  • Brian, thanks again for taking your time to EDUCATE the rest of us!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brian, thanks so much for this great video. One thing I want to ask is this... in the Chilton's guide, it says that you should lock down the timing belt adjuster arm (using the slot on the left of the arm) by putting in a timing belt cover bolt and then loosening the big adjustment nut. That way, you are still holding the tension on the timing belt but can remove the belt for the balancer shaft. I'm not replacing the timing belt but I am swapping out the cylinder head. Is that step necessary?

  • @MCRIZZLE1 That step isn't mandatory it makes the job easier to handle.

  • Hi Brian love your vids! I have a question about TDC. I am changing the waterpump timingbelt on my 93 legend. I messed up on one step :( I did not line up the TDC marks before I removed the crankshaft bolt or the old timing belt. I found out after I was suppose to do that before. Now my TDC marks on the two upper cams dont line up at the same time. If one does the other is not on it mark and vise versa. Am I suppose to line up one and move/force the other cam by hand? to line it up. ?? Thanks!!!

  • @fastjdm Ask me a better question with less opportunity for me to become liable for you messing up further. Alright. The cams are under pressure from the valve springs. On a DOHC engine like that you need a holder tool. It's easy to put on with the belt on. In your case you're just going to have to do the best you can to get them lined up. Unfortunately it's now VERY risky to bend valves too don't "force" it, but finesse it using two people if needed.

  • @briansmobile1 Thanks Brian. No worries what ever information you give me is helpful and I do not hold you liable for anything. The motor is actually a SOHC 3.2 V6 liter (C32A1) I am actually surprised it has two cams. I think I know what cam holder your talking about it's shaped like an "H" and works with DOHC engines that have the cams right next to each other. My cams are about 12inches apart..............

  • @briansmobile1 Brian would it be ok with you if I do a mini 1 min video and email it to you so that I can show you my situation? I know your a busy man, but maybe you can check it out when you get a chance, and tell me what you think after. Thank you!

  • @fastjdm You can post the video to your channel. Then you can go to the comments here and choose post a video response. Then select the same video you posted to your channel. That way I'll see it and be happy to share my thoughts on it.

  • @briansmobile1 OK. Thanks!

  • @briansmobile1 Hey Brian update: She's up and running! :) I just lined up the cam that was off by hand gently like you said. Thanks again! Peace!

  • @fastjdm You're welcome- good work!

  • Is this the same for a 1991 a friend is wanting to sell me the car I'm not sure if it's worth four hundred . But I guess I can do it with your video. Do you know if it's an interference engine?

  • @eggplanthead44 Technically it is, but most that snap a belt at low speeds are OK. The ones that do his usually only mildly bend valves on a couple cylinders.

  • i have a 1.8 honda engine, in my 1992 aucra integra, is this the same way ti but a new timming belt on my car ,its still running great , has 89,000 miles , but i know that honda aways require a new timeing belt, to reach its goal, they what 1200 to fix it, if you can stir me in the right diction i would greatly appicate, i heating toward ND< and i am in 17 degrees weather now, and advive for a man on a bught/, thanks jbw@nodes.com

  • @lakid714 Yours is quite a bit different. I would be sure to get a diagram. The principles are the same, but the layout/procedure is a bit different. (I used to own/drive one just like yours)

  • It was hard to focus on what you were saying because of the shitty Bette Midler tunes in the background. No wonder you weren't feeling good.

  • @inertia74 LMAO DAWG! Bette Midler is the SHIT!

    WIND BENEATH MY WIIIIIINGS!

  • Great video as always....watching lots today...lol...but this makes me miss my Accord dude!

  • See previous post. I have a 1991 honda accord that was leaking water and oil mix from under the timing belt cover. I can't seem to find a bad seal though. It actually looks like oil is coming from behind the tensioners, is that posible? Before I start pulling things off. Again thanks for the video.

  • @smeee454 It's likely a water pump gasket and cam seal.

