  • this is from the Smos. Bros. show, I have this on VHS, great clip

  • Groundbreaking musical political commentary in just show #4 of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, 1967, but two months after it was recorded. Written by Stills as a response to the Sunset Strip riots when LA police enforced a curfew on young people going to nightclubs, and a mass demonstration with mass arrests resulted. When the show was taped, the song WASN'T EVEN IN THE Top 40. Soared to the top soon after. SNL, John Stewart, Colbert, and Maher owe much to the Smothers Brothers Show.

  • This is the sound of the 60s like no other sing

  • I'm still here those>Chick-A-Dee-Dee-Dees are sumthin else ... But moving along the Winds of Change on this Freedom Flight ---> We are going to be flying on one of my all-time favorite POLITICOCOMICAL VOICES ... Who else but THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS... FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH WAS SUCH A FINE FIT {:~)

  • @45gsoldier- Tom Smothers of the Smothers Brothers

  • wow neil young too

  • Looks like the Smothers Brothers show.

  • Choice quality stuff from one of the best bands ever. Buffalo Springfield didn't last long but they put out some tremendous music while they were together, and Stephen Stills is in a class by himself - singing, song writing and playing guitar.

  • stevin stills man, what a pretty voice

  • Tom Smothers was hilarious. The Smothers Brothers had most of the best bands play their show. They were cool dudes.

  • Love the Tommy Smothers cameo!

  • Is that tosh at 0:25 hahah

  • @arocknrollfan omg I saw it too.... wtf?

  • @arocknrollfan LOL!

  • 20th Century: Last of good music. Rock or Pop.

  • Wow. I just knew now who played that little guitar solo riff. It's Neil Young. I'm amazed.

  • Righteous sideburns Neil Young!

  • I feel like I'm in Pleiku Viet Nam every time I hear this song.

  • Stephen Stills....one of the most under appreciated guitar players of our time. Thanks for posting!!

  • OMG--I love you for uploading this!

  • Neil Young used to be so cute

  • Occupy--1967 and 2011 are closer than the 43 years might indicate!

  • @MarkXian So well said. I think we both know what comes next. Another old song called "Ohio" by CSN&Y. I'm simply waitng for it myself, almost came true in Oakland the other night. I think there's a Mayor in NY City that needs a history lesson! Somedays I'm seeing videos from my own Nation that look very similiar to images I saw coming from Egypt not so long ago.

  • @MarkXian you got that right SGT Harbinger 82nd ABN

  • Occupy.

  • this song is satanic.. - 666 likes \m/

  • i would kill to have a hat like that :)

i would bring that thing to school AND work!

  • What a field day for the heat........stop children!

  • got to see these guys in a small club when they first hit the scene...great band

  • yess sounds good too

  • it's hard to believe Neil Young was ever that young. I'm almost 40 and he's been old and crotchety as long as I can remember!

  • This is actually an awesome clip. Thanks so much to SixtiesPopGold1 or whoever u are for providing this, but it made my day just a little bit brighter.

  • Stephen alters his vocals and Neil's riffs are off

Agreed, though, the Smothers Bros. BS was stupid.

  • @greggiebaba YOU IDIOT! WITHOUT BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD THIS AWESOME SONG WOULD HAVE NEVER CAME OUT!

  • Awesome. Definitely live.

  • @TraneDisorder ok dats nice idc nd never seen dat movie so calm down wat if ppl tld u u shoulodve said tropic thunder think bout it nd den shutup

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever made in that period! A real vietnam song. I hope they will tour in europe.

  • My BOYS

  • Not funny. There's certain things that are sacred.

  • uffffffff..........what a song man! (good job friend)

  • Tropic Thunder !!!

  • @KrAzyStUltUs6 Tropic Thunder? This song was used for like 10 seconds in that movie. You should have said Lord of War instead.

  • @TraneDisorder Are you really getting mad, because someone doesn't associate a song with the same movie as you? Relax dude...

  • @JPLV Exactly what part of that comment made me come off as mad? "Relax dude"? Do you consider speaking in a normal, calm manner as a reason to tell someone to relax? I was just surprised he said the movie he did. If anything your comment makes me mad 'cause you're so fucking stupid.

  • Any chance the whole performance is live, or am I just dreaming?

  • My absolute favorite song right now

  • yet another mancunian legend!

  • I'm sorry once again. I keep watching this video and what keeps standing out to me is Stephen's demeanor. He is so relaxed and enjoying the moment. This video does this song justice.

  • I would like to say that I like how Stephen just shrugged off the smuther brothers mundane attempt to lighten the mood of a song that had serious ramifications at the time. The song was a very serious depiction of a real event that made those in charge look bad and you have a corperate televsion station wanting their "hosts" to make like of it. Stephen and Neil both were bigger in that moment.

  • This video astonishes me. To see Stephen Stills, just chill, singing one of the most influential songs of that era gives me goose bumps.

