i found this vid very helppful and gave me alot of insight, i love trucks, basically been on one, dad had an 8v92 gm in a white road commander runnin Hay to Boort, now im 18 and will be going for my liscence soon so i been a bit nervouse about the gears, so thanks mate
Interesting. With an even 25% ratio step from 1st lo to 8th hi, or a 200rpm gap, which can easily and safely be snapped up with even massive weights on just by switching the Horton to manual, Im yet to find ANY situation on the entire Eastern Seaboard and west to BrokenHill that would require risking severe damage to a $25000 transmission? as fieldsvc manager for 10 of the 13 years I was at G&RKenworth in Syd and 12 Eaton schools I can confidently say this gear should NEVER be used.
Honestly dude.... or Dud........ I am going to carry on like a wank, but seriously...... Im currently piloting a 155tonne rated K108 on heavy haulage based in Sydney. I sometimes run up Mt Ousley twicein that day with up to 121tonne on permit with a 2x8 & 5x8 MTE dolly & float not to mention the heavy push/pull work we do with 2x8 & 8x8 Drake dolly & platform which takes us up to 183.5tonne gross.. NEVER HAVE I HEARD OF ANYTHING MORE F'ING REDICULOUS THAN THIS VIDEO!!!!! you are a Humetard!!!
@AUSSIEGIZMO76 I also do heavy haul work ( well up to 140ton only) and the answer is NO I don't and never will use this gear while carting anthing more than a B-Double. Glad you have you opinion and have expressed it, as that's what youtube should be used for. Thankfully I am a fully qualified driver trainer now and also have many driving awards so I feel as though you may have taken this video to seriously. It's just to show you CAN use it if need be. @EJholden Yes i'm glad you wrote this. I don't know why so many people have a go at this video saying i'm an idiot and would get sacked if I drove for them bla, bla, bla. The fact is I only made the video to show people that this is possible and not to use it as common practice. The truth is I was shown this when I was about 19 years of age by my best mate, who also happened to turn out in the end to be my boss. He taught me in his trucks and encourages me to use this gear whenever possible
I'm just a kid, so I know next to nothing about trucks, but do you need the clutch every time you change with a roadranger? Or can you shift without it?
No matter how many horsies your donk has with any amount of trailers on. not really recomended starting in this gear, i have to agree it does work but wouldnt like it done to my trucks. anyone ever driven a 18 speed with reversed cogs in the box ? makes trucks go realllllllly fast

I,ve been running triples to Darwin for 18yrs and if i ever started of in any gear other than 1st, drove along with my hand resting on the gearshift, or preselected like this bloke does,my old man/boss would deduct a clutch/transmission out of my wages.
If you continue to use the low hole in hi range on any transmission, especially with a load on, you will some day see parts of your transmission in your mirrors. The low hole is not meant to be used in hi range period. Dumb dumb dumb..
@turbancp WEll I'm also a heavy mechanical fitter and have worked on and rebuilt many Roadrangers over the years. if you ask any of the mechanics that work at roadranger they'll tell you it has nothing to do with the gearbox but the driver. Because the teeth on the dog ring are not rounded off like other gears if you dont engage them at exactly the right revs they can grab and send shock through the box and that's what stuffs them. My mates truck has 26 yrs of use like this and is still fine
@alwaysoffroad Here in the US, we call it the mystery gear, works great for turns, jst enough gear, hard to miss, just gotta be guick to catch fifth, just dont rev it all the wway out, i liked your vid...fuck the rest.
@turbancp On a 10 speed the low hole in high range is 5th gear and on a 15 speed it is 5th and 5th overdrive. You should never use the low hole in high range when driving a 9, 13, or 18 speed You very seldom use the low hole in low range it is about as useless as high range reverse
There's something I haven't understand yet. You say the extra gear is half way between 4th and 5th low but when you maked the demonstration you used it between 3rd and 4th low.
@svg1995 I would bet the truck is empty or bobtailing so he could probably go from 3rd to that invisible gear or into 2nd in hi range which could be considered 6th. Nevertheless what he's doing is totally rookie dumb ass shit. Die transmission killer!