  • Thanks for the video, I mistakenly loosened the tensioner nut thinking I needed to, to remoce the cover. I rotated the crankshaft several times to align the camsthaft to TDC while belts were loose. I believe I need to replace the water pump and seals as well as both tensioners, The cam belt tensioner is making a noise when I spin it.

Did I screw up anything in loosening the tensioner nut and rotating the crankshaft? All pullys are still in the same position as when I removed the belts

  • And also what socket did you use to take out the bolt from the crankshaft pulley?

  • @Darkmand8 I used an oxy-acetaline torch to heat the bolts washer and then I used a 19mm socket with an impact gun.

  • @Darkmand8 there is also a socket that can be bought that fits inside the hexagonal pulley hole and attaches to a breaker bar that you can rest against the ground to keep the pulley from spinning freely because the bolt usually is super tight. check amazon that's where i got mine like $30.

  • @nnospoh do you know what is it call that hold the inside socket of the hexagonal?

  • @Darkmand8 its not letting me post a link to it but go to amazon and search for a "honda crank pulley tool" and it should be i think 50mm hexagonal tool that fits on the end of a breaker bar. hope that helps

  • @Darkmand8

Search on ebay for a honda harmonic socket. This makes the job so much easier. It's a black socket that is hollow on the inside allowing a 19mm socket to fit through the middle.

  • @onlineseeker311 I have one. I still like the torch if there's salt water exposure type corrosion. Thanks for sharing that though.

  • did you put a block of wood under the gas pan to support the motor mount? can you help me?

  • @Darkmand8 Oil pan lol

  • haha you must be mormon, digging the back ground music :)

  • @brandman279 You'd sure think so wouldn't you? lol

  • @briansmobile1 what year of honda accord do you have? and i take it you are pretty good at fixing them? My honda accord has been having some transmission problems and was i'm just looking for advice

  • @brandman279 It's not mine. I'm a professional mechanic. It's just a guinea pig for the video. I would refer you to a transmission specialist. I know them well, but others who specialize know them better.

  • my timing belt broke on the way home from work i hope no damage vavle hitting piston. so got a new timing belt you think i should change water pump same time car 1997 honda accord lx 203000 miles nice video

  • @macdaddy1600 I always put a belt on and the harmonic balancer with no cover and fire it up to check first. If it's OK then I take it back down and replace the water pump.

  • I keep getting an error loading your video?

  • @NC2Wheels On weekends when people have down time to fix their cars my views go up fast. It's probably getting traffic right now.

  • on the engine mount you said the metal tab goes under the hydraulic portion of the mount,,,what does that mean? im asking because i have the same car and just replaced the timing belt..but was not paying attention to how the safety tab you mentioned goes on...does it go under the mount? thanks....

  • @hondaslave help me out- what's the time stamp on the vid where you're asking about?

  • @briansmobile1 its at 1.00....i beleive it goes under the mount

  • @hondaslave Cool. Ya that plate should face down. Good luck man!

  • Comment removed

  • Respond to this video... so it goes under the mount right,,,not facing the drivers fender?,,,,,thanks brian

  • @hondaslave When you put the mount in place (with the motor supported from underneath) the tab should point to the radiator or firewall. Then you align it to point under the bracket that bolts through the timing belt and point to the engine. Then tighten it in place. It's there to make assembly of the car easier at the factory. If you don't tighten it though it will rattle up a ruckus.

  • Which way to you turn? Clockwise or counterclockwise?

  • @Kmuonelo It depends on the song I'm dancing to. When I listen to LMFAO I usually spin counter clockwise. Good question. I don't often think about which way I turn I'm always thinking about one specific thing I'm working on and which way IT is turning.

  • is this the same for a 1998

  • @hp11208 yes

  • thanks man i love watching your videos its great to learn how to do thing yourself

  • @hondazonda You're welcome. I'm glad you find value in them.

