Yeah, that's really hard. But when I do it, I do breathe out of my nose specially the somersault portion to prevent any water going through my nose. At least that's what I do. I don't know how to prevent it without breathing out.
The most thing that we have to learn is how to avoid getting watet up the nose but still we're learning silly turning movements underwater.its easy but keeping water to get up the nose is too hard and ppl wants to learn it ..
@oskunshier there is no perfect or incorrect method behind swimming. I wouldnt worry about it. And a lot depends on why you are swimming and what your goals are. For distance triathlon swimming (like what i'm aiming for) I breathe as it is necessary, irrespective of flags or anything else. Find ten different coaches and they'll tell you 8 to 10 different things...
I normally use my arms to help me get momentum for the turn (I swing them around my body under the water, before planting my feet.) Doing it the way demonstrated in the video really slows me down. Does anyone have any advice?
@kimberleeemarie You should use your forward momentum to help your turn not hands. Speed in equals speed out. First use a noodle as aid to flip without using hands which requires your torso. Then tuck your chin to your chest to initiate the flip (seeing your knees) and your body should face ceiling after turn. For more detailed information look for goswim.tv flip turn.
fist time I did a flip turn was prety good but so much water went through my nose that I had to stop.. I was brave and did it again :)) same again and I gave up..
hey thanks for outtung this video up. i tried it in practice its really good. i tried it in a meet and it helped cut 3 seconds or that couldve been me but it was great. thanks
@junkevin u have to breath out of ur nose a little at least.. it's all breath control, i take a hugh breath b4 the flip and then can only manage one stroke b4 breathing.. but i remember reading in a book how one should take 6 strokes BEFORE and AFTER the flip without breathing
will it be more efficient if i cross my ankles first before i plant it on the wall? so i can propel more effectively before getting back into the streamline position?
i am scared to do that. I think that if i try that my head could hit the wall. Do i have to slow down? How much distance should i keep from wall at the start of flip?
@xLegoWorld think about what makes the underwater thing scary. can you go straight to the bottom of a pooljust diving, with your eyes open, relaxed? that'd be my first step to get in the right mind. if it's water up your nose you're afraid of (because it friggin hurts!!!) try humming when you're underneath the surface - especially when facing up. also: make sure your hands are in a position that will allow you to push enough water to rotate yourself. don't panic. :)
When i do my flip turn im already almost turned over when i push of the wall doesnt the way your doing it not allow for the maxium distances off the wall
i had the same problem. it used to make me angry. now i can do it!!!
my advice is to get a little closer to the wall and duck your head under you as if you wanted your back to hit the will but kick offf and once you get it you just end up mastering it.
i was so surprised the guy is swimming upsided-down right after changing directions. i just did this, and hated the feeling of nose/mouth facing the surface. felt like i was at risk of taking in water thru the nose.

@junkevin As you keep practicing it'll become second nature to you. When I started swimming I was taking a breath every 2 strokes and doing open turns. Now I'm taking a breath every 3 or 4 strokes and doing flip turns all the time. Just give it some time.
when i flipturn i scrunch my face, and my nostrils tighten, it looks funny, but minimum water goes through so i don't waste my oxygen by blowing out, rather i keep it for longer underwaters, or just control ur exhalation, remember how long it usually takes you to break the surface until ur first breath and then just exhale enough constant air ( not a giant exhalation at once)
@junkevin u have to breath out of ur nose a little at least.. it's all breath control, i take a hugh breath b4 the flip and then can only manage one stroke b4 breathing.. but i remember reading in a book how one should take 6 strokes BEFORE and AFTER the flip without breathing

