@Greya77 The original theme is by Henry Purcell, an English musician and composer from the 17th century. Mr. Britten took it and made this wonderful piece for young people, to get to know the instruments of the orchestra.
@TheShadowreaper72 "Holy freaking crap this sucks." Well, you see, this is music for intelligent people. It sounds as if you might be more comfortable with gangsta rap.
This is an amazing orchestra. The shifting of the major to a minor scale and then back to a major , is done very smoothly, which plays with my emotions. I love how the instruments play back and forth, like a question and answer, or repeating. It gives this piece a lot of personality. Well conducted.
@j3551ca86 Yes the different colored shirts allow students and individuals still learning the orchestra and its elements, to have a great visual aid. The conductor's facial expressions as he is conducting is very well synchronized with how the music should be played. He goes from a sad sort of calm look to a very enthusiastic and excited expression, which signals to the orchestra how they should play (7:50). I really like that the strings are assembled on either side.
where's the rest!!! I want more :) These two videos are extremely helpful in learning the sounds of the instruments... Now we need the videos with the harp, french horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba and the conclusion of the piece.
Great video! How I can get the last part? Do you know if this video is available on DVD? I have not found it on the web (only Simon Rattle's audio cd…). Many thanks. Best regards from Italy
@samfrazier5000 By academics I assume you mean teachers, and no, they are not the only ones who like it. I am a college student, was asked to listen to this for my music appreciation class, and I really like it!
@elainebmack Check out the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, ande the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra. Or google "rattle infantil" You'll see many Afro-Venezuelans. We need a lot more representation in the orchestras including Latinos.
This is an awesome video... i'm organizing a workshop for appreciation of orchestral instruments and i want to show this to the class. Can someone teach me how to download this video to pc without having to view it online? thanks
i had to watch this for a music class i'm taking. if you are watching this from a teacher's point of view and want to show your class, please don't. sure, it's a great musical piece, but children learn nothing from watching professionals play these elaborate pieces. it only makes them feel like they aren't as good at what they play. you should stop wasting time, and actually teach them how to play an instrument.
@broncoempire62 I disagree wholeheartedly. All of us- children included- can learn lots from watching professionals play music well. I don't even know what more to say... I don't even want to know where I would be today as a musician if I wasn't able to listen to great music while simultaneously learning to play myself.
then please explain to me how you could possibly learn anything from watching this? all i see are professional musicians playing a piece they have probably practiced for months. after watching this video, what did you come away with? please enlighten me. hands on is the best way to learn any skill. you have to practice yourself, and keep trying when you mess up. just watching complicated pieces and listening to them can only help you hear what is all out there, not learn how to play anything.
I'm not trying to say that you will learn how to play like a professional orchestra musician by watching them play, or even that you can learn anything from this specific video. What I am saying is that being a musician is much more involved than simply acquiring a skill. You develop musicianship over time (ideas about what sounds good and what doesn't, about phrasing and tone and communication) by interacting with music in many different ways: listening, playing, experimenting...
@broncoempire62 This piece is not to show you HOW to play. The piece is meant for really young children. It is to introduce them to the instrument itself... Not how you should perform or to show off. It is strictly meant to give each section/instrument a chance to shine...
excellent idea to make them wear different coloured shirts for easy identification of section! Anyone know what orchestra this is, I know it's probably not Berlin due to the trumpets not using rotary horns...
@katedecampos97 Sorry, just a little light-hearted joke. I never really encounter this problem because I don't read YouTube comments, they make me very annoyed xD.
@kotetsu131 A C extension is a mechanical device attached to the lowest string on the bass(E below the bass staff). It essentially allows the player to lengthen his E string slightly to obtain the pitches from the low E down to the low C(an octave below the cello's lowest string).
I'm an elementary music teacher teaching the instrument families. Great filming to show each instrument - also love the color coding. Want to show it to my class. Any reason why the rest was taken off of youtube?
"norimitsu" Sie haben ein ganz trauriges Leben, wenn dies das erste Mal, funny ja sowieso das ist ein erstaunliches Stück i durchzuführen, um es für das Tuning finden infact ich es für sehr sinnvoll, wenn die Saiten in den ersten 20-25 Bars sondern in sagen, dass Trompeten sind auf besondere Art gut an dieser Stelle
Very nice .. I like this piece because it is great for my 11 year old - allegro and legato and features pretty much all of the musical instruments so she can hear them not only simultaneously but individually as well. Great to teach music appreciation to kids.
