  • Pimpin' Cool

  • YOU DAMM SKIPPY ... 1972 WAS REAL REAL SWEET, MUSICALLY.

  • @bftiger75 Was it!, I was standing on the bar at the Wonder Gardens in Atlantic City when they tore the house down.

  • Wooooooooooooooooowwwww!!!!!!!

  • one of the most underrated horn bands, Everything else was soooo tight!

  • WONDERFUL music from THE PAST!!..What happened with the music? Now a "song" saying the word "BABY" 1000 times is easy a hit. And, curiously, ENGLAND make real & good music (Jamiroquai, Amy Winehouse, etc) and U.S.A. not..

  • BAYBAY....BAYBAY.....BAYBAY!!!!!!

  • i can hear bobby womack in this ... you can tell this is a bobby womack song...

  • @looksrdeceivn all through it,but they went in on it.

  • One of my favorite groups back in the day.

  • GREAT! great tune, gret singing, great memories! There's a live video on youtube that's worth checking out too, just had me smiling with 'back in the day' feelings!

  • I CAN TELL HE LOVES TO SING!!! DAMN

  • Sirius/XM Radio Channel Soultown brought me here! This song came out the year I was born. DAMN. 1972 was sweet! I believe in the human family without a doubt but integration messed us up. We are no near as talented a people as we used to be.

  • LOUDER!!!!!!!!!!

  • Turn it up!!!

  • I Love both versions! "Bobby Womack" gives a more soulful version, and "New Birth" gives it an upbeat, lightly funky, dance version. But both versions are really great!

  • @romeoelectric I Agree!

  • Forget what's out today...this is REAL SOUL MUSIC!!!

  • I saw them live when this song came out and it was the first and only time i ever saw a group play their hit song TWICE during their set because the audience DEMANDED IT !!! them boys set it off in livingston college gym!!!!

  • i saw them live when this song came out and it was the first and only time i ever saw a group play their hit song TWICE during their set because the audience DEMANDED IT!!!

  • New Birth's live performance is wicked! (check out the you-tube upload, the only downer is that you can't leave comments) The lead singer blew me away, the back-up singers and the band were awesome! I can't understand the audience though, every body in the place should have been doing it on the good foot! You can't make me understand that!.

  • I just finished listening to Bobby Womack's version (replayed it 3 times) I love New Birth but after listening, I had to back track to Bobby's! I am however doing it on the good foot! Baby, baby, Baby, heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • New Birth did an okay version of this song. Bobby's version is still the best. New Birth's lack the grit and soul. The tempo was too fast. Matter of fact the only other version that comes close to rivaling Bobby's is the one done by Kokomo. Sorry New Birth. But do love their ballads. Peace

  • One of the few remakes that are actually better than the original. No disrespect to Bobby Womack because he's one of my favorites also

  • This dude LOVES James Brown

  • I'm sorry, I've heard Bobby Womack's version, and I like New Birth's version better. This one always got people up to dance no matter where and when! Bobby's was finger popping groove.

  • NOPE, BOBBYS' VERSION HAS MORE TOP END----------OUTRUNS THIS ON THE FREEWAY ENYDAY!

  • this was the beginning of the disco era. the sanctuary & the zoo.

  • Man, I am such a fan of Bobby Womack I almost feel guilty likin this version a little bit more..

  • @PAMCAKES1946 bobby is great but newbirth took it away from him with funkiness.you have to have been 8yrsold and heard bobbys' version then be nine yrsold and hear newbth blasting out of this ladys' house with all the kids slinging their heads off while the leaves of fall fall.they made this song feel so damn good to a kid.

  • jacie i was 12yrs old love it!!!!

  • Being born in 1952, put me right at the start of the biggest musical explosion of the 60's and 70's. Thanks mom and dad for making me your first born, while having fun doing it.

  • this song is a classic.

    1973

  • Awesome! This was my theme song back in the day. Thank you for putting up this version! Loved everything New Birth made esp. Wildflower. They were truly ahead of their time (along with the Jimmy Castor Bunch)!

  • I'm blessed to have grown up listening these and other Soul/ Funk brothers and Sisters...on this song New Birth did it to death/ life!!!

  • Oh my goodness!!! I have this song on my iphone. Love this jam. This is music of my generation. Not that rap mess and digitized music. This is music along with greats such as Sly and the Family Stone; Heatwave, Blue Notes, Delonics, Con Funk Shun and many more great artists. Hey this would make a wonderful added addition to Unsung.

  • I believe one of the Marvelettes sang with this band.

  • i heard the magnificent pam Grier sang on this track.

  • @MrBbaker57 YES SHE DID-ON WOMACK'S VERSION!

  • Like this version, but love the original by Bobby Womack.

  • Remember this one from a house party in Money-Earning! This and EWF's "Power" were our fave bump jams

  • "I know sometimes you wanna get away from home, but I get upset when you stay too long"...lol Wish I can put that on my front door!!

  • Boy oh Boy. My childhood. I am sooo glad I was alive during this era. If you're too young to remember. You are soooo unfortunate.

  • Still one of my favorite tunes. Just good clean fun. Unlike what's put on the radio now a days.

  • Funkier than a fat mans draws. This one song made me want to learn to play the lead and bass guitar. Those cow bells can make your granny shake her fanny too. I love funk, soul and just good music, moves my soul for real.