  • shhhhhhhhhhh ..... just listen...

  • My Mom's a Fag. She sexes men.

  • Dag!! It's sounds as good as the recorded version. Maybe just the vocals are live cause Neil's Guitar sounds identical to the record. I dunno... I don't care... never mind... Carry on people...

  • that, my friends, is what is called beautiful

  • Is this from 1966?

  • God, Stephen Stills was gorgeous, wasn't he?

  • @rasputin63 FAG!!!

  • @NickBigsmoke haha... it's true, I'm gay, and proud of it. Oh well.

  • @rasputin63 The comment below this one is an attempt at a joke. Hope you enjoy it. ; }

  • @NickBigsmoke Your Mom's a fag.

  • @KingKook Fag jokes? What, are we 13 years old now?

  • @rasputin63 Yes we ARE 13 years old now. Happy Birthday to you and me. Yeah!

  • @KingKook eat me

  • @NickBigsmoke Is that what you say when you're angry or when you're turned on? It's a bit ambiguous.

  • @KingKook eat my shorts!! fat boy!!

  • @NickBigsmoke I'm not fat. I'm big boned! And big assed. And big balled. And big tongued. And big mouthed...

  • Is that Val Kilmer on backing vocals?

  • @billdoesjudo Nope, that's Richie Furay. He went on to start a band called Poco. :-)

  • so sad. america is losing its anglo saxon heritage. europe fell, america is falling. only the eastern bloc is left.

  • @GPerch123: Seems you are still stuck in the 70s or what? What do you know in Ukraine about the "west"? I guess not a lot.America has not necessarily only an"Anglo-American heritage"-it was always an immigrant country(+that was even the intention of the USA from the beginning on!)+also lots of huge immigrant parts from other parts of the world:Germans, Irish, Polish, French, Spanish, Greek, Arabic etc etc. These immigrant groups would not be very delighted if you told them of"Anglo-Saxon"heritage.

  • @GPerch123: Your whole terminology is absurd+wrong, by the way ! You write:"Anglo-Saxon heritage".

The Saxons actually invaded Britain(or came peacefully)between 400-600 A.D.They were quite aware of their GERMAN heritage which even is prominent in the dialects they speak in England now.The Angles came from Danemark(which didn´t exist 400-600),their dialects in England now sound more influenced by Danish,Anglian is a dialect of the later Danish. Both groups came from North Germany+later Danemark.

  • @GPerch123:But not only the Angles+Saxons influenced the English language+British culture as a whole.

Other influences:Scandinavian vikings from Norway or Sweden(even today mocked about in the Muppets Show),the Normans who invaded Britain in 1066(battle of Hastings)+left a considerable part of their French language in the English language.Last but not least the Romans themselves who occupied England till the fourth century up to the region north of Manchester. And then the Celts of course !

  • @GPerch123:The English language has many more words from Latin or French than the German language (+we already have many Latin words),so get educated+inform yourself about the many foreign cultural parts which can influence a language,a culture,a country."Anglo-Saxon heritage"is silly tribalism of the worst kind-an insult to other folks in a country.

And no worry-our Arabic Germans are mostly very well integrated+we´ll also take the Turks to task.

All clichés of the west in the east are crap.

  • @GPerch123:....I am also "fascinated" to hear that the "Eastern bloc" still exists !

In what time do you live there, partly still the Middle Ages ?

Update your history knowledge...smells a bit rancid.

  • Wonderful

  • Buffalo Springfield=Awesome Talent!

  • awesome song.

  • this sucks

  • @ladybug243ify tell me how?

  • It's definitely live--Stills varies the melody at points (most obviously the first line of verse 2), it doesn't match the record. But it's definitely different from what I remember from the original Smothers broadcast--I'm pretty sure Stills was wearing a fringed buckskin jacket and there was a buckboard as a backdrop...

  • @MrBluesnik If it hadn't been live, Warner Music wouldn't have let me upload it. I tried to upload a playback version, but it failed.

  • @SixtiesPopGold1 i think the audience's laughter is thwarting warner music's detection software

  • @SixtiesPopGold1 Only the vocals are live...

  • @MrBluesnik I'm looking for the clip with the fringed jacket. It's the mental image I get when I think of them. Let me know if you find it?

  • @MrBluesnik - Ritchie singing live too ....

  • @MrBluesnik Comments: Vocals are live. Instruments are not (see Neil Youngs mimed work) - good video only spoiled by sad attempts at humour by Smothers Bros.

  • Lord Of War intro! :-)

  • I love them <3 beautiful people Infinite hearts!

  • YEAH!!! Neil Young!!!!!

  • This is the first time I saw a video with so much view yet no one dislike it

  • Hotdamn!

No one could wear a Stetson with half the flair as Stephen could in his younger days!

  • Vocals are live..

  • Stills is the shizznit

  • @treadman26 young is better

  • Neil young still going strong too mates

  • umm, not lip-synched!