@abeeke85 thats really funny because how the hell do you down shift then...every trucker i know drops the lever before bringing out of gear...and since none of them have tore out a tranny i am going to guess it is no problem to the trans.
Just got my license for a heavy combination watched a movie on how the 18 speed works strongly NOT recommended to use that gear in high range, they said something about it's a creeper gear it's not strong enough to be used in high range!!!
ur talking about splitting gears right? we got that on swedish trucks as well it´s a pure life saver in the quarrys with the steep roads we only got five speed with high/low and split ur truck is like a nine speed or something? am i right
@Merc963 I've never flown a plane, but I understand the controls, and I've been the passenger in a rig, but I agree with you, flying seems a bit easier. Plus, you don't have 10,000 other idiots on the road cutting you off.
@ReisendeEuropa Statistically speaking, flying a small airplane and riding a motorcycle are about equally dangerous. However, when I'm flying my airplane I don't have to worry about somebody running a red light and making me their new hood ornament. I prefer to leave my life in my hands--not someone who already has their hands full with their cell phone and their Big Mac.
@jbell316 Hey It's called Australia. We drive on the other side of the road compared to most other country's. So this is The correct side of the cab :)
@amusichound the extra gear is only low low meant for taking off up steep hills at heavy weights it is triple counter shaft gear box but that gear is way too small to be used in the top box(higher ratio countershaft engaged) IF anything goes wrong will totally shatter gear box and warrany will be void
no Professional driver would use that gear position other than take off
in my old mans truck he has a 18 speed eaton fuller and 1st gear is next to reverse like a 4 speed there are only 4 gears in his lowbox but every gear box is different
@psycopyro001 - But I'm just so used to driving on the right side because I grew up and live in America. It'd be a challenge, but fun at the same time and I'm definitely willing to give it a try!
@coyner254 I thought it was hilarious when my mom moved back from australia she kept turning into the left lane. good thing it's a small enough town that our streets are not very busy.
when i was little, my dad would let me and my brother play in the cab of his truck. pretend to drive. somehow, we managed to engage the clutch and take off down the road. we stopped when he hit the tree........ luckily, it was a little tree, and neither us nor the truck was hurt.
when changing gear does the clutch have to be pressed twice or sometimes not at all ive heard of someone telling me that but im not sure as i drive a scania and its fully synchromesh. Thanks?
621k miles sounds about right. He was probably really good at it so the clutches lasted a bit longer. If driven correctly, they will last the life of the truck which in the states is about 1,000,000miles or 1,609,344km.
@Dragon150043 I've heard this before, but 20 years of not using the clutch and using the cheater gear multiple times a day I have yet to do a clutch or a tranny and I have run dedicated trucks.
@Dragon150043 uh no wrong, not using a clutch may burn up clutches but saves pressure plates. Do the math on the remove and replace on that one. Nobody under 50 uses a clutch and if they do they're probably a horrible driver.
@BERLINGO4255 If you're good then you don't use clutch after 1 gear, but it's only in the old old transmissions that you may have to double clutch because they didn't have synchros
All HD transmissions like the one in the video do not have syncromesh. You must have a lighter duty transmission? On a roadranger like the one in the video you should always double clutch. Power needs to be broken and shift into neutral, then Let out the clutch and allow the transmission to match engine speed, then clutch again while entering your gear. It will safe the life of your transmission!
@Dragon150043 Thats what I alway thought too......until I drove my first Semitrailer in 20 years and found that the improvements included driving like a normal car and not having to 'double shuffle" the clutch.
@steveleadbeater Now of course im speaking of manufacturer recommended procedure, partially because I just took a RoadRanger/Eaton class which taught me all the specs. Technology has definitely come very far, but there still arent any syncros in the HD transmissions, apart from the auxilliary. So shifting may feel way better then it used, but its still good practice to Double if its an Owner operator situation. If its fleet, to each their own!! lol
Transmission trivia: Going up, the top three ratios in the Eaton Fuller low inertia 13 & 18 speed double overdrive transmissions are direct (1 to 1 ratio) .85 & .74. The middle (.85) ratio comes from running the .74 top overdrive gear thru an underdrive ratio. So, nearly every gear in the transmission spins in 17th (18 speed) or 12th(13 speed), a good gear to avoid if after fuel mileage. And, direct (respectivly 16th & 11th) has no parasitic HP losses because only the thru shaft spins.
@whiteman81 - I stand corrected... I have been confusing them for a while now -the .74 ratio is the "other". Most Paccar trucks on US highway will have Eaton/Fullers so called low inertia 13/18 speed double overdrive transmissions... or, their "FRO"10 speed with a single .74 overdrive.
There are two ghost gears,I used em.Use the other one to much and you'll rip the shaft. It uses the air-ride and drops. On my truck the oil pump is above my shat.So you mess em both up O:
The oil pump is driven off the PTO gear on the upper counter shaft, it only stops pumping when the vehicle is at a stand still and the clutch pedal is depressed. However using low gear in hi range does cause damage as low gear drives directly onto the counter shafts which does not have the same hardening properties as the gears pressed onto the shafts. Which results in rapid wear. I have stripped plenty of 18 speeds and replaced counter shafts because of this. Another "truckie" with no idea!!
when you have 18 speeds, does that mean you have 6 gears in the gearbox with 3 auxiliaries, deep, low, high? or do u have 5 gears with 4 auxiliaries and 2 useless ratios?
hi! :) i want to be a trucker but i have a quastion can u helpe me?
whey truckers change a gear withe out a cloch and how did they do that ? they most havet in like 15000 RPM? or they can chenge when they want ? can some 1 helpe me
...and you can damage the trans if you attempt to use it in pattern (ie: 4>ghost>5L..doesn't work). I mainly use it for low speed corner exits, to avoid having to drop the range. There are really just 5 forward gears, it's just the range and splitter that give you twice (+ splitter) the gearing. This goes for 8LL,9,10,13,15,18-most heavy duty transmissions, really. It's a lot safer than drivers are lead to believe, but you have to know that it is *not* an in-between gear. Chicago, IL...
Glad I stumbled across this. I've been using the ghost gear for years, and have taught many others how to do it, as well. I know Eaton claims it will grenade the trans, blah blah blah, but the reality (and this was an off the record comment from an Eaton instructor @ a clinic) is they say you cannot use it because they don't want to invite the liability, being that gear is slightly shorter than 4th gear. Most who have driven a straight 10 are used to it, but it's out of pattern on the 13...
Roadranger will not honor a warranty on your gearbox if you were found to use "Mystery Gear"....anyways when would you need to use that gear in Aussie, I drive a logger in NZ on some pretty tuff terrain and most of the time I never have to use overdrive in the low range so the use of mystery would be pointless.
cool video but his gears are wrong the firet gear he his refering to is called a creeper gear and is not labeled on the Roadranger as first, first is straight up to left. On the Roadranger there are eight gears with a direct and overdrive option on each and with creeper this gives the 18speed label. If you were to count 4 reverse gears (or two with direct and overdrive) it would be a 22speed.