  • i see in this video you heated the bottom crank wheel with oxy if you dont have one you can remove the starting motor and jam the flywheel with a big crowbar thats how i did mine

  • @hondazonda That's a great idea and great thing to share here. Thanks for posting that. You're awesome and a smart man.... you probably already knew that, but I'm just going to say it anyway.

  • So Mr. briansmobile1 if all little marks line up and i strap on the timing belt does that mean its done correctly? Will the car start? I had a mechanic do replace and he charged me $100 for the job and now my honda wont start. im thinking he did not replace the timing belt properly. i think im going to have to do it myself

  • @mnr8788 The real test is to rotate the crank twice and see that is STILL lines up right. If you have all the marks right AND the slack and tension are all good it will line up again. Remember the crank rotates twice for every one time the cam goes around.

  • I'm doing this right now, and as a novice (I've only done an alternator replacement in a 95 nissan accord, and replaced one of the radiator fan motors in the same car) this is pretty difficult, but your video is explaining each step pretty well.

I just wish I watched it before I started, since my friend and I are stuck at the harmonic balancer right now. We don't have an impact wrench or the money to buy one.

  • not one shot of the tensoner

  • @natemansur From 4:05 to 4:35 is all tensioner shots.

  • I gave this a dislike because the video was blurry much of the time. The content was great, but the video was essential to understanding the content.

  • @utrahaearn Well thanks for the feedback.

  • Move too much. hurts my brain!!!

  • @DukeCreator Sorry man. I have a tripod now. Can't change the past. Just trying to get the info out there to people the best I can.

  • how do yu take off the crankshaft postion sensor do yu knw if it goes into the oil pan???

  • thanks alot for replying :)

  • @jdmsrv93 Ya you're welcome- I do this to help people out.

  • The belts came off too,,, I tried putting the harmonic balancer back on but that little pin (key weight) would not go all way in, it sticks out about a quarter of an inch, so I don't know wat to do now, I don't know if I have to put the engine on TDC to get the pulleys lined up or is there another easier way of doing this?

  • @jdmsrv93 Ya you've got to line them up again. It's like eating a frog- the longer you look at it the harder it is to do. Just go for it.

  • hi, i was driving the other day and i crank pulley came off loose, i drive a prelude with jdm h22a, so i took everytihng off and looked at it, it seems like my pulley is busted so i bought a new one along with a new key way, when i tried to put everything back the key way would not go all way in, and it stick out about quarter of an inch from the pulley,so i put the bolt back on theres a gap between the bolt and the pulley, so my question is do i have to put the engine on TDC or any tips? thanx

  • @jdmsrv93 That sounds normal. If the belt stayed on fine then just stick the new harmonic balancer on there. Bodda bing badda boom.

  • I've been getting sporadic hesitation and misfires under acceleration. I've checked my coil, plug wires and plugs. My next idea is to check/clean my injectors, although I have used FI cleaner recently. My fuel filter is fairly new as well. I'm kind of at a loss...my next idea is to pull off my distributor and look for any arcing. Could a stretched timing belt do this?

  • @nightmathzombieethan Timing belts don't stretch. I'd check your throttle body for excessive yuck.

  • @briansmobile1 Even ancient rubber ones? (Possibly from the 80's...not sure, but hasn't been changed in at least 7 years). It's an 86 Prelude.....It also only misfires while accelerating under load...in neutral it runs properly throughout the rev range. Well, I'll give it a good cleaning! I hope you're right! Thanks Brian!

  • @nightmathzombieethan The EGR valve ports through the intake manifold, any of the bazillion vacuum lines, and a clogged catalytic converter would be suspect. I'm guessing you've got the fuel injected 2.0L because you didn't include that it was carbureted.

  • @briansmobile1 You ARE correct sir! She's only 2 Liters but she keeps me happy! LOL Well, I'm gonna check it all out starting at the TB...hopefully my quest will end there (PLEASE be wrong about the Cat conv!)... Thanks again!

  • @nightmathzombieethan Never dread an answer. Always seek it out whatever it is. Then you can correct it. Until then it's just frustration.

