  • What a fantastic track.

  • Hearing this over some pop-singer singing the National Anthem on State of Origin with Roy and HG - Good times

  • You made us all proud to be aussie thanks lionel

  • rip Lionel thankyou for this song .. thankyou for just being you xx :) love and strength for your family i wish them all the strength in the world in dealing with his very sad loss xx :)

  • RIP brother ur the true champ!

  • heard this song for the first time last night because my fiance said this is how he feels about me such a great song must listen to the rest :)

  • This song cracks me up because of Roy & HG, like if you know what I'm talking about

  • I still remember playing this song on the juke box back when it was on the charts....Lionel was a great Australian, a fine ambassador for his people, and will be missed and always remembered

  • Lived in Warragul/Drouin wghen he was boxuing.

His voice was like his fighting...FANTASTIC and great.

    RIP you great Australian

  • Thank you Lionel you were a champ

  • Ya taught me a lot my friend always in my heart xx

  • Lionel, Thank you for just being you.

  • A world champion - now and always. The disgraceful Australian government declares a public holiday to celebrate a foreign Queen's birthday when it isn't even her birthday; and yet the great Lionel Rose is regarded as a distant relic. We should have a heroes day each year and take a day off, starting with a Lionel Rose Day. Get rid of the stupid Queens birthday you pompous political sycophants and respect the true champions like Lionel Rose.

  • Let me thank you for just being you, Lionel. RIP

  • I love this song, RIP

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Lionel and Lester Ellis about 20 years ago, both men could not have been more obliging or friendly and I'll never forget them for it.

    RIP Champ.

  • RIP Lionel, a true aussie legend! Thanks also to Johnny Young(the songwriter) for your emotional tribute this morning on 6IX.

  • @flynnyboy100 I heard on radio here in Melbourne that Lionel was a huge fan of the Australian country band The Hawking Brothers. He used to watch them nearly every week at a pub they performed at and they often invited him to join them on stage to do a few songs. They ended up backing Lionel on the recordings he made. the proceeds of which he put back into his family part of which he used to purchase a house for his Mum in Drouin. A truly wonderful Australian.

  • @hirdy6 Yeah Mate, Johnny Young explained it all this morning on 6IX. John was a boxing fan, he met the great Lionel, They went to a Hawking Brothers concert and Lionel said to John, hey brother, write a song for me! The rest is history! Written by Johnny Young with the Hawking Bros band as back up! John actually lost it this morning talking about it, but big boys DO cry, dont they?

  • God Bless ya Lionel!! Sad to see you're leaving..RIP...

  • Rip Lionel.A Champion in and out of the ring.

  • I remember when my dad brought this single home when I was 5-6 years old and it was played and played, it is a great song and brings fond memories of my childhood and of the man who sang it. THANK YOU Lionel...

  • I still have the singles..and they crackle & hiss just like this one.

    Not from age but..............

Listened to it over and over as a kid.

Will always remember this song whenever anyone mentions Lionel Rose.

Us Aussies were gobsmacked by his achievement.and the radio staions could not get enough of his music.

My late father used to sing this song to me as a kid. Wonderful memouries.

Sincere condolences to all his family. Bring on the state funeral!

  • @GeriatricDinosaur, You must be psychic mate. A state funeral is exactly what he deserved and received and what a wonderful celebation of his life it was.

  • Sad to hear of his passing. RIP Lionel... I have always loved this song since I was a child.

Thank YOU Lionel and condolences to his family

  • R.i.P Lional you were a true champion unlike some of there self proclaimed champions these days who only fight hand pick fighters.

  • God Bless You Lionel! RIP!

  • Lionel Rose was a national hero, this how I will always remember this champion,

    Rest Well Champ..

  • RIP Lionel!

  • I watched him fight Harada, I watched him struggle with alcohol and struggle with culture change, I heard his songs, always listened, and when ever i did see this fine young man, I was happy for him and always smiled for his success. Now I am sad that our days are in their wilight and was so sad today that "our Lonel" died so very young. He did give so much Pride to so many Australians. I feel more alone today.

  • i met this wonderful man when i was 9yrs old in Geelong, years ago, he was a hero to all, and my mother loved this song....he was also the first Indigenous Australian i had ever met, his kind face, and he done so so much for people all over...Condolences to the Rose family, this man deserves a State Funeral.

  • A world champion - now and always. The moronic Australian government is a disgrace for declaring a public holiday to celebrate a foreign Queen's birthday when it isn't even her birthday; and yet the great Lionel Rose is regarded as a distant relic. We should have a heroes day each year and take a day off, starting with a Lionel Rose Day.