Why is it the experts always seem to be drivers of someone else's trucks, if you were a mechanic or an owner driver I would tend to give you more credit. I'm glad it's not one of my trucks you experiment with.
With using extra gear, you actually do the overdrive position by pushing the splitter forward slowly. that splits 4 extra gears. Ex.] 5th-6th-7th and 8th.
I'm in something that would be translated to "vehicle school" or "vehicle college" so instead of normal college, i drive trucks and cars all day long, its freaking awesome!
alot of people shift way more than they need to for example. 2nd split down then split up then switch into high range than up to 3rd then split down then split up pop it into 4th then repeat lol
how ur sopposed to do it his go through all of the gears in low withought spliting then all of them in high then split the last 2 or 3 gears in high range
yea but depends on how heavy you are and if your climbing a hill..i sometimes split from 3rd gear onwards even empty to get me up to speed but i rarely do that only with bout 5 or more tonnes on.
He is making alot of unnecessary gear changes, he goes from 2nd- 3rd -4th..then splits it then back to 2nd, all in low range, unless he flicked it to high range where 2nd would have been 6th i dont see why he did that...besides why does he need to disengage every gear to split it?..he could just clutch in and split...or flip back the switch then clutch in to unsplit....is there a reason he is doing it the way he is...does anyone know??...
@xxxCHIVONGxxx you only have to use the clutch one when shifting up gears but you always use it while shifting down gears to take the pressure off the gear box
You can do the do the same with an 8 speed do first and second go to high range low gear you skip third and fourth gear mostly empty it can be done but i do it with a short load.
we had a big dispute about that with Eaton & Mt Cotton many years ago, we were running Cairns north to Mosman along the cliff road in doubles & Mt Cotton would reasese our driving every 6 months, anyway a lot of us were useing that gear at the top of hills rather than go back into the bottom box well big dramma & we were stopped doing it. They evan worked out how to make it show up on their GPS & new if we were using it, Eaton would not fix the box's under warranty if we were using that gear tx
its extremely hard on transmissions to run like this. as the low gear isn't designed to hold the torque its transferring in high range. also, this gear is redundant in high range.
This is not true as the oil pump works off the input shaft from the clutch. As long as the input shaft is spinning the oil pump is working. That why you never coast down hill in neutral as at idle the input shaft isn't spiining fast enough to pump oil to the rest of the box which is spinning at highway speeds. that's the fastest way to ruin a box. my friend has a truck used this gear for 1.6million km and never had any trouble box is still fine
@evilxr another one of you silly bastards that thinks you know it all get your god damn facts straight even i knew the oil pump works off the imput shaft your about a sharp as a bowling ball