  • i have a f22a1 engine and im trying to time teh rear balancer shaft pully and it says to use a 6/100mm bolt and everytime i try to put the bolt in it doesnt go in all the way...wat do i do???

  • @Gandrid1 You have to put the bolt in before taking the belt off. If you didn't do that then check the marks on the one in the video and make all of yours match then it will go in. (like in a belt failure scenario)

  • i just changed my timing belt and my rpms are off its running at 750 almost 800 rpm also where the hell is the obd plug at?

  • @publicroyalty760 It's under the drivers side panel usually to the right. if not check behind the left coin tray. (if equipped)

  • @STHarlow The car has to have 1. Timing 2. air fuel mix 3. compression and 4. Spark. Then it will run.

  • i just change my belt and now it's making a whining noise when the engine hot like in 20 min driving. do you know what the cause of this? or to fix this? any help will be apprecitate... thank

  • @TheFucYeah If you over tighten the belt it can do that, but it also can rub on the cover and whine if it's too loose. You can adjust tension with the cover on. Loosen the 14 mm bolt then torque the crank bolt clockwise 1/16th of a turn and then tighten the nut back up.

  • @TheFucYeah The tensioner needed to be replaced at the same time the belt was replaced. The bearings in the tensioner can be carefully relubed if no noise. But once worn like that, the belt can slop around and slap the timing cover and make noises. Once bearings started screeching on rpm climbs and when they got hot like that, it is a prime indicator of imminent failure. Just like worn wheel bearings, they will complain for a short time before failing to support or seize up.

  • Would a Torque Wrench work on the bolt that needs to be heated up with a Torch?

  • @MegaVince90 Set the torque when the bolt is cool if you want to get it right- if you just want to remove it then it would be fine.

  • @MegaVince90 Yes.....:(

  • THIS VIDEO IS JUST TOO GAY. I CANT SEE SHIT.

  • @Iadyboy Ha ha ha ha! ....... ha ha ha ha ha!

  • If u do it for me I will give 5 dollars

  • @fackyoutoobe2 Okee dokee!

  • @STHarlow It's usually about 5-6 hours if you're new to it. The torch isn't always needed. You'll need a metric socket set sizes 10mm 12,14, 17, 19mm Have a 21mm handy too. You're welcome. Thanks for coming by to get empowered.

  • @briansmobile1 --- How long does it take you to do this job?

  • @aussieker1 2-3 hours depending if I'm feeling my oats or not.

  • Also, I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey

Thank you for your help and assistance.

  • @chuckpop You're welcome

  • Both the timing belt and the balancer belt would be helpful. Also, if I am not removing any of the sprockets, do I still need to insert the 6x1x50 blot to hold the camshaft?

  • Enjoyed your video. Can you help with installing the new belts and the procedure to properly tension the belts please?

    Thank you

  • @chuckpop Timing or accy drive?

  • cool info but a light on video cam would be really helpful.

  • @razypoo978 You're absolutely right! I really whipped that one out as I was sick that day.

  • Stopped watching this video at 1:49... i couldn't listen to that damn music! What's wrong with you man?!!

  • i thought the four cylynder had a timing chain?

  • @Travisthehead Some of the newer ones do. Most all the older models had belts. They are lighter in motion and rob less power from the crankshaft and facilitate better acceleration of the engine. These two things make them quite popular, but poor maintenance and bad press are making timing belts less popular despite their advantages.

  • Thank you very much for taking the time and hassle to share this knowledge. You've helped me out in my planning the project. The tips on lining up the notches is also huge and of course, I've now been able to see the infamous drive pulley bolt that I've read so much about. I know it's going to be a pain. THANK YOU again for taking the trouble to record, edit, and post this video!

  • @RobotCentral You're welcome and thanks for posting.

  • Turn off the music......

  • @zenuke yes father...

