  • that thing needs a weed wacker motor and a prop muahahaha

  • They need to put a small jet engine in there

  • Maybe the pilot can wear a helmet that works like a rudder, like on rocketeer.

  • I'm serious, is it possible to purchase this craft or others of it's kind?

  • It should be noted that while Mowe/Mehve is a glider, she is also powered by a jet propulsion system for takeoffs, boosting thrusts to keep airspeed up and for vertical landings, alot more complex than "just a glider" though she rides the wind rather than cuts through it.

This is absolutely brilliant, and that they are designing an engine for it is even cooler, I'd love it if someday we see a remake of the original but this comes close eneogh.

  • @Shatteredragon ... and it can also run continuously for long distance high speed cross/inter-country travel, as seen in both the manga and the anime. When the engine breaks down, Nausicaa and Asbel are temporarily stranded. The machine does have some gliding ability, but it's more like a microlight with a very shallow glidepath than a true glider - which, in canon, are much lighter, willowy items, such as the near-kites valley children are seen training on in the film credits.

  • @TahreyUK Lol oh I know, I've been a Nausicaa fan since I was six, my first experience with anime, I've seen the fan sub of the original, the Disney dub and sub, the butchered Warriors of the Wind version (all told, somewhere around 200 times), and I own both front to back and back to front versions of the manga (read a few dozen times), it has always been my favorite even after having watched and read so many anime and manga that you'd think I'd have replaced it by now. Manga is newer to me.

  • @MvuaNdege, actually, fbRXSE7EN is correct. Gliding is un-powered FLIGHT. In fact all aircraft can glide, some much better than others. Making an UN-powered aircraft/ glider fly is the oldest method of proving a concept. Gliders can and do FLY on WINDLESS days! What is "some other force"?! Flight/Flying/Gliding is SCIENCE not MAGIC. LMAO. Aircraft/gliders will fly as long as the air flowing over the wing(s) is moving fast enough to produce LIFT. READ A BOOK. Learn something.

  • for it to look fully like the one from the manga, what we need is a combination of powerful thruster and portable source of unlimited energy. Perhaps we can borrow one from Tony Stark. All the jokings aside, that thing looks way bigger and bulkier than the elegant one from the manga.

  • @kkksskkk Unfortunately, we cannot bend the laws of physics, and computer modelling shows that something with a similar wingspan to what Miyazaki drew couldn't actually support it's own weight in the air. At least, not with current materials - making it light enough would also lead to it falling apart, especially if you wanted to carry a rider.

But getting this close is pretty cool in itself.

  • @TahreyUK I don't know, I don't have much knowledge in aerodynamics, but if the thing had better thrusters, wouldn't it be able to create a lift large enough to support itself? It would have to fly pretty fast, but still. I do think it will become very unstable, but I mean, F117 flies pretty good doesn't it?

  • @kkksskkk Good thoughts, but unfortunately I have to rebut :-(

    1. Higher speed should indeed = OK with shorter wings. But it then means you cant get lift at (fast-)running pace, which is kind of essential for the authenticity/usefulness/safety of such a craft.

    2. F117 had flight control computers out the wazoo, and despite its weird shape (and "wobbly goblin" name) STILL isn't as inherently unstable as some other fighters. You can limp home with a damaged flight control unit and a steady hand.

  • @kkksskkk (because they put a lot of effort into the design of the thing to be near-invisible to radar but STILL flyable ... unlike something like the F29 which would literally fall out of the sky without the automatically-adjusted canards. This glider is a realisation of a sketch out of a graphic novel, with just enough tweaking to the original, by amateurs (committed, clever ones, but still amateurs) to get it airborne for ~10 seconds at a time)

  • Hopefully they get it up and running fully soon that would be a great way to travel.I wonder if anyone else is making other crafts from Miyazaki??

  • Beautiful model of Mehve. Didn't it have some sort of propulsion from the body cavity in the manga, though?

  • when is that avalible to americans

  • kinda cool but why?

  • Um why is it attached to a string, does it not really fly? :(

  • @HOTPocketDestroyer Not as of yet, I don't think. Still in prototype stages. But they're working on it.

  • I hope they can really make it work, that would be so cool !! and maybe they could somehow make it eco friendly :) <3

  • if it couldn't fly, it would NOT have lifted into the air. read a book. u just might learn something. Anyhoo... Its bad ass!!!

    Love Nausicaa!!!