@junkevin It's all about pushing yourself. try doing 2 strokes before you breath, and make it on every set. It's all a mental thing. just believe you can.
@junkevin Here's the thing. Yes, you have and are supposed to breathe out of your nose so water will not get into your nose when u flip. However, you should BLOW your nose. You should relax and leave as minimum oxygen out as possible. Remember, the whole point of blowing out oxygen from your nose is to prevent water from getting in. Therefore, just release oxygen out and not BLOWWWWW as hard and much as you can.
Ugh I've been doing it wrong. I always turn then spin, so that I'm right side up, before kicking off. It alway cost me like half a second because I'd turn and use my arms to push myself into the wall, to try and get a better kick
Whenever i try doing the flip turn, my legs stray off to the right, or my body sorta tumbles to the right side. How do i fix this so i can do the flip turn right?
when yuh flip turn yuh have to kinda tilt to one side which u r doing correctly, try doing iht at the proper time, this probably will make yuh go straight. Remember yuh tilt almost to the last step of the turn
I have the same problem! I think it comes from training in a shallow pool, I was afraid to hit my head on the bottom, so i had to twist to the right (my favored arm). I just recently found out that my arm motion is counterproductive (I would do the weird flailing thing that i thought increased my spin rate)
well when you are stroking on this, you need to take 1 quick breath before you go in, not stop and float for a sec and then flipturn but pace your breathe before you go in the water, when you are turning blow out of your nose 0:15 can you see the bubbles by his nose, when he is at that point, that is when you blow out of your nose, when you stream back into freestyle take a few strokes before you breathe again unless you ran out of air in the flipturn, then you can breathe right away
Practice doing the flip turn alone, w.o the dolphin kick after. Take in a deep breath and than when u flip try not to use yur hands but look for yur knees. At the same time exhale slowly through yur noes. After mastering this, yull learn how to breath efficiently with the dolphin kick after.
My turn is very different to this but it works for me and I can still beat people ^_^. I basically turn onto my back and dolphin kick my way onto my stomach underwater. When I approach the wall use my left arm to help flip my body. Other people have their arms to their side but when I try that my turns aren't as fast.
Theres no sound when i watch it. Has anyone heard of like the snap turn?? Ive tried it but i dont know which is more effective.. Its where the whole turn is a pike until close to the end, and you snap them over you... Is that good??
try and get as close to the wall as you can then check both ur arms in,tip your head down (blow out of your nose if u want)kick off using the ablls of youfeet, twist with you body to make you the right way up,extend your arms,do 4 or 5 fly kicks
Hi, thanks, i already practice this turn. but i saw from the video, we need to turn when we are about 2 or 3 feet from the wall. but i need to swim very close to the wall (about or less than 1 feet) only can make the kick after turning. is it correct way?
Like someone said here, "You want to be far enough underwater when you push off (18-24") so you don't make waves". At the shallow end this is very hard to do. You risk hitting the bottom of the pool, don't you?
You want to be far enough underwater when you push off (18-24") so you don't make waves. That prevents slowing down immediately off the wall. Watch Michael Phelps push off.
honostly i agree that turning isnt all that bad when ur first starting flip turns...what you should do is practice flip turns in the pool and when ur comfortable with flipping try it with the wall
i just can't do this! i get so scared while doing a turn under water! i try to learn everytime i hit the pool....but i back out because i get so freaked out that i'll drown or something...! HELP!
just keep trying man, the secret is to go confidently against the wall, dont reduce the speed at all because the speed that u have when u aproach the wall helps u do a quick and precise turn rather than the forced kinda turns u do when u slow aproaching the wall. U gotta charge that wall like ifu were a bull, keep your head low & all that momemtum will do the job for itself, dont be afraid of practicing it, practice makes perfection
yeah that is it... i do try to go as fast as I can towards the wall, and then tuck my head in...its just the rolling part which for some bizarre reason i can't do! i am practicing a lot and i know it will take a while because it is one of the hardest things for me to actually teach myself that........
If you do like Curl-ups, where you do like a sit up and bring your legs up to your chest at the same time, this will help tons with your turns! Try to do like 50 per day. A good idea to do before you swim like after you stretch
I learned by using flippers to keep momentum going into the wall. It helped alot and now I don't need them. It takes time to learn but worth the effort if you want to swim efficiently.
All you people should stop saying he would be on the wall sideways, no he is doing it fine. If you haven't gotten this turn down then the side one will be faster but once you learn this flip you will do much better.
Also pay attention to how he put his hand down near his thigh when he flips and he doesn't put the to his side, which slows a flip drastically. Also when he brings them back up they go straight into streamline
His feet need to hit a tad higher on wall and he needs to dolphin a lil sooner after push off. He's dead in his glide for a sec after he makes contact.
ya just do it and it probley wont happen and if it does which i highly dought it will than get rid of the water in your ears and try again stop being afraid :)
he did that wrong, you're supposed to be side-on on the wall after you've rolled and push off the wall on your side so it's easier and faster to go back on to your front
Cool. I'm having a hard time to get it. I tend to lose direction when pushing, I lean to the left while I try to rotate. Today I managed to push with the back down, and only then start rotating, managing to keep a straight direction. But I feel it will take long before I can do it seamlessly. But I've been swimming for only four months.
you're right, if he goes up, he will be faster, but he will also come out of the water a lot faster and lose a huge amount of distance. So, in the long run, his technique makes more sense. Besides, his pushoff and kick are strong enough to carry him out far and back into swimming position.
you are actually suppose to push on top part of the wall to go down motion and your body, naturally, will get you up the surface doing a dip motion underwater. That is the most efficient way of underwater kick
you need to be less cautious when approaching the wall. try to test how far away you are first by getting your bearings - so do it slowly and see where you legs end up after the flip. feel your way to the wall then soon u will find your feet naturally finding the wall and then pushing off to complete the stroke. once you get used to this it really is quite easy!! hope this helps
You definitely should not be entering other lanes after your turn. I would recommend going through the motions of the turn very slowly to practice and look up (ahead of you)to get lined up before you push off the wall. Practice this for awhile and then work on increasing the tempo of the turn.
Exhale as you flip and then when you surface, get a breath and swim. I always exhale through my nose when I do a flip turn to keep water from shooting up my nose and then inhale when I surface and continue swimming.
yeah same happens to me ... n sumtimes its very painful .... but thanx to LDC454 , Cronwill and lifeinnuce ... i'll try doing the way they just told ... =) .... me goin for swim ... take care ...
breathe a stroke or two before you flip so you have enough air to blow through your nose during the actual flip, streamline, and kick to the surface. i've been doing them for so long it's second nature to me now.
my coach says the only thing i need to work on is rolling onto my front WHILE im pushing off.......... does anyone else find that hard?!

