I'm a seasonal vegetarian - in summer. And in winter, I eat meat a couple times a week. I found that the less meat you eat, the less you miss it. At one point, it becomes even a bit weird, eating the flesh of another being.
I'm a vegetarian for exactly the reasons you stated there! and I completely agree that the goal is to get more people to eat less meat rather than "banning" meat altogether - great video Hank!
Interesting discussion; I didn't know the U.S. wasted so much water on meat. In Argentina, the very thought of feeding cows 'feed' as opposed to letting them graze on rain-watered grass is crazy. However, climate is super important, and Argentineans, while loving red meat more than most countries, doesn't have the U.S.'s portion-sizes. So we can either choose to eat red meat much less often or in smaller amounts or both. Wouldn't hurt our health issues, either.
@TheDrmimizu What if they eat mostly (if not entirely) grass and hay? I live on a small farm where we try to use as little grain as possible; they mostly live off of grass that is watered by rain, which would happen anyway. I do not like buying meat from people I do not know; I know that this is a little bit of a luxury. Oh jeez, now I'm sounding a bit pretentious... Sorry...
@Sashafia117 I agree with your point, and it makes sense to raise cattle in places where there can grow nothing but grass. But there are a lot of places, where you could use the space to grow vegetables/grain instead of raising cattle.
Oh god I regret watching this video so much. I've been a nerdfighter for 2 years, and dont get me wrong, I love the content that Hank and John give us all (especially John's books) but PETA isn't a good society. The things they do to the animals they take from people is horrendous. I'm vegetarian myself, but PLEASE DONT SUPPORT PETA!
I became a vegetarian last year, and it really isn't that different. Admittedly, I live on pretty much a diet of cereal regardless of whether or not I eat meat. And my mom wants me to take iron supplements. But really, I barely notice it. (though I actually am still eating fish)
Also, meat substitutes kinda gross me out, though I might be willing to try them. It's just...if it looks like meat, and smells like meat and more or less tastes like meat..but it isn't meat, then what is it??
@HeadInTheClouds1178 It's soy beans! Just very well seasoned, with a lot of salt. I wouldn't reccomend fake meat being a daily part of your diet as the sodium adds up. You should try them though, a few different brands too. I like Boca and Quorn. Also, if you miss burgers you could just make veggie burgers from regular beans.
Also I don't think that a diet is healthy if it entirely cuts out a food group. We need to cut more meat out of our diets but not all the way.. We need more plant based foods for sure.
THANK YOU!!!! Goodness! I am a vegitarian in highschool and am criticised EVERYFRICKIN DAY!!!! Because people don't seem to understand what you just said!!!!!

grains are unsustainable. it takes more calories to plant harvest process then cook grains than come back to man when they eat the grain. we are converting oil to food to make up the loss and its hurting the planet. Cain gave a Burt offering of whole grains to God and god got so pissed he said get the fuck out and dont come back, then in a vegan induced dementia Cain murdered Able. So i have completed scientific and religious reasons against whole grains.
@PEEJ012 agreed however, if you stop eating the wholegrain diet you never spike insulin and so you never get hungry in the first place. hunger is not natural.
@datzfast hunger isn't natural? I'm not sure that i agree with you. in the animal kingdom, animals only eat when they are hungry, right? they don't eat for the sake of eating the way we do. and hunger is a signal sent to the brain from the stomach, then back to the stomach, causing it to growl and tell us that we are hungry, right? so I'm pretty sure hunger is natural
@PEEJ012 wrong the hunger you feel is detrimental for survival. and is only a modern phenomena induced by artificial peaks in insulin not obtainable by natural evolutionary diets. mans desire to eat is driven by energy requirements, not hunger. you are a fat ass because of hunger, not because you need to store energy.
my whole childhood, my mom fed me morning star farms corndogs, and i never knew. i had NO idea it was't meat. apparently i didn't know that until i started buying them in high school. So apparently, when I ate my first corndog, I was 14.
I love meat (excuse me while my inner child chuckles) but I don't eat much of it. It's not a choice so much as a necessity on a student budget most of the time. There are plenty of interesting things to eat without meat and if I ever get meat cravings I just buy a massive steak :). I eat no meat on saturday and sunday. That adds up to about 28% less meat, and it's much easier to keep up than 100% vegetarianism if you love meat. There is no reason not to, in my experience.

