It's so sad how someone so great could turn so evil. :'-(.

It's the PERFECT combination, though. He craves the POWER to SAVE a LIFE of someone he LOVES, which shows that he doesn't just want strength, but the strength to do good. He falls to the Dark side in order to do something for the Light, but gets consumed into the Dark side's emotional fury in the process; which is actually a clue that he does turn back to the Light in the end, because he shows signs of having Good in him.
