  • I do agree with you and it now lloks ominous that MV Saturn (newest and last of the streakers!) is out of service and is lying at Roseneath where Juno was broken up.

I believe what has is happening goes under the name of PROGRESS!

  • I,m amazed no one wanted the 2 ships, every other clyde ship has went on to pastures new.I would rather they gave them away than scrap them.

  • As this contract is only for six year and the SNP nationalist government could perceivably be defeated , may be Calmac will make a comeback on the vehicle side of it... be positive. Didn't Calmac make an offer for the 'Clyde Clipper'? , I've been on her recently and she is undoubtably better than the Ali Cat.

  • Ther is no longer a subsidy available for providing a vehicle carrying service.

  • is this all down to saving money

  • Beautifully executed and most restrained, moving little film. I've put a link on my Facebook. Very angry about the squalid demise of these fine, perfectly designed Clydebuilt ships.

  • @johnnycrofter Thank you for your very kind comment on my film which had to be put together more quickly than I would have liked.

I share your feeling on their loss more so when seeing what they have been replaced by.

It is to be hoped that the "Argyll Flyer" will soften the shock a little when she finally makes her debut!

  • @williambraid I doubt it, I'm afraid; ALI CAT and ARGYLL FLYER seem little more than Tupperware-hulled sewing-machines. When cruising on the WAVERLEY the other day I saw Clyde Marine's CLYDE CLIPPER doing the Gourock-Dunoon run until ARGYLL FLYER is ready - ironic; as Clyde Marine lost out on the contract - and at least their much-superior vessels, steel-hulled and with funnels and so on, actually qualify as ships.

  • I think the MacBrayne car ferry will be greatly missed. This is an important video because it shows the last days of a part of Clyde river transport.

I had the same idea but my footage is not as good or detailed as yours.

  • @clydevideo Thanks for your kind comment. I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to cover this sad event so it became a bit of a compromise. The shots at Rosneath had to be taken from a considerable distance plus permission to get into the breakers' yard was categorically refused----good excuse to upgrade my camera and add a decent telephoto lens--I wish!!

    I enjoy your postings.

    Regards

    Bill.

  • Nope, I was wrong DERFA and CMAL got there way with Jupiter,

She indeed has been sold to the Grenaa shipbreakers,

CMAL need respect for there boats as they lied to me about Jupiter, we shouldn't let Saturn and the other Calmac boats reaching the end of there days be "recycled" or should I say scrapped.

  • Nope, I was wrong,

CMAL and there silly DERFA plan got Jupiter, she has indeed been sold to the Grenaa ship breakers, by the looks of things, Saturn will follow being recycled and then other Calmac ships at the end of there time, I am setting up a petition to defeat DERFA and save ex Calmac boats!

  • Thanks for that information--most interesting.

I would hope that perhaps she is going to enter a new life in contrast to her younger sister.

  • Jupiter was towed from Rosneath on the 25th June 2011, it appears her destination is Grenaa, although there is a ship breakers there it appears they specialise in old fishing/support vessels and not ferries, incidently the company that owns Luna A (the tug towing her) owns old Swedish car ferries converted into diving support vessels, this may be her future.
