rip Lionel thankyou for this song .. thankyou for just being you xx :) love and strength for your family i wish them all the strength in the world in dealing with his very sad loss xx :)
I still remember playing this song on the juke box back when it was on the charts....Lionel was a great Australian, a fine ambassador for his people, and will be missed and always remembered
A world champion - now and always. The disgraceful Australian government declares a public holiday to celebrate a foreign Queen's birthday when it isn't even her birthday; and yet the great Lionel Rose is regarded as a distant relic. We should have a heroes day each year and take a day off, starting with a Lionel Rose Day. Get rid of the stupid Queens birthday you pompous political sycophants and respect the true champions like Lionel Rose.
I had the pleasure of meeting Lionel and Lester Ellis about 20 years ago, both men could not have been more obliging or friendly and I'll never forget them for it.
@flynnyboy100 I heard on radio here in Melbourne that Lionel was a huge fan of the Australian country band The Hawking Brothers. He used to watch them nearly every week at a pub they performed at and they often invited him to join them on stage to do a few songs. They ended up backing Lionel on the recordings he made. the proceeds of which he put back into his family part of which he used to purchase a house for his Mum in Drouin. A truly wonderful Australian.
@hirdy6 Yeah Mate, Johnny Young explained it all this morning on 6IX. John was a boxing fan, he met the great Lionel, They went to a Hawking Brothers concert and Lionel said to John, hey brother, write a song for me! The rest is history! Written by Johnny Young with the Hawking Bros band as back up! John actually lost it this morning talking about it, but big boys DO cry, dont they?
I remember when my dad brought this single home when I was 5-6 years old and it was played and played, it is a great song and brings fond memories of my childhood and of the man who sang it. THANK YOU Lionel...
lional i was only a child when i watch you fight on tv ,where you broke your hand ,i dont know who it was you were fighting ,your a true honour to us australians ,
@IamCharz Maybe call Johnny Young at 6IX in Perth, he does the morning show, worth a try. Plus he was a friend of Lionels and wrote this song, hope this helps, cheers, Flynny.
@GeriatricDinosaur, You must be psychic mate. A state funeral is exactly what he deserved and received and what a wonderful celebation of his life it was.
I watched him fight Harada, I watched him struggle with alcohol and struggle with culture change, I heard his songs, always listened, and when ever i did see this fine young man, I was happy for him and always smiled for his success. Now I am sad that our days are in their wilight and was so sad today that "our Lonel" died so very young. He did give so much Pride to so many Australians. I feel more alone today.
i met this wonderful man when i was 9yrs old in Geelong, years ago, he was a hero to all, and my mother loved this song....he was also the first Indigenous Australian i had ever met, his kind face, and he done so so much for people all over...Condolences to the Rose family, this man deserves a State Funeral.
A world champion - now and always. great song by a great boxer. I stll have the original recording as well as the dvd Rose Against the Odds he was an awesome boxer. Did you know that in 1969 not only was he Australian of the year but also sportsman of the year? So deserving
I loved Lionel when he defeated Fighting Harada, came back a hero, fell on hard times but still standing strong even though his health is suffering. The one unknown question which will stand the test of time is who was the best Lionel or Johnny beautifully they never fought.
The past and present boxers association still has quarterly meetings where Lionel and Johnny attend when they can
re the music i still have a copy of Lionels original LP another great song is " pick me up o your way down"
Great song - lovely catchy number and nice lyrics. (Another piece of Johnny Young's brilliance as a songwriter). We were so proud of Lionel - as our boxing hero (and Aussie of the year, I think). A champion in many ways - was this our first indigenous No. 1??
