0.o No. Just. No. That is some of the worst technique I have seen. And the timing. *barfs* If you are going to hold 4 mallets, please use all of them, not just 2 of them.
Yeah, I don't get the snarkiness about this. I studied percussion in college, and I could spot a few technical flaws, sure. But her intent here is to be flashy and entertaining for a mass audience. She's not playing for a conservatory professor -- she's playing for a pageant crowd. By that standard, she does quite well.
Eh, it's pretty poorly played for being considered a "talent", but it's not hilarious. She's got poor technique, dirty rolls, etc., but this isn't apparent to the untrained eye.
sorry but that is most definitely a marimba i play percussion mainly mallet instruments not only is a marimba way bigger than a xylophone it also has a lower tone it's the lower end of the sound spectrum totally different sound.....obviously you never seriously studied musical instruments.....
@Dave2Jenkins u can't see what's wrong with that, then ill tell u. Instead of showing off her 'awesome' 'skills' she should just practice more, and also smilling while looking at the audience doesn't make your accuracy any better :P
@Dave2Jenkins Here is my suggestion. Play this video for your marimba professor. If THEY don't think there is any problem with this performance, enroll in another school! Quickly!! Immediately!!! Seriously!!!!
@123ijijij i have been playing music for more than half of my life. i can honestly say i believe i have a "trained ear." you don't need a trained ear, however, to realize that this is indeed not that funny. musically, i would call it mediocre to average, leaning more towards average. but yeah this isn't a lollercaust it's pretty lame actually.
She didn't learn to play like that overnight.....it took serious practice, and if you ever practiced an instrument, you can empathize. She is fantastic!!!!!
@quantumdave - Actually, Wintersbach does have a bit of a point there. Think about how hard she had to work just to memorize and get playable (as well as she was able to do) 2:30 min. worth of music. (My primary instrument is percussion.)
@benjaminmullin96 - If you're STILL saying that, you did not get the point I just got through explaining to you quite clearly. I'll reiterate, this time in big capital letters: I'D BE WILLING TO BET YOU SHE WORKED HER BUTT OFF JUST TO GET IT SOUNDING AS GOOD AS IT DID RIGHT HERE WHILE UNDER THE SCRUTINIZING EYES OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE! How about that? Simple enough language for ya? Good bye.
I love her swung 8th notes. And her technique is so flawless too! And I like that her left hand is a lit slower than her right hand causing an unevenness that really just adds so much stylistic flair to the piece!
wow... I can't even vote on this one way or the other. Her technique, accuracy, roll speeds, and choice of mallets are all just horrible (thumbs down)... however, this is a great example of how NOT to play a marimba for a disgustingly large nation-wide televised audience (thumbs up). Very rarely (VERY VERY RARELY) could I see the use of tossing mallets in the act (time constraint or comedy), and in this case, she was playing some fast circus music, which is where that clown of a woman belongs.
This was terrible and a tad bit insulting... Her 4 mallet rolling was atrocious, and lets not even mention the wrong notes(especially at the beginning and end), bad technique, and fluctuating tempo. Throwing mallets is a crime through my eyes. It is kind of funny though.
Sitar, like Marimba, has an enchanting tone that is perceived 'exotic' to western ears. Because of this, you sometimes see people with zero musical talent play these instruments because the basic 'noise' itself is modestly impressive and can compensate for the fact that they have no idea how to really play the instrument. If someone were to do the same thing with a guitar, everyone would 'get it' and laugh but on a Marimba, they don't know good from bad.
what a mockery of one of my favorite instruments!!! and to actually "pose" at the end? My director would have had the whole pit run laps for that performance??? LOL!
oh! so she is the one who does the music for Tom & Jerry cartoons, nah jk it wasn't that funny, a bit cute, yeah her expressions were funny, maybe her musical talent is not like that of a grammy winning genius but she did alright man.
If you get the humor in this you gotta check out Bob Newheart's stand-up routine where he places a phone call from the "New World" back to Europe or wherever talking about discovering coffee, tobacco, etc.
@quantumdave Indeed, i have played that song myself, and first i looked away in sorrow, then i laughed my butt off! hillarious how she just destroyed that song
I feel in a way insulted by this performance. She's practically making fun of the instrument with her absurd presentation and technique that makes me want to hit her with my goo bazooka. And she threw her mallets. Isn't that illegal unless they're targeting someone in your section?
@FlyingCarnage I believe it's illegal IF you target someone in your section. But this is immensely headache-inducing, frankly she doesn't even deserve to be Miss South Carolina :P
I can't stand how horrible her technique is! >< It's driving me insane watching it. I mean, I give her credit for giving the marimba a bit of a name outside of band nerds, but GAH! I would rather have someone who could barely play with amazing technique than vise versa!
@MrBarsty Vaguely? The marimba is a PERCUSSIVE instrument meaning impressive tempo is sorta necessary...she does not have that. Secondly, her technique is terrible. Just because she's hitting a bunch of notes doesn't mean she can even "vaguely" play
Nervous performer, for sure....she tends to rush the beat more than anything, and that makes consistency an issue. But she still deserves props for getting in front of everyone. Not a pro performance, but the piece is a challenge...good for an amateur under loads of pressure.