ur talking about splitting gears right? we got that on swedish trucks as well it´s a pure life saver in the quarrys with the steep roads we only got five speed with high/low and split ur truck is like a nine speed or something? am i right

Merc963 11 months ago
@Merc963 I've never flown a plane, but I understand the controls, and I've been the passenger in a rig, but I agree with you, flying seems a bit easier. Plus, you don't have 10,000 other idiots on the road cutting you off.
ReisendeEuropa 9 months ago
@ReisendeEuropa Statistically speaking, flying a small airplane and riding a motorcycle are about equally dangerous. However, when I'm flying my airplane I don't have to worry about somebody running a red light and making me their new hood ornament. I prefer to leave my life in my hands--not someone who already has their hands full with their cell phone and their Big Mac.

@amusichound the extra gear is only low low meant for taking off up steep hills at heavy weights it is triple counter shaft gear box but that gear is way too small to be used in the top box(higher ratio countershaft engaged) IF anything goes wrong will totally shatter gear box and warrany will be void
no Professional driver would use that gear position other than take off
arkayau 1 year ago
it is a triple counter shaft gear box that gear does not have all 3 shafts for a reason
arkayau 1 year ago
that is the easiest way to shatter ya gear box and you woud not work for anybody I know dring like that

when i was little, my dad would let me and my brother play in the cab of his truck. pretend to drive. somehow, we managed to engage the clutch and take off down the road. we stopped when he hit the tree........ luckily, it was a little tree, and neither us nor the truck was hurt.
tranurse 1 year ago
i also forgot u only use the clutch for 1st gear or stoping
Jerald1989 1 year ago
when changing gear does the clutch have to be pressed twice or sometimes not at all ive heard of someone telling me that but im not sure as i drive a scania and its fully synchromesh. Thanks?
BERLINGO4255 1 year ago
@BERLINGO4255
u can actually shift the gears in a tractor trailor without using the clutch
Jerald1989 1 year ago
WRONG. This hurts the sliding clutches no matter what. Always double clutch.
Dragon150043 1 year ago
@Dragon150043 my dad don't double clutch n he got 1,000,000km out of it
ModzMedia 1 year ago
621k miles sounds about right. He was probably really good at it so the clutches lasted a bit longer. If driven correctly, they will last the life of the truck which in the states is about 1,000,000miles or 1,609,344km.
Dragon150043 1 year ago
@Dragon150043 I've heard this before, but 20 years of not using the clutch and using the cheater gear multiple times a day I have yet to do a clutch or a tranny and I have run dedicated trucks.
ledfoot73 8 months ago
@Dragon150043 uh no wrong, not using a clutch may burn up clutches but saves pressure plates. Do the math on the remove and replace on that one. Nobody under 50 uses a clutch and if they do they're probably a horrible driver.
turbancp 8 months ago
Not true! This will hurt the sliding clutches. You should always double clutch!
Dragon150043 1 year ago
@BERLINGO4255 If you're good then you don't use clutch after 1 gear, but it's only in the old old transmissions that you may have to double clutch because they didn't have synchros
thefarmfred1 1 year ago
@thefarmfred1 yer i knw my dad don't and he teachn me how to only use it once while shifting up gears
ModzMedia 1 year ago
All HD transmissions like the one in the video do not have syncromesh. You must have a lighter duty transmission? On a roadranger like the one in the video you should always double clutch. Power needs to be broken and shift into neutral, then Let out the clutch and allow the transmission to match engine speed, then clutch again while entering your gear. It will safe the life of your transmission!
Dragon150043 1 year ago
@Dragon150043 Thats what I alway thought too......until I drove my first Semitrailer in 20 years and found that the improvements included driving like a normal car and not having to 'double shuffle" the clutch.
steveleadbeater 1 year ago

