When most tenors sing this, they try to portray Canio's sadness and heartbroken-ness. What they forget is that Canio is PISSED and ends up KILLING his own wife. I mean, if you knew your wife was cheating on you with someone else, making you a cuckold, and that the bastard was touring with you, you'd be angry as hell. del Monaco captures that perfectly and the acting is incredible. I have to say that this is the best version of the aria.
I've only recdently gotten into classical and opera pieces and it has to be said this is one of my favourates, followed by vide cor meum, this genre just tells a story like no other genre of music can
@hopelesslyderanged YouTube is not the only thing keeping opera alive -- the HD Simulcasts of the New York Met is helping a lot! And we have great new talent (Exhibit 1: Juan Diego Florez).

Wow! Did he always act so splendidly - I'm not surprised the Japanese love it - it has the ritual intensity of kabuki! He actually reminds me of Toshio Mifune in a Kurosawa movie!
Though I like Pavarotti's musical interpretation best, Monaco has the most convincing acting. Superb, actually. I'd like to see Gene Hackman do better - and not swear. :)
Idk, I haven't seen this production but I thought Pavarotti had a really nice womanizing/manic air about him. He gave me goose bumps, too, at the end after the killings when he said, "the play is over"
Of the dramatic tenors, Placido Domingo and Mario Del Monaco are overwhelming. Both are superb actors: while everyone else plays this tragically, tearfully, Del Monaco brings a pathos, anger, definace to this role that set his style and acting abilities apart from all the others. I marvel every time I see one of these amazing clips of his perfromances: YouTube is a gift to all of us who love opera, and love debating the differences between these tenors. BRAVISSIMO, MARIO!!!!
@jd1906sf I agree with most of your statement. However Domingo is not a dramatic tenor.I believe he is a lyric spinto at best. Some SPINTO tenors were Caruso Corelli Tucker Campagnano Barioni Penno.Few are in the dramatic category like MDM Zenatello MartinelliTamagno De Muro Piccaluga Vinay Vickers Fleta & perhaps Pertile&Merli.Enjoy
I like very much del monaco....I like this aria by del monaco in the second part (from "ridi pagliaccio sul tuo amore infranto")...but before it's too much "short"-singing....
It's too sad that del monaco suffered from a short career from over-use/function. He put too much effort into the notes above his secondo passaggio. Most people would agree he could've had a much longer and greater career if he wasn't hyper-functional! =(
Do you know what you're writing about? I think you must mistake del Monaco for di Stefano who did, indeed, have too short a career and ruined his voice in no more than 15 years.
Mario del Monaco, however, had a career of more than 30 years and even at his last concerts, in mid 70s, he was in glorious voice.
Being not a big fan of Del Monaco's in general, I have to admit: This is great! An excellent example of art coming alive through skill and emotional commitment of the artist.
performance wise he put a lot into versus pavorotti and domingo (as well as others) but for me it just went by too fast until he belts out the crescendo where he declares to smile at his shattered love was probably his best part, it doesnt carry as much as domingo's or pavorotti's, but then again it is an older rendition so...well played
He was the definitive Canio of the 50s/60s. When I was lived a college dorm I used to play del Monaco, Tucker, and Corelli to my friends (who knew nothing about opera or the tenor voice). The look they get in their eyes when they first hear the voices is priceless. This just goes to show that the majority of society doesn't realize that a male voice can sound liket this...

Oh man, you are too much. lol. Reason I thought you just were trying to piss me off was, if you were trying to make a clever conversation, you would explain WHY you think Pavarotti was better. Instead, you just said 'pavarotti is better' which implies that you just want to contradict my statement to tick me off.
I have horrible taste? Yeah, me and seven million Neapolitans.
But if you're saying there's no accounting for taste, you're right. There is accounting for intelligence, and you have none. Go ahead, call me a Nazi. That will be persuasive.
Sorry, I just don't think of this as a Pavarotti song, just as I prefer Pavarotti's Nessun dorma to del Monaco's rendition (though I haven't found an operatic performance of del Monaco on YouTube, only recitals). There are other comparables, but I like del Monaco the best.

