From what I've read, Munchkin cats have a similar gene to the one in Dachshunds and Corgis. But unlike the doggies, Munchkin cats don't have spinal issues, and they're remarkably healthy. I've heard that their legs aren't as good with shock absorption, but if you're careful, and don't let them jump off the fridge, they'll probably be OK.

That being said, people should really adopt, rather than buy. There are thousands of wonderful, unique kitties available at the shelter who need homes.

againstvalentine i agree with you 100%, for a matter of fact, i just watched a program that stated that the gene that gives the munchkin cats the short legs is similar to the one that gives dokies, basset and courgys there short legs, they can have some health problems but thats only due to irresponsible breeders. they can have a problem, any animal can. I think the Munchkin cats are the cutest things i think i have ever seen.

Try doing some research before you post on here and look like a fool. Munchkin cats are just as healthy as any other cat and are not prone to any diseases more so than any other cat. Hardly the same gene, and while we are on the subject of whether the Munchkins are good or bad, there is still sufficient doubt to make a number of breeding associations and veterinary practices treat the breed as suffering from achondroplasia. The odd thing is, this very condition (or a variant) gives Corgis and Weiners their own stunted legs, though munchkins do not seem to suffer the same back issues which canine short-leg breeds have.

@againstvalentine What I think flkandrea is mistaken about is the difference between a Munchkin and a Squitten (twisty) cat. While Munchkins are basically a dwarf cat, a Squitten is deliberately bred for its mutated and malformed forelegs. Where a Munchkin can run and jump like a normal cat, a Squitten must adapt to life with little or no use of its' front legs at all, and that, I think, is very cruel.