same thing was affecting me for a while.
this happens when you "get scared" and subconciously your body twists as it tries to bail out of your tuck during your flipturn.
consciously focus on pulling your head down and putting it directly between your knees; that did the trick for me.

ocdICALkidd42 3 years ago
i am just starting a swim team and it looks so easy but its soooo hard!
i keep going to close
and then i go to far! and then i turn during the flip (don't even ask me how i do it!)

i just can't do this! i get so scared while doing a turn under water! i try to learn everytime i hit the pool....but i back out because i get so freaked out that i'll drown or something...! HELP!
frameshopperxxx 3 years ago
just keep trying man, the secret is to go confidently against the wall, dont reduce the speed at all because the speed that u have when u aproach the wall helps u do a quick and precise turn rather than the forced kinda turns u do when u slow aproaching the wall. U gotta charge that wall like ifu were a bull, keep your head low & all that momemtum will do the job for itself, dont be afraid of practicing it, practice makes perfection
andresrojas22 3 years ago
hey,
yeah that is it... i do try to go as fast as I can towards the wall, and then tuck my head in...its just the rolling part which for some bizarre reason i can't do! i am practicing a lot and i know it will take a while because it is one of the hardest things for me to actually teach myself that........
thanks soo much for ur advice......
frameshopperxxx 3 years ago
Hey,
If you do like Curl-ups, where you do like a sit up and bring your legs up to your chest at the same time, this will help tons with your turns! Try to do like 50 per day. A good idea to do before you swim like after you stretch
Tubb1717 3 years ago
I learned by using flippers to keep momentum going into the wall. It helped alot and now I don't need them. It takes time to learn but worth the effort if you want to swim efficiently.
hgilmore69 3 years ago
I hate when I'm standing there in the lane and some person comes swimming up does the flip turn while splashing water in my face!!
Which is why I'm going to learn this soon =D
crudemood 3 years ago
i hate when people are standing at the wall when i'm trying to do a flip turn, those people get in others ways
dwright944t 3 years ago 6
haha. dont worry i'll stand to the side for you =D
crudemood 3 years ago
@dwright944t once i did it ON a guy standing there.. of course, the next time i approached to the wall, there was NO ONE there :P
nadkun 1 year ago
All you people should stop saying he would be on the wall sideways, no he is doing it fine. If you haven't gotten this turn down then the side one will be faster but once you learn this flip you will do much better.
Also pay attention to how he put his hand down near his thigh when he flips and he doesn't put the to his side, which slows a flip drastically. Also when he brings them back up they go straight into streamline
tim1bob 3 years ago
Thanks for your comment, yes, I think the position of the arms stright and down near the thigh is a key element to achieve a good flip turn.
YARTES2K8 3 years ago
His feet need to hit a tad higher on wall and he needs to dolphin a lil sooner after push off. He's dead in his glide for a sec after he makes contact.
Lookatallthevideos 3 years ago
hello i try that in a swim meet and it worked for my free i broke 1:00 minute for 100 free
then i tried that for my back and went a 1:08 !! peaople this works!
bsyou123 3 years ago
ok, time to learn this!!!
mc1703 3 years ago
ya just do it and it probley wont happen and if it does which i highly dought it will than get rid of the water in your ears and try again stop being afraid :)
WarGodKills 3 years ago
he did that wrong, you're supposed to be side-on on the wall after you've rolled and push off the wall on your side so it's easier and faster to go back on to your front
crystal7910 3 years ago
you should stop being afraid of that, remember JUSt DO IT! ;D
adroj182 3 years ago
how does he keep his hands in the same position the whole time? if i try to do that i start to sink
xevilelmox 3 years ago
Lots of practice. It took me a long time to master the flip turns and I've been swimming almost 26 years.
LDC454 3 years ago
You took 26 years to master the flip turns?
Eikinkloster 3 years ago
No. I've been swimming 26 years. It took me about 2 months to master it. I also learned on my own. My swim coach didn't teach flip turns.
LDC454 3 years ago
Cool. I'm having a hard time to get it. I tend to lose direction when pushing, I lean to the left while I try to rotate. Today I managed to push with the back down, and only then start rotating, managing to keep a straight direction. But I feel it will take long before I can do it seamlessly. But I've been swimming for only four months.