Get over it, you fail, you even come here often enough to read my posts which provoke you to explain yourself to me, GIRLYBOY!And do not try to push around the "LOL, I'm so clever, I'm making him angry, look at the insults he's using , he must be angry" stuff.
I just read About Del Monaco.. His Nick name Was " THE BRASS BULL" I think They should have called him " THE BRASS BALLS " Cause NOBODY sings with the Balls that he has ! When He Died ~ they Laid Him to Rest in his OTELLO Costume.
I love this song so much, I talk to my friends about this, and other songs. They knew it as "The Sad Clown Song" it's hard being the only one of my friends who loves opera.
dude, i was in the same boat as you when i was 14, i love the masters, and opera, and the 14th and 15th century catholic masses, but i will tell you something, you appear more sophisticated and it will drive girls crazy. so long as you dont act like a dweeb or over play it.
Well, thankfully I came from a family of opera singers and fans, so they were glad I wasn't a fan of the 'other music'. To tell the truth, I like old 70s pop and some old rock, but I don't tell my family, they'd go crazy.
Thanks. I'm starting to see what you mean. Whenever I finish a solo recital or whenever I finish choral rehearsal, girls come up to me and start saying things like "you have such a beautiful voice" or "OMG, your voice broke my heart." I love being a tenor:)
if you find any tenor today that sings like Del Monaco, please let me know. That's reason why today the opera is so boring. Art with no art. I miss the Del Monaco, Corelli, Di Stefano, etc.
Yeah, it's unfortunate that as we bring opera into stadiums etc... it becomes a freak show of vocal technique, not an artform. Even though it can reach larger audiences, the performers born of such an age don't know the greats of the past. However, there are good young singers. Piotr Beczala sings like the ghost of Bjorling, and Franco Tenelli, though he's not very young, is a GREAT dramatic tenor.
Wow..Monaco..no wonder Bocelli was his fan. He's not just singing, but he acts! look at the laughter, usually it's a sad laughter, but he did a maniacal laughter that defines more sadness and depression..

Great, and Bocelli is even better, isn't he? Even though he'd probably have all that sound equipment next to him on stage during the opera...
Quit bugging me, I've stopped messing with you, so may you do me the same favor?

One of my favorite renditions of this aria...del Monaco nails it.

I don't think anyone will be able to sing this aria better than Del Monaco, he raised the standard of perfection.

Yes,indeed you fail, but i was obliged to inform all the good people here of your pathetic trolling. But you're more of an attention whore than a troll, I guess.
"I love opera" "dillinger escape fucking plan" blah blah yadda yadda, just get the fuck out, missy.

It would seem I continue to succeed as a troll as you insist on angrily responding from you.
I like how calling you "kiddo" pissed you off so you tried your own version and called me "missy".
Not only is it working, but you're learning from me how to troll. Funny.

Get over it, you fail, you even come here often enough to read my posts which provoke you to explain yourself to me, GIRLYBOY!And do not try to push around the "LOL, I'm so clever, I'm making him angry, look at the insults he's using , he must be angry" stuff.
TEH joke's on you. A predictable

I love this song so much, I talk to my friends about this, and other songs. They knew it as "The Sad Clown Song" it's hard being the only one of my friends who loves opera.
epicondyles 4 years ago 4
Same. It's hard being 14 and loving opera when you can't relate to anyone else.
phantom4087 3 years ago
I am in the same boat, I loved opera with a passion, have really since I was about 4 when me and my grandfather would listen to opera.
bipolarclerk 3 years ago
dude, i was in the same boat as you when i was 14, i love the masters, and opera, and the 14th and 15th century catholic masses, but i will tell you something, you appear more sophisticated and it will drive girls crazy. so long as you dont act like a dweeb or over play it.
poperussian 3 years ago
That was my problem...in my teens I drove everyone nuts with the opera. I didn't give a damn what they thought, and I still don't.
GermanOperaSinger 3 years ago
Damn right. My family thinks im crazy for liking it. Because I also love rock. but once you go opera you dont go back
LifeJuice90 3 years ago
Well, thankfully I came from a family of opera singers and fans, so they were glad I wasn't a fan of the 'other music'. To tell the truth, I like old 70s pop and some old rock, but I don't tell my family, they'd go crazy.
GermanOperaSinger 3 years ago
Thanks. I'm starting to see what you mean. Whenever I finish a solo recital or whenever I finish choral rehearsal, girls come up to me and start saying things like "you have such a beautiful voice" or "OMG, your voice broke my heart." I love being a tenor:)
phantom4087 3 years ago 2
if you find any tenor today that sings like Del Monaco, please let me know. That's reason why today the opera is so boring. Art with no art. I miss the Del Monaco, Corelli, Di Stefano, etc.
dissstefannno 4 years ago
Yeah, it's unfortunate that as we bring opera into stadiums etc... it becomes a freak show of vocal technique, not an artform. Even though it can reach larger audiences, the performers born of such an age don't know the greats of the past. However, there are good young singers. Piotr Beczala sings like the ghost of Bjorling, and Franco Tenelli, though he's not very young, is a GREAT dramatic tenor.

Wow..Monaco..no wonder Bocelli was his fan. He's not just singing, but he acts! look at the laughter, usually it's a sad laughter, but he did a maniacal laughter that defines more sadness and depression..
hansquad 4 years ago 2
you wont find a better interpretation of Vesti la Giubba. Monaco does it better than anyone else in the world.
mattpl40 4 years ago 3
I totally agree, he is the only one that can make me cry.

my favorite Pagliaccio, it's all about his interpretation, thruly impressive.

His voice is wonderful. His acting rivals the manic performance by Swedish tenor Bengt Nordfors, viewable elsewhere on youtube.
