if the battle was in 197 bc, i do not understand why i see legionary cohorts that are post-marian units in rome total war when the marian reforms were in 107 bc.

@oxis77gas theirs a setting to give you a bigger army number its Unit Scale at the video settings. im not sure if thiers a mod for bigger numbers tho but i advice you not cause it will lag alot! plus just make alot of Regiments you can have a huge looking army

@saberslash127 Maximum vanilla setings are 160/240 men in one unit. I have enought strong pc for this old game , even bf3 work and run on 40-55 fps.

This looks nothing like the armies would have looked. Romans weren't equipped with such obvious Augustean equipment. They didn't even fully adopt the Roman red, most were just dully dyed with more Etruscan style helmets.

The Macedonian army under Phillip V had a reformed style of pike phalanx, with slightly shorter spears for greater flexibility and stronger armor to rebuff the Roman gladius. The Macedonians had superior cavalry, but Romans had flexible infantry counter attacks and elephants.

I Disagree with most of opinions here. There is no Best formation,bot maniples and Phalanxes system were Awesome and effective,but all nedd much support to hold their Ground and Combined arms to win a battle.

There are those who believe that the Macedonian phalanx was not at its prime when the Romans fought it. This is incorrect because just 53 years after Alexander died his relative Pyrrhus invaded Italy and tried to conquer Rome.

Remember some facts first:

-Pyrrus was not so Genius As Alexander

-The Macedonain phalanx of Pyrrus was way more trained Than Philip One,that was most composed of militias

-Pyrrus do not won his war because he lacked Contingents,As most greeks at that time Migrated to The Seleucid And Ptolemaic lands,so If he destroyed an Roman Army,They could just send another one.

-The Phalanxes HAD Resisted on Much of Pyrrus Battles,and even at one time Pushed back the Romans.

I have a great wish to see a battle between the Legions and the phalanx played out for real with equal numbers and no variables just the phalanx and the legions on a very flat plain. Only then would the issue be put at rest. Until I see this all discussion is pointless.

I have just put my oppinion there,and not Challenged you, So Please,first at all,Respect. Second,it simply sounds stupid to put A Phalanx against A Cohort with no Reinforcements because this would never happen on the reality. Third,People Have Enthusiasm for History because its Interesting,And a lot entertaining to think how the world was in past. Fourth: Before blaming me,You should learn more History and Military History and read some books before telling that i dont think.

At this point in history Rome was a young nation and the legionary method of fighting was yet to be perfected. (Marian reforms)

At the first battle at Heraclea, the Roman Legion, to the shock of Pyrrhus was holding, it's own against the mighty Macedonian Phalanx. The battle was only won because he ordered for his elephants to charge the Romans. The Romans who had never seen an elephant before, panicked and the legion broke formation. Pyrrhus's losses was almost as heavy as the Romans.

He also defeated them at Asculum but his losses was so heavy that he was noted for saying:

" One more such victory will undo me!"

In 275 hefought the Romans again with even less success than before. After this final battle he left Italy for good

This proves how bad the phalanx can be in battle against a better army.

Call my bluff, argue with me if you want, the Legion woops the Phalanx.

Even Alexander the Great wouldn't be able to stand against the Romans now, Legion------------->Phalanx.

My argument? Rome conquered the world (conquered the phalanx, yes the phalanx conquered the world too but did it beat Rome? No.)

The Roman Legion is much superior to the Greek/Macedonian Phalanx. One of the greatest advantages of the Roman Legion over its opponents is its command structure where its local commanders are given the authority and flexibility to change tactics and strategy to adapt to the changing conditions of the battlefield.

I agree too that a Roman Legion will crush Alexander of Macedon and his phalanx in a pitch battle.

Pydna was lost by a Foolish Action by perseus,which costed his entire army,

Magnesia would have been A Roman Defeat,but Thanks for a Lack of communication from such a big Army,and A stupid Withdrawaw from Antiochus III After breaking an Entire Maniple in a Cavalry charge,The Seleucids Lost Hard.

@eduds6 I find it strange that so many people can excite themselves about things that happened so long ago. It is my personal stance that the Roman legion was overall better than the phalanxes. Anyone can write anything on YouTube but there is only one way by which we can prove or disprove our differing points of view and that is by pitting a Roman Legion against the phalanx . Equal numbers and no cavalry or archers. What about it people? why not take it to another level?

@29gmj it's obvious that u r not aware of the full scale of the story.in all the previous battles u mentioned phalanx did not lose because of its disadvantages but because of erred decisions or because of the loss of coherence of the phalanx which the romans legions took advantage of.where was the so called ''mobility'' of the roman legion in the battle of carrhae,or in the battle of cannes against hannibal?they were surrounded and slaugthered by the parthians and the carthaginians.

@29gmj let me remind you that the greek phalanx had encountered and won those rivals from where the romans suffered bitter defeats.antiochus III was named antiochus the great because he destroyed the parthians.romans never fully capitulated parthians.and in the past a lot of times greek phalanx were succesfull against carthaginian armies.so it was not the fact that legion was better than the phalanx.it's that the phalanx in order to perform needed to maintain its coherence.

@29gmj in the battles of cynoscephalae phalanx broke because of terrain disabilities.so with it's coherence lost it was easy for the roman legions to get through the gaps and win.before that maneuver romans faced loss.they couldnt find a way to penetrate the phalanx.u can't just say 'legion is better that the phalanx' because u won a few battles.phalanx won enemies that made legions bleed and suffer bitter defeats.parthians and carthaginians.if legion was a better combat system it would prevail.

Depends...One on one the Legion wins all the way. The biggest reason Macedon lost is they went pure Phalanx army and failed to bring in at cavalry an combined types of troops like Alexander would. The Phananx needed calvary to commit a sucessful hammer and anvil and flank security.

Romans lost to Parthia only at Cahrae its the same reason why Macedon lost. No combined arms. They had almost all Legions and no archers and little calvary. They latter defeated Parthia when the adopted combined arms

Read books about Hellenic history(Bengston,Hammond,Sir Runciman etc,), and you'll learn if the macedons were greek-speaking people(Hellenic people) Flaminius & his italic barbarians,knew very well that destroying the most powerful greek state/reign(macedonia), the concouest of the wicked confederations in southcentral greece would become easier.So,by keeping the greeks divided,with political & military victories they finally put all greeks in slavery,till 146 B.C....