And, direct (respectivly 16th & 11th) has no parasitic HP losses because only the thru shaft spins.
stayingman 1 year ago
0.73 overdrive. but close enough...
whiteman81 1 year ago
@whiteman81 - I stand corrected... I have been confusing them for a while now -the .74 ratio is the "other". Most Paccar trucks on US highway will have Eaton/Fullers so called low inertia 13/18 speed double overdrive transmissions... or, their "FRO"10 speed with a single .74 overdrive.
stayingman 1 year ago
do u have to use the cluthc like a normal 5spd car?
stupidcrazyshow 1 year ago
There are two ghost gears,I used em.Use the other one to much and you'll rip the shaft. It uses the air-ride and drops. On my truck the oil pump is above my shat.So you mess em both up O:
BIGTRUCKSROCK1 1 year ago
The oil pump is driven off the PTO gear on the upper counter shaft, it only stops pumping when the vehicle is at a stand still and the clutch pedal is depressed. However using low gear in hi range does cause damage as low gear drives directly onto the counter shafts which does not have the same hardening properties as the gears pressed onto the shafts. Which results in rapid wear. I have stripped plenty of 18 speeds and replaced counter shafts because of this. Another "truckie" with no idea!!

shaned8845 1 year ago
...and you can damage the trans if you attempt to use it in pattern (ie: 4>ghost>5L..doesn't work). Chicago, IL...
dnrfleet 1 year ago
Glad I stumbled across this. I've been using the ghost gear for years, and have taught many others how to do it, as well. I know Eaton claims it will grenade the trans, blah blah blah, but the reality (and this was an off the record comment from an Eaton instructor @ a clinic) is they say you cannot use it because they don't want to invite the liability, being that gear is slightly shorter than 4th gear. Most who have driven a straight 10 are used to it, but it's out of pattern on the 13...

Roadranger will not honor a warranty on your gearbox if you were found to use "Mystery Gear"....anyways when would you need to use that gear in Aussie, I drive a logger in NZ on some pretty tuff terrain and most of the time I never have to use overdrive in the low range so the use of mystery would be pointless.
stinknpoo 1 year ago
cool video but his gears are wrong the firet gear he his refering to is called a creeper gear and is not labeled on the Roadranger as first, first is straight up to left.

Ex.] 5th-6th-7th and 8th.

alot of people shift way more than they need to for example. 2nd split down then split up then switch into high range than up to 3rd then split down then split up pop it into 4th then repeat lol
how ur sopposed to do it his go through all of the gears in low withought spliting then all of them in high then split the last 2 or 3 gears in high range
insanerider5 1 year ago
yea but depends on how heavy you are and if your climbing a hill..i sometimes split from 3rd gear onwards even empty to get me up to speed but i rarely do that only with bout 5 or more tonnes on.
daz57L 1 year ago
You have to do the overdrive position to have extra gears in an 18 speed.
4NZZZ454CATEngine 1 year ago
He is making alot of unnecessary gear changes, he goes from 2nd- 3rd -4th..then splits it then back to 2nd, all in low range, unless he flicked it to high range where 2nd would have been 6th i dont see why he did that...besides why does he need to disengage every gear to split it?..he could just clutch in and split...or flip back the switch then clutch in to unsplit....is there a reason he is doing it the way he is...does anyone know??...

we had a big dispute about that with Eaton & Mt Cotton many years ago, we were running Cairns north to Mosman along the cliff road in doubles & Mt Cotton would reasese our driving every 6 months, anyway a lot of us were useing that gear at the top of hills rather than go back into the bottom box well big dramma & we were stopped doing it. They evan worked out how to make it show up on their GPS & new if we were using it, Eaton would not fix the box's under warranty if we were using that gear tx
ElioFrankAnthony 2 years ago
its extremely hard on transmissions to run like this. as the low gear isn't designed to hold the torque its transferring in high range. also, this gear is redundant in high range.

what they don't tell you about the ghost gear is the oil pump in the gearbox stops working when you use it, if used too often gearbox goes bang
evilxr 2 years ago
This is not true as the oil pump works off the input shaft from the clutch. As long as the input shaft is spinning the oil pump is working. That why you never coast down hill in neutral as at idle the input shaft isn't spiining fast enough to pump oil to the rest of the box which is spinning at highway speeds. that's the fastest way to ruin a box. my friend has a truck used this gear for 1.6million km and never had any trouble box is still fine