Stills is an octave higher at 1:19, for example...

    sheesh!

  • Comment removed

  • Lip singing but any big band that was on sulivan or the smother brothers were lip singers for at least that show

  • This band could have easily been the Greatest Band in the world. Whilst Beatles were writing Love Love me do, Please Please Me She Luv U Yeah Yeah,(no disrespect) but the BS were writing For what its Worth

  • @jewellers100 yeah, but don't forget that Beatles also wrote Helter Skelter, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, I am the Walrus, Revolution...Actually,all Beatles' albums from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road were perfect, and all the songs were simply marvelous...well,at least IMHO...

    But,hey,Buffalo Springfield were GREAT!!

  • @OMBROU True , but how much did the beatles mean to me, after this tune?????....this spoke to me

  • @jewellers100 i agree with you , i love the Beatles , but Buffalo Springfield knocked everyone when it came out. it literally can sum up the 60's.

  • modern music isn't bad, you're all being close-minded. rap and shitty pop music isnt all there is... seriously there's a lot of psychedelic and folk music out there thats reminiscent of the 60s- all you gotta do is look for it.

  • @hombredelaguitarra

Yeah but most of it isn't even as good so what's the point?

  • It sounds like all the vocals are live, surprisingly.

  • Classic song, love it, and i had just put a cover of it on youtube, check it out, i would really appreciate it, rock on buffalo

  • at 2:20 isnt that one of the keno brothers from antiques roadshow?

  • I was lucky enough to be a teenager during the 60's, then, when I turned 18 in 1970, I heard what was supposed to be a hit - and I just couldnt believe it.

The song was "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters. And 'Your Song" by Elton John, and I said: 'WHAT IS THIS SHIT!?!?!" and I knew at that moment the 60's had ended.

  • @HandShock I didn't...I kept on shmonkin, and trippin......and playin this gem by steven stills

  • Music was way too beautiful during these times. Then the 80s and the 2000s happened...

  • @xxratedbuzz Don't worry it still exists. Black keys is a good example that good rock n roll still lives.

But the media is not to happy making people think for themselfs, they throw rihanna justin bieber and all the other worthless money hunting so called "artists" right in our faces. We just need to ignore it maybe it will stop some time.

Half billion people have watched a kid with a stupid haircut sing "Baby Baby baby OOH"

    It's sad...

But i'm glad that there are still people playing music.

  • What ever happened to the other guys in this group? Stills and young are legends.

  • Fuckin' idiotic puke bullshit they had to put up with just to sing one of the best songs of all time.

  • @quirkyooable you are so crass, they were staring on the smother's brothers show and they were having fun songs were always part of the skit. Smothers brothers were against the media crap and ahead of their time, that's why their show was pulled obviously you missed the point.

  • I read some of the comments on here and realize so many people miss the point. The Smothers Brothers are NOT forgotten. Their contribution is considered very important. The Band was NOT miffed by this presentation as speculated by some here. All it did was garner them an even larger audience. One comment points out that Stills and Young are in the R&R Hall of Fame and Smothers Brothers are No Where..First of all the R&R HOF is considered a joke. The musicians and the SB get along just fine.

  • Seems they had some fun doing this live session, a really good sound captured in this vid, thanks

  • He's not mad. After it shows Tommy Smothers with the gun, you can see Neil chuckling in the background. What a great vid.

  • The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was one of the very few places one could see bands like this with anti war views. The reason the Smother brothers are almost forgotten is because of their political views they were black balled. The skit was probaby agreed upon although Neil Young looked mad.

  • richie furay rockin the backing vox!

  • does anyone know how to play the drums on this?

  • I love this song, and God bless you Steven Stills! Also God bless you the Smothers Bros.

  • Serious song, too bad Smothers had to make a joke out of it. Thought he would know better.

  • @lovewonout8 I have to disagree. The Smothers bros were awesome, and giving these guys air play was awesome. Steven Stills was smiling, so they enjoyed it as well

  • @chgojack1 - There is a time & a place for comedy. During a live music performance isnt the time. What is Steven Stills supposed to do when in the middle of a live performance? All he can do is smile. Is he supposed to stop? Give a dirty look on national TV? There is nothing he can do - except go with it. Granted it was the SB show, but you dont see Carson, Letterman, Leno interferring with musicians.

Stills & Young are in the R&R Hall of Fame, where are Tom & Dick? Forgotten Nobodys

  • @shwantz3 i remember tom and dick. they were funny. what are they doing now, anyway?

  • @shwantz3 I still disagree, that's was part of the show. Jeez. It is impossible to respect the Smother's brothers and Buffalo Springfield at the same time?

  • @shwantz3 How can you honestly look at this, and not think the band is having a good time?

  • @shwantz3 I don't know, I was kinda mad too when I first saw this video, mostly cause my gramps was in Vietnam, I wanted it to be serious and not people trying to turn it into a laugh track, it felt like they were making fun of the Vietnam War or not taking it seriously.
