Seriously, I'm lovin' this hack so far! It seems to focus on reflexes, and each run is like an action movie take to get the perfect headlong-rush-scene. Or a professional runner training on an obstacle course until he can clear it. It just has juuuust enough safe spots to give some breathers to keep it from being an auto-scroll type rush.
It's unique, and really works well with this game engine as a platformer. Reactionary gameplay seems to be Raocow's strong point, and this caters to it nicely
raocow, when you say "ree-gister" is that you saying "register" (either "comically" or because that's how you think it should), or is it a completely different word?
Because one day it hit me that that is what you may be saying, and it's been bugging me since.
Thus far, it seems to me that this hack is just replacing legitimate level design and difficulty with "Oh, man! These plans shoot fireballs that are REALLY FAST and that's difficult and it's hilarious, ohoho~!" Here's hoping it improves later on, because I'm not that impressed as yet.
@TheGangstagnome So... what constitutes "legitimate difficulty" then? Because in my opinion, keeping the player on their toes is just that. This gives more reflex-based gameplay than most hacks, which is the epitome of a good platformer.
@xZaCloudx Well, that's a difficult question to answer, but for something like a Super Mario hack, I would say more legitimate difficulty would be based more around challenging platforming segments and clever enemy placement as opposed to just increasing the speed of some fireballs. It just seems lazy to me.
@TheGangstagnome But the levels are built around having to dodge those fireballs. They have limited trajectory angles, yet most of them manage to be dangerous, which shows that the level was designed with them in mind. There are just enough safe-spots to keep it from being unfair, but it takes good reflexes and reaction to find them in time. You have to balance care and speed.
Just because a gameplay mechanic is simple doesn't mean it's ineffective. Platformers can be simple.
@xZaCloudx I'm not saying simple is bad or anything like that. I just don't think this particular mechanic was the best choice, especially not for two levels in a row. The way raocow talked about learning levels and finding safe spots, it sounded like he was playing a Mega Man game, not a Mario game. The focus of Mario hacks, IMO, should be more on platforming and clever gimmicks instead of segments that are needlessly hard and frustrating. And we didn't need TWO fireball levels...
@xnamkcor no but you can do the math with how many lives I got left at the end. let's just give a small error margin for possible 'coin-brought lives' or something.
I think it's 20 deaths today, actually. It looked like your coin counter must've hit 100 at least once during all that (between 4:28 and 4:32 in the video). So, that would make your total deaths so far 43.
Only me who found the game audio to be kinda perfect? I really nice balance on the game audio and raocows voice, being able to listen to both without problem.
@SodaScarletMachine No I agree. One of the things I love about hacks is the cool music people put in the game, so being able to clearly hear both Mr Rao and the music was pretty perfect.
@SodaScarletMachine Also in total agreement here. I think this was the best balance. I always feel left out when he comments on the music, but I can only barely hear it. This would have been nice for him to keep, in my opinion.
@NightmareStation He'll probably struggle on both. I already beat the whole game and know what's coming up, and I can say that there's not one castle level in this game which is particularly 'fair'/easy.
And don't expect much from the bosses, they're barely classifiable as such.
The definite sign that I've been ruined and spoiled by youtube's lifted time restrictions- I'm disappointed whenever I see a video under 12 minutes long :(
@Stevothehuman I'm sure that was not the intent of that statement. Blocks can't pay taxes anyway because they don't get paid at their jobs. It's more along the lines of...volunteer work...except they really aren't volunteering. I'm not too sure how that works, though.
@Stevothehuman Well, in all actuality, it is mainly the rich, white people who do not pay their taxes. So the thought you should gravitate towards is that Raocow was merely telling a joke as opposed to being a racist; seeing as that is not a typical stereotype for that particular race.
@bitesh Actually I may of gotten confused, since I think it's the map screen from Castlevania X or 5, whatever you want to call it, not the password screen from Super Castlevania 4.
use save states man -.-
