Wow. Just Wow. I love the sound of Merlin engines (watched Bob Hoover's aerobatic performances while growing up in Southern CA). Found out years later that my Dad made parts for Hoover's P-51 BY HAND between his other work at North American Aviation. Again...Wow.

I wish I could remember the book I read it in, but a German Luftwaffe ace was interviewed after the war and said that shooting down allied bombers was fairly easy. Then one morning his flight was climbing to intercept a bomber formation and spotted a lot of "small dots" above the "big dots". When he realized that the little dots were fighter escorts (P-51s) he knew the war was lost.

@ad356 - I am familiar with the B-17. 1200 of those heavy bombers flew over my hometown of Dresden in 1945 and turned it and most of the 1,200,000 civilian inhabitants into ashes. I guess it was FDR's way to impress uncle Joe Stalin.

At any rate, to suggest the P-51 saved America is just ludicrous. Germany was as much a threat to America in the 1940's as Iraq was to America in 2003. These wars are fought to enrich the War Merchant- Arms Dealer class. Only the COVER story changes.

Funny considering it was based on the Supermarine Spitfire a british plane originally developed in the 1920s. It even had the same basic engine though upgraded and more powerful. Took a load out to the flight line a few days before an airshow at our base and in the line of F15's, someone had parked their P-51. Never seen one up close until that point. Yes. At 1:28 you see a P-51C. It's "Betty Jane" owned by the Collings foundation. It's the only Dual control C model flying. Some "War Weary" C models were modified to dual controls to train replacement pilots. It's a beautiful aircraft!!

Yes - it is a P-51C. I talked to Fighter Ace Bud Anderson (16.25 victories) and he preferred his "C" model with a "Malcolm hood" (bubbled canopy) the the "D" model with the full "bubble canopy".

Bud said that the Malcolm hood yielded better viability to the when looking to the rear.

It's actually a high tail "D", which seem to be popular among dual control Mustangs which have longer canopies and need the extra stability. I thought they were 'H' models at first too, but 'H models have very small wheels. There's another one at 1:43. I saw about 6 of them at the GML.

These "high tail" 51's are referred to as Cavalier conversions: meant to be two seat, mostly fully instrumented in the back seat, with the same width in that seat as the front. I flew in Crazy Horse 2 in 2006, and was there @ GML 2007.

All Mustang's came from the Good ole U.S. of A. The British designed Rolls Royce Merlin was built under license by Packard, and gave the Mustang high altitude capabilities. The P-51 "Apache" was renamed "Mustang" by the Brits and the name stuck. P-51A "Polar Bear" was also at the Gathering.

yep, the mustang had a superior rate of speed, and tirn, it can out run and out tirn about any fighter, only the me262 can out run it, but i dont know if there is any plane that can out tirn it. wow i like the 51 part that takes practice

That is the sound of freedom...My father was a P51 ace fighter pilot stationed in the Philippines. And believe in its day....it was one bad ass machine capable of going completely vertical if need be.....Germany did not stand a chance in the skies once they were introduced....