  • im not stupid.

Ok I thought that it might have pulled along by a rope at first like a kite would be pulled

  • @fbRXSE7EN Actually, that would be gliding. Not flying. That's why it's called a "glider". Flight is self-propelled, a glider needs wind or some other force to remain airborne. (An airplane/helicopter has engines/blades, a glider does not.) Still awesome, though.

  • @HOTPocketDestroyer

It's a glider right now, but they're going to put a jet engne in the body cavity. :)

  • @skyseeker901 Awesome!! :D

  • Get me a crash helmet and I'll test pilot it when they get the Engine on it!

  • Awesome

  • That thing is freeking stable, it has no tailplane, and negative dihedral!

  • Throw a jet engine in the fuselage and fly it for real, what are you awaiting for?!

  • Do you know how much those cost!!!!!

  • Lol, Was gonna say that myself.

  • I love Nausicca: Of The Valley Of The Wind and I'd love to have this thing as a luxury!

My boy... I am having a hard time mailing this movie back to Netflix as I've watched this movie about 3 times last week, including yesterday and tonight! The child that made that "la" singing in "Interchange with the Ohmu" gets in my mind all the time and made me came back to that movie! I really enjoyed her looks in the title menu of the DVD and this made me stare at her after the end credits.

  • For that reason, I will never forget that movie in my memory due to my strong affection with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Ohmu is one of my favorite, too! Ah-ha-ha ha! :D I'm gonna have to buy this movie and return the movie to Netflix.

So anyway, I really love the movie and the mehve.

  • original manga(by hayao miyazaki) is also nice. i really recommend it.

  • it's not only nice, it's pretty much the best manga I ever read.

    A must-read!

  • You're right. Better than the movie, better than any other manga.

  • What's wrong with a good old hang glider?

  • not enough JET ENGINE

  • 神

  • japanese have invented faster cars then europeans piece of shit 2tonnes cars!!!

  • Oh shut up

  • You have just proved my point!

  • In your weird reality maybe.. I don't see how

  • wow, that's not even cynicism. that's just narrow-mindedness.

  • The movie was MADE by the Japanese. So you're arguing that they stole the idea...from themselves?

  • the movie was Japanese

so technically your stating they stole.. from themselves??? i fail to see your logic

  • no wheels please

  • how do you intend to land without them?

  • with the indestructible and smooth bottom of course!!!

  • You'd bounce O.o it would hurt... a lot.

  • imagine a smooth landing

  • that would be so diesel

  • looks like fun to fly that thing §

  • i tell ya if i had alot of money...

  • I love the Japanese, 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' is an excellent movie and I've been hoping someone would build a real glider/jet version of the one in the movie!

    Woot! Props to the Japs!

  • u love japanese but you call them jap. im confused.

  • @bottomOFair I'm confused as well. Is "jap" supposed to be some kind of racial slur? I thought it was an acronym for "japanese". Like "kor" for "korean". What's wrong with jap?

  • It's proof of a concept. They will add more stuff to it later.

  • Is this a proof of concept vehicle or are they just demonstrating unpowered glide properties? The kindest thing I can say about this aircraft is that it appears to be an unfinished design.

  • A mini jet should go in the center with wing controls at the top with the pilot. Now that would be cool.

  • The rails need to be taller. D: The point isn't to box the rider in, it's to be able to give them support when they stand to bring the mehve to a stop.

  • That's pretty darn cool!

  • Thats so cool!

  • How the hell is he controlling that thing? I don't see a control stick or any other controls?!

  • Same way you do with a hang glider. Shifting your body and moving the CG of the aircraft.

  • Fuck that for a joke. At least on a hang-glider you have a bar in front of you that helps. What a death machine lol

  • not gonna happen,,too fast,,and some yahoo is going to stall it,,,causing a tumble,,and the widow will clean out the bank on this design.

  • love the helmet :P

  • Mehve was a jet powered Glider that combines a glider with elements of a surf-board. In other words you rode it liek a surfboard on the wind with powered assistance.

  • 2010, a new vehicle. the MEHLVE!!!

Availble for a low price, you can use it to go to school, but it will get stolen easily but's heavy as hell!

  • That thing is awesome.

  • From what I have heard they are going to add an engine soon. Does anyone know where they are in Japan, because I am there now and want to see the Mehve up close.

  • I wanna see u jump of a cliff with that and glide around. : D
