Sorry to all commentors for not responding sooner, I didn't realise anyone looked at my videos!:
Murderdogs (interesting name) thanks! This stream/ditch achieves a high water level in spring that lasts well into june, and the fish don't seem to suffer. But I can't be sure.
Pebbleprominent - This water is a mixture of fresh and brackish. The ditch is located in a saltmarsh, fed by a stream and runs into a tidal lagoon. Small flatfish have been seen even quite a way up the stream.
Hi Pebbleprominent - nice name btw - this water was probably fresh but I didn't check, and it does vary with time of year and the weather patterns as it's a ditch through a saltmarsh that feeds into a delta. It was very wet last year, so the salinity was probably extremely low, if there was any. I'm glad you can see the caudal peduncle so well in this film. What do you deduce, based on what you've previously seen, regarding the original habitat of this individual?
Is this in salt water? because I have seen different forms in freshwater than seawater. In salt water the fish has a wider caudal peduncle (if you know what that is!) I have kept these fish in a tank, including a male, and I have watched the babies growing up. We made a pond in our garden for them, and they are breeding and surviving there.
Hi Vincent! It was a tidal ditch fed by a large stream. It's one of those dumping spots so the nest was built on a plank someone had thrown in. A few weeks later the tide was so low the nest was actually a metre above water!
