Good atempt, remember Watchin this, the best phantom is still John Owen jones, american phantom bore me ask they all sound the same and bring nothin new,I like a phantom who stands out for been different and being dareing, not keeping to ever note.
@DARKmirror70 exactly. Gerard's voice made sense with how he was trying to act, which for me is why he is a good phantom. granted Michael Crawford has a voice that i don't think anyone can touch, the point is that his voice is made for BROADWAY. his voice matches his medium, and for Butler it's the same way. he's an actor, so his voice acts right along with him
All brish singer sound american when they sing good music because we have natural voices so when a foreigner sings good he sounds american....No i don't think that i was just having fun
I think that was beautiful. Not forced and pitch perfect. He hasn't got the power behind his voice like some do but absolutely well sung and lovely to listen to xx
Come on people, this was a decent performance. He's not as big voiced as some of the other phantoms but his pitch was perfect, his tone is clear and unforced. His is just more of a pop singer's rendition than that of a classical one.
Not the best, but I love the soul of a black man singin' it! At least hes not all harsh and operatic from David Guillame, (BESON) who took the role on Broadway shortly after Michael Crawford.
i remember watching this performance on tv, and obviously the quality was much better because of it. i also remembering what a fantastic job i thought he did, and i stick to that. david grant is definitely one of my favourite singers of this song, his passion and respect for it is obviously strong, which adds everything to his performance for me. well done! i wonder whether the people making these negative comments are idustry proffessionals or no? hmm.
For a guy who professes to be able to teach singing & keeps going on about "chest voice" he doesn't appear to have one - the low notes are so breathy & weak - where's the resonance David? Most average West-End chorus guys can sing this.
everyone is entitles to their own opinion but the average west end voice for a guy is baritone, the phantom is a tenor, so not most average west end guys, sorry i'm just very picky and precise :P
Yes. Robert Guillaume replaced Michael Crawford as The Phantom of the Opera in the Los Angeles production back in the late 1980s, making Robert the only African-American to play the Phantom.
On second thoughts he's not out of his depth at all. He's set the song up to his best advantage and uses his skills to hit the right high notes, if not the lows. :)
he has a nice voice - that is a really smooth delivery and a really nice tone colour, but rusty is right. his support is all over the place (hence the uncontrolled vibrato, dropped notes etc). but hey, that could just be nerves.
Pretty good, considering the song, but I've heard way better amateur performances. That last "night" was way too shaky and not nearly long enough. But he still did pretty good, I give 4/5.
Michael Crawford has always done the best version of this song. Comparing an out of tune Gerald Butler to MC is just really weird. I like some of Sarahs stuff as well but her rendition just doasn't have much emotion. She sings it to rigid(nobody sings everything perfectly). Michael was the only one to score a top ten hit with this song.
Well, I don't know what you lot are complaining about. I thought this was a very good performance. Granted, it could have been better, but not by much. I still prefer Gerard Butler singing it though. :)
Thanks for the great musical addition to your youtube postings! I loved the experience of learning what "David Grant" goes through in his life to get really good at a really fantastic song!
voice is very wobbly but very hard song to sing. i have had to sing christens nd megs parts b4 nd also very hard esp if haven't sung 4 long tym i realli want to find jb singin raoul so if any1 knows were i can find it
If you have an iPod and iTunes, go on the iTunes Store and type John Barrowman into the search box. It'll come up with all his albums and there's him singing 'All I Ask of You' with Claire Moore.
nobody will ever beat michael crawford

I think he just needs to lengthen his notes, it's quite sharp and snappy. Also, don;t like his A flat!

e sang this song in class and there are some people in my class who can't sing and they sing this better than him.
He's awful and I think it's dusgusting that he coaches people.
I would not want him or Barrie Bradshaw to coach me.
They would ruin my voice not help it.

Wow, this is one of the best takes on the song I've heard. This guy's voice is incredibly smooth and seductive.
And for all you guys saying Butler and David Cook are "the best Phantom," you're obviously underexposed to more talented performers.

it's not thrilling, vocally speaking, but he knew he couldn't make it there and he decided to act the interpreter.
he manages: he's incredibly soft, seductive, it isn't hard at all to imagine him as a real phantom and a lover.