But yes, I agree with this video. It makes me happy to know that to do good for the planet, we don't have to become full-on vegan, we can just cut back.
Also, I feel that PETA is counter-intuitive to its cause. The majority of veg.'s are perfectly lucid, but since PETA is the loudest, most whacked-out, and most attention-grabbing, they're giving their cause a negative connotation and turning people off to it.
PETA is crazy. I believe in what they stand for, but not at all how they do it. Also, why would you eat beef when you can eat potato products? Soooomuch better. (I don't really like meat)
All whe have to do is to get the animals and plants through cycles of breeding to be able to drink sea water... Then we don't have to worry about water or salting your food anymore ; )
I am a vegetarian. I have been for a few years, but I get a little paranoid when I eat meat substitute. I do like the Morning Star veggie patties, so I decided to try these out.
@hiarielimcindy I want to ask, and I'm not trying to sound sarcastic or like a jerk or anything, but from the logic of a vegetarian, how does a caveman in the wild survive without eating flesh. Why are the berries from a tree not given rights, should we eat them, they are living and organic. Don't the trees we cut down have rights? What about the grass we cut, it's alive. I see the conflict here and it does interest me, so please, what do you think about all of it?
When I eat samon I acchully eating fish that died for scintific knolage about samon, soo that is 100 percent ok becouse I'm eating what would have been wast!