  • I love the top rated comments for this video. One has a video recorded from a cell phone about how to sweep water away from his 'Fairlady'. The other has a video hoping to thrill people who have never driven above 70 MPH.

Thank god for people who know it all.

  • @teddybeardustin I had to watch both to understand the randomness of your comment and found hypocrisy running rampant. I filmed this without expectation of any reward- you know- to help people out. People totally look a gift horse in the mouth today as much as ever don't they?

  • @briansmobile1 YES people do look a gift horse in the mouth when what they should really be doing is just simply saying THANK YOU. and that is what i would like to say thank you Brian for the much needed help and info.!!!!! on most other sites they want you to pay for the kind of help your giving people for free!! i for one can see this for the gift it is and once again say thank you for all the help you are giving everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i have another problem that i need help with. now that the timing belt is fixed(finally). when the car is running but your not moving the idle is low and acts it wants to stall, how do you advance the idle?(1991 honda accord)

  • @PDavis1989 Usually with that symptom the timing needs to be set properly. Don't forget to short the jumper on the passenger side floor area while timing it.

  • thanks for the info! my husband is helping his friend replace his timing belt (giant PITA). the one day he didn't help, the friend had someone else help(who was supposed to know what he was doing.HAHA) well they didn't tighten the timing belt right and now my husband has to go back take everything back off and fix it!! ugh!!

  • when your putting the altinator back on (1991 honda accord) the bottom bolt is that the tention bolt?

  • @PDavis1989 The bottom alternator bolt is the pivot bolt. The top one is the tensioning bolt.

  • hay bro do u no if thats the oil pump underneth the waterpump what u call the cam balance. i dont on what it is because i need to replace it on my honda accord.

  • @n8ture2 The one that's around the crankshaft or bottom drive gear is the oil pump. The cam ballance shaft is a counterweighted shaft to offset the imballance of the lobes on the camshaft.

  • @briansmobile1 so what is that item called for the bottem right, i thort it was the oil pump due to a little bit of oil came out when i opened it just a little bit. and 1 more thing whats the year of the car u r working on.

  • I think this is an ok video but dang, get rid of that music

  • yea this one looks lil difficult

  • jw... can i use these same instructions for a 1991 honda hatchback??

  • @skeeterthadon Civic's are different. They are easier and only have one belt. If it's an Accord wagon it's the same.

  • did this last week...man what a PITA.

  • @1SirCarlton It can be. I can do them in my sleep or blind folded now that I've done so many. First one sucks to do for sure.

  • Is this the same as Acura Integra?

  • @PikabooxxD Nope. The I integra is DOHC (dual overhead cam). It's similar, but the marks are different.

  • Hey Brian love your videos. I got a question for you and wondered if you can help. I was replacing a timing belt on a honda accord identical to this one, after I put everything back on i noticed the crankshaft was at TDC and the camshaft was 180 degrees off. what is a possible solution to this problem?

  • @exceptionalchris If you rotated the crank one complete revolution, OR if that's how it was when you started that's normal. Your crank rotates twice for every one time the cam turns. That's why the gears are different sizes the way they are. This is why they always say rotate the crank two complete revolutions to test when you're done. This way the marks all line up again.

  • @briansmobile1 I just wanted to say thanks for your response back to my comment it was a lot of help. This was the first time I had ever done a timing belt and it was a big headache but well worth it. I love your videos they have been a big help, Thanks!

  • @exceptionalchris You're welcome.

  • Dude turn off the radio, was a little distracting.

  • @fymama Normally I blast the music while I work, or at least I used to. Back when this was made I was just throwing up information for the sake of getting it out there. What I'm saying is you're right. It is distracting.

  • ive got a problem my honda accord jumped time, valves arent bent but ive got it back in time but when i go to start it the small belt rotates but the other one does'nt. i was wondering if it would be the key that broke or something bigger and more expensive??? any ideas???

