How much did this cost you man? I'm assuming you did it yourself? Sounds good, one mod I've really been wanting to do and I've heard you can get great results with the apexi afc neo
please answer this, i've been wanting to swap out my cam for a while now, and i was just wondering what did you do about the timing? did you have to get it reset? or do you have a method to keep you from doing that? because around here it costs like $600 just to get the timing reset for our cars. stupid computer controlled timing. anyway please let me know anything, thanks.
@alexhunter777 timing just stays the same. Its all digital so there's no need to worry about it. Are you talking electronic timing or cam timing? the only thing you need to set is mechanical cam timing. In the service manual it outlines how to do it. It is not hard at all. There is no computer timing or any of that crap on this car
@jamis33 im talking about the cam timing. I even took it to two mechanics and they couldnt do it, they said the honda shop had to do it because it was completely computer controlled.
@alexhunter777 thats bs. the ignition control is done by the computer but there is no timing to worry about. All you need to do is make sure the block and head are in time when you go to retension the timing belt. Sounds like your mechanics are idiots. Buy the haynes manual and read how to swap the cam. Its easy. Remove timingtbelt and valve cover, remove rocker assembly, remove cam gear, remove cam, stick cam in add cam gear bolt rocker assembly, set block and head at tdc and tension belt
@jamis33 yeah it i guess i need new mechanics. lol but thanks for the info, this is defiantly going to be the next thing i do to my car. probably get it ported and polished too.
@jamis33 i know this is 5 months old but if any one is reading who wants to swap cams, you also need to do the valve clearence, which is different then stock numbers (use a feeler gauge).
@alexhunter777 Top dead center cylinder one on compression stage, just take out the spark plugs and turn the crank till the straw in cylinder one is rising, than set the crank groove so its the same as the marking on the cover, than just aline both cames into the top position lock everything in place put the belt on, itghten the tensioner and timing is done, thats skipping the facts about opening the covers and removing the motor mount though
How did the turbo installation go, I just boosted my 04 lx last month and love it, a few minor things to smooth over, tuning, oil leak, new clutch and flywheel type stuff
if you did boost it by now, how does the vtec handle it cause I thought about doing that but I'm not too sure if it will be that effective
good job on the video, not many people are willing to show off their D17's
@DareDevil5692 I haven't finished it yet. Been having a lot of bad luck lately. Basically got the car boosted completely then realized I was missing some parts so I took it all off. Then I got all the parts I needed and realized my brake lines were toast. Gas prices are crazy and I commute to work so it hasn't happened yet. I would say you should call delta cams and just get a mild regrind on your lx cam. cost you like $100. OR personally i think the headswap with crower stage 2 cam
@DareDevil5692 got the turbo finished last weekend. I love it. I'm running kpro which is very worth it. It made everything soooo easy. oil leaks never end. Watch your main seal because they have a tendency to blow. switch out your pcv with a barbed fitting attached to a catch can. What kit are you running? what engine management? VTEC makes a huge difference in boost mostly because it gives you new cam options. It does feel awesome when vtec and boost kick in!
i did the same thing when i first did the swap on my 05. im converting it over now while my transmission is out. swapping back to stock clutch with the exedy light flywheel..p&p wont do any good without the exhaust flowing properly. might get the aem headers there only 135 here
@clownpup1 I got a really good deal on the whole head as a package and hadn't bought an exhaust yet. Shortly after this video was made I switched to a full catless headerback and had great results. That is now sold and i'm back to this setup and its alright. definitely slower. It is just temporary until i boost which should be 2-3 months
@jamis33 oh ok. i have a t3 to put in my d15b. got 3 stage vtec(twin solenoids) and i find it moves wayyy better than my d16y8(idk y). havent put on the kit as yet. wanna order a block guard, dont want to take no chances damaging the head. twin vtec heads aint too popular round here.
am thinking of port n polishing also but kinda expensive here. $1800 XCD.