@CompulsiveOrigami ok sorry i will leave and let you spam the replay button of a guy slapping a hot dog on his face thinking it's a god damn cock of another gay man. enjoy your gay pleasures, homo creeps
It is a great point! I completely agree. Besides, if tofu is cooked properly, it tastes awesome- and... what for it... A LOT cheaper than meat! This year I've substituted 2 dinners a week to meatless meals. Next year I hope to be able to slowly up it to 4 a week. If everyone does a tiny thing, it adds up.
I (first and for most) am all for saving the cute animals of the world. But I do wonder. Why is it that the cute and cuddlie animals are usually the first to go. Take for example chinese giant pandas (cute... right?), as aposed to say, cockroaches.
Thank you for reading (unless you didn't in which case I'm sorry for taking your space).
Thanks for this video. I've always refused to eat less meat but most vegetarians argue against animal abuse. I've actually never really heard/thought about your argument before, and I think you are right, and I will try to eat slightly less meat now. DFTBA
Although, I am in favor of saving animals (cute & cuddly or not), I agree that the planet is the bigger picture here. Cutting back on meat could do us a lot of good.
I have been vegetarian for years, and it's the easiest decision I've ever made.
with this title, how does this video not have more views? Anyways, this is like Hank's newest video, and apparently i missed this video while trying to watch all vlogbrothers videos ever made, hopefully i didn't miss more... but to my actual point, i think i've heard that eating human meat makes one more prone to eating more and more and essentially get addicted to cannibalism, but i'm skeptical and going to use various search engines in an attempt to verify this and i would appreciate your help
I refuse to take a lot of vegetarians seriously because they always say *que ignorant teenage girl voice* I just can't stand to kill all those cute little animals! When you eat pork, you're eating Wilbur!! *end voice* I hate it. Actually, I always make a point to tell them that I just had the BEST bacon for breakfast that morning, even if I didn't. But this, THIS is a god reason to eat less meat. I can do this. And I will now make a better effort to eat less meat.
@SmartBlonde250 I find it interesting that you'd call someone ignorant for pointing out that your consumption of meat is responsible for the death of animals, and when you eat pork you could quite possibly be eating a pig named Wilbur, and then you choose to go and generalize an entire group of people and refuse to take them seriously based on what, honestly? Them having a reason that you don't agree with?
@InevitablyInevitable I know that not all vegetarians are like that. It's just that all the ones I ever talk to inevitably say they don't eat meat because they watched a Disney movie and thought the animals were cute. ...Not all farm animals are cute.
And ignorant isn't the word I meant to use. You know that tone of voice really air-headed people use? That's more what I meant.
So yeah, them having a reason I don't agree with is why I don't take them seriously.
@jullex92 no, saving animals is a fantastic thing, but bear in mind that if we don't save the planet, there will be no cute and cuddly animals TO save :(
@AsphodelsAce Really? Vegans avoid asphalt, or the construction of roads in general? Some of the tissues left over go into rubber and plastics. Do vegans avoid these products as well?
Also, my point wasn't so much about vegans as it was about the problem with equating all resources that go into raising a cow as used SOLELY for the beef, as all non-meat products get used, rather than just thrown away.
Also also, you make it seem like we only care about that one pound of beef. There actually isn't any such thing as a vegan, because EVERYTHING on the animal gets used in something. This also means that by eating less meat, you might have a different sort of impact on other supplies.
i LOVE your idea of a logarithmic age scale! i guess that makes sense, seeing as how i'm a total math nerd :P but it's true! kids want more birthdays, adults want less!
I've been vegetarian for two or three years now, but i dislike PETA. they're just not very good at what they're trying to do. I like peta2 though, they seem to be a bit better at it.
@xtiredxemox PETA is bullshit. Sure what they SAY that their goal is is good, But they are hypocrits and idiots. Watch the penn & teller's bullshit episode on PETA I think it is up here on utube.
Sorry, Hank. I don't eat meat and I haven't for about 15 years but I really hate PETA. They make vegetarians look bad and their extremest views/tactics are off-putting, hurting the cause they claim to be supporting.
I couldn't live without meat. I need meat but i do respect peoples decisions to become vegetarian, as longs as they are actual vegetarians not the people who pretend to be vegetarians.
I've been a vegetarian for about a year, and I'm healthier and happier than I've ever been. Plus helping the Earth apparently! I'm glad to have learned (:
I've been veggie for 15 years, with no end in sight. Although it might be hard at first, you have to plan ahead, and you have to learn how to cook, I guarantee it's worth it. Healthier too.
I'm just saying, instead of having a group for eating less meat, you could just become Catholic and follow all of the fasts correctly. I'm Byzantine Catholic, and I follow four fasts (40 days each) where I dont eat meat, A week long fast with no meat, and then I never eat meat on fridays. If I did the math right, I am not eating meat 176 days of the year. Woo me and crazy old religious practices that actually help the environment accidentally!
I am in the process of transcribing the script starting around the 1:50 mark to use and quote in my final paper about food for my 100-writing class. DFTBA. <3
My sister is a vegetarian for health reasons, (people born with one kidney don't do well with a lot of protein) so we have a lot of Morningstar products over here. The chicken nuggets are freaking amazing. I'll have to try a corn dog now, heh.
Hank I respect you and all, but this is the most ridiculous video I have ever seen you do. All I can say, due to the internet word economy, is to suggest looking at Nikolas Lloyd's opinion article "Why vegetarians should be force fed lard with lard" before you make any rash decisions about meat. It's not as bad as it sounds, it's actually quite illuminating.
Oh, and I will take a pound of the PETA presidents meat and eat it, on camera, if this is never mentioned again.
@loahnuh You're completely missing the point and letting the pride of having an informed opinion keep you from listening to the informed opinions of others. The article you cited it very insightful and has a lot of good points. But it does overlook issues ie (according to THE U.N.) 1/5 of man-made greenhouse gas emmisions are related in some way to the meat industry. The problem isn't in eating meat, but the fact that Americans eat too much. Hank is saying reduce meat, that's all.
@GinoftheWind Your point is valid in that I did miss the point but I still stand that thinking to reduce meat consumption is fallacious, doubly so when you consider there are alternative ways to reduce the consumption of water and the production of fossil fuel that do not affect agricultural practices or the incomes of workers in those industries. For instance, toilets I have a real problem with, every time I flush mine I waste ~6L of water, potable water, I'm running out of words again. Dammit!
:) My uncle's toilet door says, "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down".
Anyways, there ARE other ways to lessen impacts, but meat industry IS one of the major players and so it needs to be considered. We should flush our toilets less, and when we're in the cafe and we don't really care today if it's a burger or pasta, it'd do the world a little effort-less good to choose that mac&cheese instead.
@GinoftheWind What really disturbes me about all this is that there is so little criticism about this issue; either this is completely correct (impossible) or no one actually cares enough to refute these arguments. That being said there are improvements that can be made to current farming practices that I can see as well as life style changes that can help the issue but the most I see are overzealous veg heads trying to impose their views on everyone else. That offends me more than anything.
I'm not a vegetarian. I'm not a vegan--but, oh, do I feel better when I eat less meat. My mother is in a long-established relationship with an amazing man, who happens to be a vegan. She herself isn't strictly vegan, but she's found good reason to eat less meat and less dairy. So she does. And my brother does. And I do, too.
It's one of those things where you're "supposed" to be one or the other--like gay or straight--but there are middle people who are told it's not ok to be middle people. :(
I went veggie a while ago, and at first i thought it would be really difficult. but as time went on, it was really quite easy for me. :D after a few months meat starts to smell gross instead of delicious as it cooks.
I'm vegetarian, and I just can't see why anyone would WANT to eat a dead thing- I mean, it's dead! it's a dead body, full of blood and guts and ewwww!
I Love meat, I love steak and chicken too, But I also love Tofu. I want to teach people how to make tastey meals at home with no meat because it's not only good for the world, It also saves you money to replace at least one meal a week with a meatless option.
I've been a vegetarian for five years. But a year ago I decided that to go vegan. And people keep asking me: "How could you, only one little person, help the animals?" But least I try, and it's not just for the animals but for our whole planet. One can make a difference.
As a college student I can say that eating less meat is really not a big deal I usually only eat meat 3 times a week and there are so many other great things to eat. I do enjoy some of the meat replacement products out there, but you can also go for things that don't require meat. Beans and rice make perfect proteins and it is DELICIOUS
I won't lie, I am in no means a veggie and in no means about to start eating souly veggies anytime soon... unless of course the veggies looked and tasted like meat... then I quite frankly wouldn't care.
The idea of artifical or fake meat like the ones used in vegetarian corn dogs and hot dogs and such is actually a pretty smart idea. They actually taste pretty good.
@writergirlchic meaning the grain chickens eat, or corn that's fed to pigs. I live in Michigan and a very large percentage of the corn fields that cover the state are not for human consumption. They are for pigs. It's specially grown for a specific vitamin content for the pigs. So we can eat those pigs.
I'm a seasonal vegetarian - in summer. And in winter, I eat meat a couple times a week. I found that the less meat you eat, the less you miss it. At one point, it becomes even a bit weird, eating the flesh of another being.

