I remember when I was 16 and hearing this song ... especially the drumbeat at the beginning ... and how much I loved this song.... years later I read Neil Peart's book The Masked Rider... in the book Neil was lying on the roof of a hut in Togo in South Africa... and in the distance he heard a great drum beat... and he used that beat for the beginning of this song... No more wasted years... ! And I'm proud to say Neil partly inspired me to name my company Heresy Email Services
@timandrew614 I'm white American, Scot, Irish? Your point? View these fine 3 men as best ever. Again your point as to half Czech? And yes I remain aware of the sabre rattling around the world?
I've interpreted this song to be about the Cold War, mainly after the fall of the Berlin Wall looking back on the 30 years before it. I could be wrong, but judging from the lyrics and the year the song was produced, it makes sense,
Ya dude, I try to tell people that all they gotta do is listen to Rush while reading their lyrics daily and they will strive to achieve enlightenment from the love and common sense that Neil peart write's about. Beautiful, Heresy is one of my all time favorites, and in my opinion there was never any low's for Rush, only highs, highs and highs. Pure, music, trully. The best progressive rock has always been done by geniuses who can think much more deeply than the common man can comprehend.Amazing
For all those wondering why they don't play this song live anymore - This song is about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the fall of communism in Germany, ending 40 years of dictatorial Communist rule :)
@Richardb21 You're right, but I think more generally it's about the fall of Communism as a treat to the West. "All those wasted years" - all the time we spent terrified (not without justification) that a nuclear war could come. "Do we have to be forgiving, at last?" - yes, because we won, and we now had to embrace our former enemy and bring him into our system. "Do we have to say goodbye to the past?" - yes, because the world had changed and we had to acknowledge that.
Neal Peart is one of the greatest poets of my generation. You don't neeed to know any other bands. If I had to only listen to one groups music for the rest of my life, I'd start with Tom Sawyer and RUSH
We don't have to say goodbye to the people who populated the past. Those people have hopefully learned and have grown. Everyone...yes, even that person that's making you shake your head at what I'm saying now...deserves the benefit of the doubt.
People buy the things they want...and borrow for a little more. If you didn't need it, that's one thing, but If they didn't truly want it either, what a waste of their future paying it off. And it happens every day.
@Durandal1717....don't forget about Red Sector A...(Holocaust story) and Manhattan Project...(building of the Atomic Bomb)...these are also unbelievable moments in our history and Extremely emotional !!!
For those who are just learning to enjoy Rush and their insightful, beautiful music, let me tell you that you'll nigh never be disappointed by anything they do or have done. They have their highs and lows, much as any band, but they are an awesome group of exceptional musicians, and well loved by their fans of all ages.
@deathrib This as you say goes without saying. If I had to rate a number 1, I would be hard-pressed to choose. But may I offer, Rush is so far out in front it is quite pathetic.
"Todos esos precisosos años perdidos...¿quién los pagará?"
La letra de esta canción se refiere a la época de la caída del muro de Berlín y el término de la Guerra Fría, época de cambios que sin embargo lleva a la reflexión...¿de qué sirvió todo ese tiempo perdido?
@shavepate As a child of the Cold War, we were taught to really hate the Soviets. I mean real high grade "kill those godless commie bas@#ds" kind of hate. I think the idea is that now that the war is over, and we see how pointless it all was, we have to "forgive our old enemies" and think of them as people, not monsters.
@josephgioielli thanks for that - makes perfect sense, and maybe makes one wonder how/why we seem to 'need' an enemy. i wonder if it's really possible to get there on an interpersonal level - to really forgive.

This is one of my favorite Rush songs of all time. Liberty beats tyranny any day, even after "all those wasted years".

3 guys are in a bar.
One of them says: I have the longest arms in the world.
The other one says: I have the longest legs in the world.
The third guy says: I have the greatest musical talent.
So they decide to go to the office of the Guinness Book of World Records.
The first guy comes out and says: Yes! I do have the longest arms!
The second guy comes out and says: Great! I do have the longest legs!
The third guy comes out pretty angry and says: WHO ON EARTH IS RUSH?!?!

'The bloody revolution
All the warheads in its wake
All the pain and suffering
All a big mistake'
This has to be their song with the most emotional weight behind it. What a moment in history; definitely one of Neil's best.