  • @creativeengineer

    Well said

  • great song by a great boxer. I stll have the original recording as well as the dvd Rose Against the Odds he was an awesome boxer. Did you know that in 1969 not only was he Australian of the year but also sportsman of the year? So deserving

  • white horse hotel Flemington 1967

  • He sang this for me in my kitchen in Cairns, North Queensland. I love him for it and can tell everyone now, also that he is a great guy too.

  • i love this song. what a great champion boxer lionel was.

  • cheers mate for putting this up for my cousin lynal. he'd be very gracious for what you have done.

  • Great song, great singer, he could box a bit too.

  • voting to be the next Australian national anthem.

  • Good stuff. Dust coming off the memories.

  • I loved Lionel when he defeated Fighting Harada, came back a hero, fell on hard times but still standing strong even though his health is suffering. The one unknown question which will stand the test of time is who was the best Lionel or Johnny beautifully they never fought.

The past and present boxers association still has quarterly meetings where Lionel and Johnny attend when they can

re the music i still have a copy of Lionels original LP another great song is " pick me up o your way down"

  • Great song Lionel

  • Best Aussie boxer ever produced...

  • to deadly

  • Great song - lovely catchy number and nice lyrics. (Another piece of Johnny Young's brilliance as a songwriter). We were so proud of Lionel - as our boxing hero (and Aussie of the year, I think). A champion in many ways - was this our first indigenous No. 1??

  • @MrGMmusic Jimmy Little had our first I think.

  • Ah, yes - thanks for that. That would be Royal Telephone, in 1963?? Sorry about that Jimmy!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this.

Lionel is my Uncle, good to see other people remember him for who he is.

I have many of your mob as me mates and I'm proud of it. Thanks once again Mate! Rod

  • To Brian you should listen to Russels best song "the girl that I love " also by Johnny Young or "Smiley " also by JY a song about Normie Rowe while in Vietnam

    John

  • Did Johnny Young ever record the song himelf?

  • I'm not aware of him recording the song although I once read that he sang the lyrics so Lionel could singalong with him for this record.

  • Johnny Young never recorded this song.....it was recorded by Jamie Redfern (who was on Young Talent Time)

  • Is it just me or does he have a nice voice?

  • I've heard much worse.

  • Thanx Dinosaur for posting, brings back many great memories of my childhood, when he was the CHAMP. Katie.

  • Yo Lionel, great song my brother, havnt seen you in a while, its been such a long long long time, Peter Robertson.

  • I had no idea that Johnny Young wrote this. What a contrast with another of his songs from around the same time, the real thing sung by Russell Morris - different ends of the music spectrum. Good memories and thanks for posting.

  • was there a version he did when he says oh yeah at the end

  • Yes, I think that it is the same version as this one but this has just been cut short by a few seconds. Maybe the Poster didn't like the ending?

  • i have the original 45 on vinyl of this and there is no oh yeah at the end I think you could be thinking of Louis Armstrong what a wonderful world. Lionel Rose would have to be one of the best boxers this country has,1968 australian and sportsman of the year

  • UNKIE LIONEL.......wooot sing it :)

  • Thanks for uploading and sharing this.

  • would you have the lyrics of this song--there is nothing on google search--maybe could be in the canberra archives--i say what the heck is it doing there--you should promote this song again here--see what happens!!!

  • Johnny Young currently works for radio 6IX in Perth. You maybe able to contact him there regarding the lyrics.

  • thanks for posting this --he certainly is the forgotten champ-this is a great song-i'm sure there is a B/W vid of him singing this--but there is hardly any info about him now-and where is that video of him-thanks to you and the scratchy 45 --we can enjoy this classic--he has a great voice--i thank you for putting this on--lionel was a champ always a champ--

  • Hi Simonteam.

Thanks for your comments.Glad you enjoyed the music.

  • I love hearing this song over the national anthem every State of Origin with Roy and H.G.

    Great tune!

  • Hey Geriatric there's a few of us out here.

This was a long lost memory of mine of a simple song loved by my mum.

B side I think was Pick me up on Your Way Down. Would love to hear this.

Not a bad boxer in his day either.

  • Watch this space.

  • I was bying hot jam donuts when he won his title

  • Hi Jack19602.

    I've uploaded "Pick me up...."

Are you after any other Aussie songs?

If I have them I'll upload them as well.

    Keep rocking.
