The Puritans came to North America to avoid religious persecution. Later other religions arrived. I think the idea of seperation of church and state began back then. People of multiple religions, each wanting to follow their own faith, cooperated in town hall gatherings. A Quaker, a Puritan, a Catholic and a person of no strong faith agreeing how to protect themselves in what they saw as a wilderness.
Actually the puritans persecuted everyone else. The left to escape persecution for them-selfs but that doesn't mean that they didn't do it when they got the chance them-self.
The first generation Puritans did. The second generation started to questions this life choice mentality. (learned from letters and diaries from that period.)

I surprised children are still being made to pray in American schools. They do still in a lot of British schools, possibly most of them.