  • @304kegger Ya the woodruff key probably fell out. You can buy an assortment and grind it to fit or make one. A good parallel width is the key. (pun intended) ha he he he he. If the key DID sheer off then you've got bigger problems with possible broken off valves or the like.

  • dude!! you need more light cant see nothing

  • DO NOT BUMP THE STARTER TO ATTEMP TO LOOSEN. EVER. on an accord/honda at least. The moter turns counter clockwise, so turning it over will only tighten this bolt. I did it with a home-made tool made out of 2'' piping. A tee, on a short piece of pipe, with a hexagonal end fitting. Its need to be hollow to get the 3/4 socket with a cheater pipe through. Worked good I actually had to grind some on the car to get it to fit, but that was all.

  • It's a nice video, but it's too damn shakey to watch the whole thing. Still good info, but get a different person to hold the camera and upload a new video.

  • JUST NEXT TIME GET A CAMERA THAT HAS " NIGHT VISION"

  • how to replace head gas kit

  • @8NAYEEM You're almost there! Just pull the exhaust manifold bolts from below, undo the brackets under and behind the intake manifold. Undo the throttle and cruise control cables and intake boot, pull your head bolts and you're pretty much off from there!

  • I took my rocker arm assembly off but did not set tdc. Now im having problems putting it back on. The cams are up on 2nd and 4th slightly. I turned the engine by hand a little and the right side of the cam (1st cam possition) pushed up but wanted to know if it was okay to set it at tdc at this point. Any suggestions?

  • @llugz831 If you have the cam out all the valves close and you can set TDC on the crank. Then make sure you install the cam also at TDC. The danger or risk is bending valves. Safeguard yourself from that and you're good.

  • I didn't need oxy to get the bolt off. But my 5 foot cheater bar on my breaker bar proved ineffective till I heated it up.

I used a type Z torch head with some Mapp gas. The nut wasn't glowing but after a few minutes of heating the bolt finally gave way.

Also never use the bump the starter trick unless your engine turns clockwise. If your engine runs counterclockwise as many Hondas do you will actually tighten the bolt.

  • @Bushougoma That's right- good job dude!

  • @Bushougoma

Planning on working on my daughters accord tomorrow. Massive oil leak behind the

timing belt area. Any Thoughts? Could it be the camshaft seal

  • @lsnelick It's usually a timing seal (front of crank) I'd have a cam seal on hand and maybe a balance shaft. My money is on that timing seal though.

  • how did u get the bolt out of the balancer. thanks a lot

  • @lilark2 Heat the bee-otch washer between the bolt and the HB red hot w. oxy acetalyne and then hit it w. an impact wrench. Otherwise you have to make or get a tool that's a hollow hex like 40mm or whatever you HB is. On some, you can put a breaker bar and socket on it and a cheater pipe to the ground or under body and use the starter motor to rotate the crank. (for legal purposes you do that at your own risk w. a lot of soul searching first.)

  • YOUR MAKING ME DIZZY AND YOUR VID SUCKS

  • @sydfloydpink I was dizzy at the time I made it. That's fascinating. Thanks for sharing that with me. = )

  • Thanks 4 hanging in there and shooting the video...

  • @ToloratedNip You're welcome! Thanks for saying thanks ; )

  • y do u hav to take off the mount? is is neccessary? just asking thnx.

  • @joeaccord23 The motor mount actually goes through the timing belt. You have to remove it to free the belt from the car.

  • so thorough..very nice..I have a 00 V6 accord coupe..105K miles..I have to do this asap..

  • @efthimios Thanks for watching. I have a video on the 3.5 liter that's in the Odyssey that's VERY similar to yours on my channel if that's helpful.

  • How would you know if ur timing belt is bad?

  • @Kandemangs The signs are hard to see, so you want to replace it at least every 90,000 miles with the water pump. The signs are, faded print on the smooth face that isn't legible any more, teeth that are showing cracks or separation, nylon chords showing through the back side, excessive dryness, antifreeze contamination, and or oil contamination.

  • @briansmobile1 Thanks bro!