lol
bossbro73 3 years ago
no they said they have been swimming for 26 years.. and it took 2 months to learn the flip turn...read.
XxSpartaxX 3 years ago
no they didn't. they said it took "a long time". only when I inquired whether it was 26 years they said 2 months... LEARN to read. damn it.
Eikinkloster 3 years ago
good but not perfect. He go to down after turn. Then he loosing speed. If you go more to up i will be faster
(sorry for my english)
VOR60 3 years ago
you're right, if he goes up, he will be faster, but he will also come out of the water a lot faster and lose a huge amount of distance. So, in the long run, his technique makes more sense. Besides, his pushoff and kick are strong enough to carry him out far and back into swimming position.
srama14 3 years ago
you are actually suppose to push on top part of the wall to go down motion and your body, naturally, will get you up the surface doing a dip motion underwater. That is the most efficient way of underwater kick

When I do a tumble turn, I don't know how to go back onto my front after I have somersaulted. Somebody help! :(
mrsmadness96 3 years ago
when i turn theres no wall to push off of im too far away...am i doing something rong???i neeeed help!! ty =D
Slickzsta 3 years ago
you need to be less cautious when approaching the wall. try to test how far away you are first by getting your bearings - so do it slowly and see where you legs end up after the flip. feel your way to the wall then soon u will find your feet naturally finding the wall and then pushing off to complete the stroke. once you get used to this it really is quite easy!! hope this helps
mdm15 3 years ago 2
also exhale when your doing it and practice flip first thats what i did and i learn it in two days and now i can do backflip
folfol2 3 years ago
get alot of breath so that so will not have water in your nose and get mumentom to do it and do it fast
folfol2 3 years ago
What you do is you do a straight front summersalt after that you twist while your pusthing off the wall and you should be straight. Try it some time.
patsredcel 3 years ago
You definitely should not be entering other lanes after your turn. I would recommend going through the motions of the turn very slowly to practice and look up (ahead of you)to get lined up before you push off the wall. Practice this for awhile and then work on increasing the tempo of the turn.
trj45z 3 years ago
How do you not get water in your nose when you do the lip right before the turn? I always get water in it
playabengals 3 years ago
Exhale as you flip and then when you surface, get a breath and swim. I always exhale through my nose when I do a flip turn to keep water from shooting up my nose and then inhale when I surface and continue swimming.
LDC454 3 years ago
LDC454 try not to hold your breath while turning under water but breath out when you turn hope that helps :=)
Cronwill 3 years ago
pretend like you're blowing your nose while you are doing the flip turn
or just exhale through the mouth or nose
lifeinnuce 3 years ago
yeah same happens to me ... n sumtimes its very painful .... but thanx to LDC454 , Cronwill and lifeinnuce ... i'll try doing the way they just told ... =) .... me goin for swim ... take care ...
Gorillas47 3 years ago
breathe a stroke or two before you flip so you have enough air to blow through your nose during the actual flip, streamline, and kick to the surface. i've been doing them for so long it's second nature to me now.
emster12733 3 years ago
after the turn how does he move his boyth feet like that like a flipper or something
turuu214 3 years ago
it is a kind of kick called the "dolphin Kick" and is used to gather speed under water with more ease than a sissor kick.
pheelyfan14 3 years ago
ha.. i always almost drown cause i get water in my nose.. so now i see my mistake.. breath out? i think?

I don't like the butterfly kick off the wall, I prefer flutter off the wall, but whatever floats your boat.
heart1612 4 years ago
-Butterfly kick is much faster and your walls are the fastest part of your race
-So if you want to be faster work of your dolphin kicks of your wall!
DrWhoFanatic47 4 years ago
i mean faster than freestyle kick in response to heart1612
DrWhoFanatic47 4 years ago
yeah, I didn't know it was "legal" to do fly off the wall because I remember people getting dqed for it, but it was probably just a crappy official.
heart1612 4 years ago
It's dolphin kick to be technical, fly kick is a double kick cause by the motion of your body
FauxCock 3 years ago
arent they all crappy? I hate officials
InsanePuppy11010 3 years ago
This is a very good slow motion to show technique. I tend to slow down a bit after the turn but am trying to keep a fast pace.