@TheSkeeter17 might sound like shit to you but i really like the way it sounds. its pretty quiet in this vid but now with a headerback exhaust it sounds a lot meaner and its a lot quicker. im betting your 05 civic vp is pretty quiet and great for picking up groceries and driving to work
@jamis33 ya i love the way my vp sounds.. its an 05 vp with the a2 swap, crower stg1 cam, exedy flywheel, clutchmaster stg2 clutch kit...etc. etc... basically sounds good now but im scared to change the exhaust from the stock dx exhaust, i got a customized harley muffler is the only mod to the exhaust. sounds mean but hows it sound with a headerback?
I would say best thing you can do with that cam is get headerback exhaust. It was fairly loud with headerback. you will notice huge gains with a freer flowing exhaust. It will really help your motor breath. sounds like you have a good amount of mods tho. im boosting my car now so thats a whole new game. kinda wish i stuck to all motor but boost will be so fun. goodluck with your build
@catfisher10100 well the head wasnt that expensive and i got it all as a package deal with the cam already in it. if you search around for parts you could prolly convert an lx to vtec and do the cam swap for less than 700
@dcvingeklipz99 i picked it up on ebay for 150 but brand new its around 250. ive never seen another one like it. its the k&n 57i and as you can see the filter on it is massive
@aznrice402 b18 does not really swap into 01-05 civics. the last year of the b18 was 2001 and is not really legal to swap an older motor in. you owuld have to make all new custom mounts and im not fabricator. kseries is way better anyways. I'm not going k tho. I've got a crazy turbo setup in the works. engine mods are a gateway drug
@slowep6 no numbers yet for my specific car. a guy with the same car/mods made 124.5whp without a ported head. with the ported head who knows what im makin. im going to dyno in the summer once i get stage 2 clutch, fidanza flywheel, d16 intake mani, and bored throttlebody on
@HansyPants184 ya theres no way hes getting 124.5 "whp" because it comes stock with 127. he said he has all this stuff done to the new head. i have the same car, and it sounds the same as mine, its stock.
@lilrak72 127 is at the flywheel, not the wheels. Alot of guys on that forum jamis33 is talking about (I go on it too!) say stock at the wheels an A2 puts down about 110ish HP. The A2 also has a slightly higher compression ratio (9.9:1 to 9.5:1 on the A1, which jamis33 is using), which gives that number a little more worth, too.
@slowep6 i doubt it. Maybe with a stage one supercharger. The d17 is a great reliable fuel saver motor but it was never intended to handle more power. The crankshaft and transmission cant handle more power than the car is made with so tuning and bolt ons are pointless
@ElPicheGringo it actually wasnt that hard. just get the haynes manual and its pretty straight forward. the bolts on my intake mani were really screwed up so it took a lot of work to get them off. and the timing is tricky at first but really after that you're all good. you need to find a way to control the vtec. i used afc neo which is far from perfect but it works. this swap is completely worth it in my opinion. prepare to spend around $500 to do this swap
ok thanks for the insight i might be doing this just not sure if im going to keep my car once its payed off, might buy a gti or an evo and toy around with one of those for a couple years lol
no idea on emissions to be honest. im assuming it doenst since you arent adjusting your fuel trims at all and its straight plug n play. also if it really throws them off that bad installing the cam is not too hard at all. but i plan on attempting to pass emissions this year with that cam. i think as long as your cat is good then ur fine.
one guy dyno'd his car with a2 head on lx block with i/h/e and no cat and made around 125 with stock ecu and everything. i figure my car should make a bit more with the pnp head and my vtec kicking in at 3600. with headers my car is pretty quick
trust me its far from stock. it might sound stock because of stock header with cat. just put on race header yesterday and it sounds completely different. also the car has a lot more power now. stage 1 cam is fairly mild so its fine on stock tune and the car idles fairly well. Port n polish helps too. I do notice the slightest amount of lope when its really cold out.
How much did this cost you man? I'm assuming you did it yourself? Sounds good, one mod I've really been wanting to do and I've heard you can get great results with the apexi afc neo