I am a vegetarian. I have been for a few years, but I get a little paranoid when I eat meat substitute. I do like the Morning Star veggie patties, so I decided to try these out.
I had it with mayonnaise. It's great.
I searched for this video. Now I'm commenting.

It is a great point! I completely agree. Besides, if tofu is cooked properly, it tastes awesome- and... what for it... A LOT cheaper than meat! Hey. Thank you for being awesome.
Although, I am in favor of saving animals (cute & cuddly or not), I agree that the planet is the bigger picture here. Cutting back on meat could do us a lot of good.
I have been vegetarian for years, and it's the easiest decision I've ever made.
Also, PETA is frickn' weird.

with this title, how does this video not have more views?

SmartBlonde250 8 months ago
@SmartBlonde250 I find it interesting that you'd call someone ignorant for pointing out that your consumption of meat is responsible for the death of animals, and when you eat pork you could quite possibly be eating a pig named Wilbur, and then you choose to go and generalize an entire group of people and refuse to take them seriously based on what, honestly? Them having a reason that you don't agree with?
InevitablyInevitable 8 months ago
@InevitablyInevitable I know that not all vegetarians are like that. It's just that all the ones I ever talk to inevitably say they don't eat meat because they watched a Disney movie and thought the animals were cute. ...Not all farm animals are cute.
And ignorant isn't the word I meant to use. You know that tone of voice really air-headed people use? That's more what I meant.
So yeah, them having a reason I don't agree with is why I don't take them seriously.

Meat is better for you than grains.
Also, we pay farmers to not grow stuff.
Also also, you make it seem like we only care about that one pound of beef. There actually isn't any such thing as a vegan, because EVERYTHING on the animal gets used in something. This also means that by eating less meat, you might have a different sort of impact on other supplies.

Oh, and I will take a pound of the PETA presidents meat and eat it, on camera, if this is never mentioned again.
loahnuh 10 months ago
@loahnuh You're completely missing the point and letting the pride of having an informed opinion keep you from listening to the informed opinions of others. The article you cited it very insightful and has a lot of good points. But it does overlook issues ie (according to THE U.N.) 1/5 of man-made greenhouse gas emmisions are related in some way to the meat industry. The problem isn't in eating meat, but the fact that Americans eat too much. Hank is saying reduce meat, that's all.
GinoftheWind 9 months ago
@GinoftheWind Your point is valid in that I did miss the point but I still stand that thinking to reduce meat consumption is fallacious, doubly so when you consider there are alternative ways to reduce the consumption of water and the production of fossil fuel that do not affect agricultural practices or the incomes of workers in those industries. For instance, toilets I have a real problem with, every time I flush mine I waste ~6L of water, potable water, I'm running out of words again. Dammit!
loahnuh 9 months ago
@loahnuh
GinoftheWind 9 months ago
@GinoftheWind What really disturbes me about all this is that there is so little criticism about this issue; either this is completely correct (impossible) or no one actually cares enough to refute these arguments. That being said there are improvements that can be made to current farming practices that I can see as well as life style changes that can help the issue but the most I see are overzealous veg heads trying to impose their views on everyone else. That offends me more than anything.
loahnuh 9 months ago
I'm not a vegetarian. I'm not a vegan--but, oh, do I feel better when I eat less meat. My mother is in a long-established relationship with an amazing man, who happens to be a vegan. She herself isn't strictly vegan, but she's found good reason to eat less meat and less dairy. So she does. And my brother does. And I do, too.
It's one of those things where you're "supposed" to be one or the other--like gay or straight--but there are middle people who are told it's not ok to be middle people. :(

gelingelingx 11 months ago
As a college student I can say that eating less meat is really not a big deal I usually only eat meat 3 times a week and there are so many other great things to eat. I do enjoy some of the meat replacement products out there, but you can also go for things that don't require meat. Beans and rice make perfect proteins and it is DELICIOUS
