@ChrisRocksYourAnus Right, "Laotian" refers to people who came from Laos (the country). "Lao" is one ethnic group. Other Laotian ethnic groups include Hmong, Mien, Tai Dam, Khmu. It's is ok to say 'Laotian" instead of "Lao," but it's not correct to say "Laos" when you are not talking about the country. The point of the video is to distinguish between "Lao" and "Laos." Remember that in the English language, Viet people refer to themselves by their extended name "VIETNAMESE". Similarly, the English name for Lao people is our extended name "LAOTIAN". They could all be wrong, but I have read numerous sources that said that the 'S' was added by the French when they combined all the Lao kingdoms into one coutry of Laos. As you may know, the French don't pronouce the 'S' at the end. The French word for the people of Laos is 'Laotien' and it was Americanized to 'Laotian.' To me, Lao and Laotian are interchangeable, but I would never use Laos in place of the other two.

@B0RNfree The purpose of this video is to convince people to not use 'Laos' instead of 'Lao.' If people want to use 'Laotian' instead is Lao, that's ok, too, in my opinion. But, I don't think it's ever correct to use 'Laos' in place of 'Lao' or 'Laotian.' If you want to make your own video to convince people to use 'Laotian' exclusively, I'd love to see it. :))

The country is Lao under the Royal government, I think the S was added after the comnmunist took over the country (Lao People'S Democratic Republic" ) There is no correct way to say it since the Laotian FOB wanted to change Laotian to Lao or Laos when it comes to categorization of a ethnic. For example when we are speaking in Laotian we say" muang Lao, not muang Laos" But the real proper way is Laotian for a person or language. The country would be Lao or Laos depending on your allegiance.

@sillyman7111 Yup you are correct. Which is why "Laotian" reflectively refers to nationality (which includes Khamu, Kui, Mien, Hmong, ethnic Lao, etc.). However "Lao" just refers to the the language spoken and the ethnic Lao people. Laos as a whole in my opinion is just as Western simplification of "Muang Lao."