  • @vscol I feel ya bro...I wish i was alive when this kinda music was out on the radio!

  • Funkier than a fat mans draws.

  • love that, "baby, baby, BABY!!!"

  • 1972 The Turf Club Springwood Ave Asbury Park NJ dancing all night with the wilson sisters

  • Bobbys version was good but this is the better one for me! They goin in!!!

  • Now I love Bobby Womack but I think New Birth got him on this song so funky

  • A good song to sing for a talent contest. If you sang this song right you might win.

  • Absolutely funk music

  • I Can Understand This Groove And Thanks To Bobby Womack For This Nasty Funky Groover

  • awesome track *****

  • Ain`t nothing like sweet soul music. One of my all time favorites. How can you avoid the temptation of pressing rewind when this jam is on? I know I can`t.

  • Grew up listening to Hard Rock & Soul , just liked any music that was Gritty and had soul and New Birth knew how to smack your BOO-BOO !

  • Now I have this 45. Thanks E.

  • @obscene248 Please flag obscene248 as SPAM, let's stop these fucking spammers from advertising their website's like this was some kind of free ad space.

  • that album cover with the black eggs was my favorite album to clean my grass on! LOL and I can understand it was my favorite by New Birth. Thanks for the memories.....gave up grass a long time ago though!>LOL

  • How can you die twice? By listening to the studio version, which was already a killer that I've been listening to since I've been a kid, and then looking at the 6:24 live version, which, in my opinion, confirmed The New Birth's status as one of the greatest, most underrated bands of the 1970's and killed me again lol. They play and sing "I can understand it" to the letter of the studio version but, they built upon it with the rawness, power and emotion that only a live performance can bring.

  • Snap! This song takes me back in time. I'm in my early thirties. But, I first heard this song in North Carlina when I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC when I served in the Army. I heard this song on the radio in my car driving to dinner with a girl I was dating . . . and damn we started jamming to this song, my bones were shaking, my body was gyrating, and we got down. I'm anglo (Cuban/German). . . but I assure you . . I was moving like a "brotha" with all the fire running through my veins.

  • THIS WAS THE JAM BACK IN THE DAY. YOU KNOW WHAT? THEY SOUND EVEN BETTER TODAY THAN THEY DID YESTERYEAR. EVERYTHING NEW BIRTH SANG WAS GOOD. THE VOICE THE MUSIC.AWEEEEESOME.

  • This has always been my JAAM and I was only 6 when it dropped! I don't know if any of you had a chance to check out the live version here on Youtube; I just did and Leslie Wilson was nothing short of phenomenal. Check it out.

  • New Birth rocked my world when I was growing up - and it still sounds just as good today!

  • Sounds like Bobby Womack mixed with James Brown

  • hey ya'll should check the version by the valentinos.. that's the best version EVER!! respect to new birth they are great too!

  • Would someone PLEASE post "Pains of Love" Pleeeeeeeassssssseeeee

  • Get on Down!

  • This is grown folks music. This is the music that we listened to back in the day.I loved everything that sung. Awesome memories.

  • This version is MUCH better than Bobby Womack's.....

  • @Diva2678 New Birth's version has more anger in it. Bobby's was more bitter.

  • @Diva2678 - You can't be serious. Bobby Womack owns this song!! The remade his song. Hahahaha!! Now that's funny.

  • @branstan8000

Both versions are good. I just happen to like this one better.....I am crazy about Bobby Womack though. Just not on this song!!!!!!! Ha Ha

  • Can ya'll smell the STANK on that?!...I can. And "I Can Understand It", too...LOL. New Birth, is the "sho' 'nuff" shit, dude. What ya'll know 'bout this, right cher'??

  • @MisterCrazyLegs LOL! You're too funny. Love Bobby, but this version is much better. (Doin' the Penguin)

  • @alexalot23 there were so many underrated groups because there style did not crossover but they were stars above STARS where I grew up. Can u Understand it!!!!

  • @alexalot23 I have to agree. I'm a big fan of 70s music and I absolutely LOVE this group!

  • great song!!!

  • this was one of the best ever ...one only better gotta get a nut...number 1

  • yes yes back in the day....also i was a drummer and this an d gotta get a nut was the best and challanging to learn and to play however it made me better

  • Me and my band worked relentlessly to capture the power and style of this band in those times. It wasnt easy but they and Earth, Wind & Fire were some of our favorites to copy.

As the drummer this was especially challenging because unlike R&B, Funk & DooWop the drummers did very little other than keep time. Here Harvey Fuqua has all kinds of riffs, rolls and gallops. Something unheard of before THIS group came on the scene.

    5 stars always!

  • Harvey Fuqua produced "New Birth"!! Robin Russell was the drummer!!

  • Thanks for clearing that up. Its been a very long time since ive been that intimately involved in the music industry. I havent even played in some 10 years.

  • I understand!! December 2009 will be 4 years for me!! I REALLY MISS IT!!! :-(

  • Start playin again if you are able!!! We need more cats to show these younger cats how its DONE!!!!

  • Somebody call a doctor 'cuz Robin Russell on the drums is SICK!!!!!

  • THAT guy has the craziest fills I have ever heard, listen the triple fills he's doing on the Kick drum!!!

  • Tell me about it!!! lol

  • @wanshei Did you play on this??

  • groovin'!!!
