@InvidiaBlue , You cover the bath tub so that you can maintain the temperature of hot water. The Japanese style of bathing is that you wash your face, body, and hair outside the bath tub (I use a shower in the same bathroom), and after all the washing is done, you use the bath tub only to relax in the hot water. This water must be kept very clean. You also cover the bath tub to keep the water hot. Then the next person in your family will use the same hot water in the tub.

Continued: When you are relaxing in the hot water, you usually take the covers away. Only when you leave, you cover the tub to maintain the temperature of the hot water for the next family memeber to use. Maru seems to follow the owner when she takes a bath. In this case, it seems that she uses one of the boards to cover a half of the tub so that Maru has the space to sit on and relax.
