the most influential songwriters of all time, attends their concerts. Or do you know more about song writing than he does?

  • @riseagan Paul McCartney is also on his third marriage, that doesn't say much about his taste in music but does prove he is capable of having bad taste.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant Did you look up the song? or did you just decide to write in that irrelevant remark about McCartney? I believe that if you actually took the time to actually listen to KOL, you couldn't possibly say that they are shit. This coming from a person who thoroughly and completely hates the crap that is considered most popular (katy perry, that sexy and i know it guy etc...). I consider myself to be a critic of music as does it seem you do, so i'm telling you... give them a shot.

  • @riseagan compromise for god sakes!

  • @vhalenhound my apologies. I did not intend to sound like a jerk. It was more intended to just be a debate.

  • @riseagan No one is a jerk haha. I argue about this kind of shit all the time with my friends, except they are much less informed then you guys. I feel like there's much more material on both sides for your argument than an argument whether the beatles suck or not. Of course I love the beatles, but my friends are musical noobs. But yeah. It's cool bro

  • I can picture Gordon Lightfoot singing this song

  • I give my best to Springville Hill.

  • I swoon to the sweet melodies that come from Meloy's vocal chords

  • The intro to this song really reminds me of bob dylan, probably the harmonica that does it.

  • where's the love button. like just isn't enough.

  • @ninjababyjesus There's a favourite button

  • Simple song, great sound. Love the harmony. Woman's voice is a good contrast with the lead singer. This might be my favorite from the new album.

  • Double like!

  • I don't think I will ever get tired of this song. It is truly a masterpiece.

  • My god. I love this band with each and every note Meloy writes.

  • This is a good one
