Awesome martial arts skills and he's a total natural when it comes to acting! Very charismatic and engaging; it's a shame he didn't get the part, though it seems they changed the script radically since his audition and the poor reception by fans and critics isn't something I'd wish on him. it's never been stated what the characters' races are in the series, but COME ON! the ASSUMED race is asian! With all of the Asian elements incorporated in the cartoon, it's pretty hard to imagine otherwise. and it can easily be argued that Aang isn't caucasian either..

I can't stand how people can think that this kid needs acting skills when Noah Ringer had absolutely no acting experience whatsoever. After he was contracted, Shyamalan had to send him to acting seminars. In addition, Ringer was experienced in Tae Kwon Do, NOT Kung Fu like this kid is. After all the martial arts in ATLA was variations of Kung Fu. This guy would make a great Aang if given the opportunity! End of discussion.

I am appalled at the decision to go with a Caucasian as Aang. The part clearly calls for someone who is Asian and with considerable martial art abilities, which your son has. Whilst he may not be a great actor right away, children learn incredibly fast and it looked like he has a lot of potential for acting definitely knew how to play Aang with the very childish and innocent way of talking.

Just stating my opinion:

Even if Noah was a better martial artist, the choreographer chooses the speed the moves get done. So saying Perris is faster is kind of off base.

Boycotting this movie because of the race of the lead characters is a load, imo. And I just couldn't get behind it. Mainly because regardless of who plays him, Aang was NEVER Asian. NEVER.

He was an Airbender and that was it. How he looked was NEVER relevant in the story.

The fact that he can move the stick around like that, he's got very short hair(gonna have to go bald) has much experience in wushu(kung fu) and isn't too tall or short and is young makes him almost perfect for this movie. Acting skills I have no right to judge, but this kid really should have been chosen.

It sucks that Perris couldn't get this role. He would have been beyond perfect as Aang and I'm sure fans would have watched to see the movie if he was cast as Aang. The Producers and casters and director made a BIG mistake by passing him up. Now their movie is being boycotted and has been receiving a lot of backlash. For those questioning his acting skills, I'd be willing to bet money that with a professional director experienced with child actors he'd do fine. We also haven't seen Ringer's audition, but considering they gave him acting lessons (and that it hasn't been released to show us all what a superior actor he is) I doubt it was any better, and Perris definitely has him beat on martial arts.

Martial arts wise, they're both good candidates. This boy may be more talented but it's not like they will use of these abilities on screen. Choreographers make all the decisions anyway.

Acting wise, they're both need improvements. No discussion needed.

Appearance wise, here's where it gets complicated. The one who won the role is shorter and has chubbier face. He's more likely to retain the childlike look for the next two movies.

His "cold reading" of the lines is normal for an actor, especially someone his age. Few people are completely natural like Dakota Fanning (at age 7 in I am Sam and beyond). I saw a video of Julia Stiles doing a cold reading once and she was worse than this young kid. I don't think he's bad actually, I think he should've been directed to see how he responds to instruction.
