I was at this race, one of about 10 Belmont Stakes that I have attended. Point Given coming around the turn into the stretch was a sight to behold. One of the most remarkable horses I have ever seen.
Funny I remember Secretariat, Riva Ridge, Foolish Pleasure, Cigar, Spectacular Bid like it was yesterday but now I'm reminded of how great Point Given was. What a powerful stretch run.
@cf1970 Durkin is THE best caller in the business, he and Dave Johnson. Most track announcers sound like auctioneers. There really aren't that many good ones. Announcing is one of the bad sides of the sport.
Gary Stevens did a piece today where he visted Point Given....and appoligized to him for screwing up.....running too fast in the derby. He was in tears doing it.....was a very touching moment. IF any horse was going to win the triple crown for the past 15 years, it was point given. Truly a shame injury cut his career short.
Point Given and Afleet Alex are two of the better three year olds in the last ten years. It is still mystifying to me that OPointGiven did not win the Triple Crown. He was an absolutely huge horse. A total freak of nature,. In the derby I think Stevens did not run a very good race. But Monarcos ran one of the fastest derby's ever. Great horse here though.
I believe NYRA aimed for got a better deal by breaking with NBC and going with ABC/ESPN for 2006 and afterward. Before then, the networks had bid on the Crown as a single package. For years, CBS had all three legs, until ABC plucked off the Derby in 1975 and then the Preakness later. CBS held onto the Belmont until the switch to ABC in 1986.
I never noticed before but he messed up the final time. Apparently this was the first Belmont to ever be run under 2 minutes lol.
You can definitely see that Baffert and the rest of Point Given's connections were bittersweet about this race. Sure, it's great to win the Belmont, but it was just an exclamation point on what could have been.
I met Gary Stevens 2 years ago and asked him what happened to Point Given in the Derby. He said they sealed the track the night before and that it was very hard on Saturday. Gary said he new Point Given would not like it. He said when he felt the track at Pimlico on Preakness Day he new no one could beat him. Point Given followed closely by Rock Hard Ten were the 2 best horses he said he rode.
One of the great questions that people will ask when looking back on this decade of horse racing will be what happened to Point Given on the first saturday in May. He was so convincing in his other victories, and yet he did nothing in the Derby. One of the several this decade to get 2/3 of the triple crown and arguably one of the most talented of that group.

Announcer says the final time was one minute and twenty six seconds... That would surely be a world record... Lol....

The greatest race I've ever seen. I wasn't around for Secretariat or Affirmed, but Point Given was an absolute machine. The Big Red Train.

Point Given was the best horse since Sunday Silence and Easy Goer after Secretariat and Seatle Slew. Shouldve won the Triple.

he lost the derby because he was too close to that blistering pace. every horse close songandaprayer was COOKED at the top of the stretch.

Congaree must have missed the memo. ;-)

@ericadelahunty Yep. And the track was SUPER FAST that day. Gary knew he blew it and has always been profusely sorry for that.

is it my imagination or was there a guy walking on the track at the start, right in harms way.
ahsans786 3 years ago
That would be the starter. That's a pretty standard position for him to be in.

Crushing win--you said it. That was a beast run, and I honestly don't think he was even going flat out.
