FINALLY! I had the misfortune of seeing RTF in Miami. Aside for shitty sound (leave to the house sound guy to think, "more woofer...yes!" to fuck the sound up. Chick could barely be heard over that. How Chick ever put up with a tours worth of the chromatically ascending fast picking 4-finger on one string lame lick over and over and over from Al Di..... It was tough enough hearing it for 1+hours (for us)!!!! Well, Herrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre's FRANK! What a good replacement decision.
Frank pretty much shatters the theory that you have to have long fingers in order to be a hot guitarist - those are some fat sausages! And he holds the pick like a caveman club, but it doesn't stop him, because it's all soul and technique.
Yeah, so true. My longest finger is 3 inches or so, so when I started playing guitar I thought some things would just be impossible, but now I could play string skipping licks by Paul Gilbert on the 5th fret instead of the 12th. It's amazing what fingers can do.
That what you call 'caveman club grab' is actually THE way to hold a pick if everything is considered. It's the only way to play ALL music styles (except classical I suppose) with the most ease and to have all momentum centered around the pick instead of having to deal with lose fingers that only function as annoying counter-weights when you don't tuck them in. Almost all great pickers use it and that's no coincidence (Al DiMeola, McLaughlin, Lagrene, Shawn Lane, etc.).
@shpilk Would prob. never happen.. as chick doesnt allow any drinkin (at all, as far as i understand). And allan is known for being a big beer man. so
Does anyone own Frank's signature model? How much does his Carvin guitar model weigh? I own a Carvin CT6 and it's a freaking brick house. It's a double cutaway, but it has a very heavy/ thick semi-les paul quality about it.
Frank Gambale is to sweep picking what EVH is to tapping, what YJM is to neo classical and what Hendrix is to feedback/controlled noise. If you like Frank's technique, you should check out George Bellas. He utilizes a lot of Frank's sweep techniques masterfully in a neo-classical style. Quite excellent.
To bad Al di Meola couldn't make it . I don't what happens I heard some stories but whatever, is not my business. I like Frank I saw the electric band in 1987 in Brazil it was a wonderful tour! I'd like to see how have worked with Scott Henderson, he still my favorite. But Anyways I'm a Chic Corea huge fan since the 70's it was part of my influence, and just hear them playing this Return to forever repertoire is more them a Blast! If anyone likes Brazilian music please visit and sub. my channel
FRANK GAMBALE is God's gift to the guitar.....if you don't agree your opinion doesn't matter because that would mean you know nothing substantial about GUITAR!
I have only one word for Frank Gambale: Groovykickassfusionisticmusicalawesomeness!
I am so jaleous of the way he controls his guitar. Eventhough I have been playing for about 27 years, I feel like a beginner next to him. Good thing to know that there is always new techniques to learn and that there is always a next step to ones abilities...

Fully agree with Mr. Chick Corea: Mr. Frank Gambale is one of the best guitarists on the planet. A brilliant musical mind who absolutely belongs in this super-group.
Sweep clean. Make it neat and tidy.

His guitars get more and more recessed each time. The fretboard and pickups almost look fake they're so streamlined.
