Thanks for your wonderful tips, you did an awesome job! I'm a script writer and looking to do a short film to enter in a sundance independent contest, would it be okay if I can email you or ask you questions in helping me out? If so, let me know
Check out "The God Complex" and "Rectuma" by filmmaker Mark Pirro. Both films were shot for less than $1000 each. You can find trailers for them here on Youtube. Pirro has been making micro films for over 30 years. His first film was "A Polish Vampire in Burbank" shot in 1983 for $2500 (and that was back in the day when they actually shot on FILM).
any guerrilla filmmaker from LA here? I need to build a crew for my next micro budget film. BTW this is really a great help for guerrilla filmmakers. thanks
Fuck Hollywood. This guy knows what he's talking about. Who needs the police to block traffic just to have a movie star cross the street for a ten second scene? What a waste. Buy yourself a Canon or Panasonic or Sony HD camera, write a tight 80-minute script with just 5 characters, and you'll have your movie.
Simply wonderful advice. For those of suffer from cowardice because of our ignorance, this refreshingly credible advice is a respit. I know how to judge the quality of a film production. I know how to identify a good performance by an actor, a cinematographer, a sound engineer, a cameraman, a casting director, a costume designer etc. I like to know how do a feature film inexpensively. The cost scares me. But I ought to try if I can do it for $2k. Simply marvellous advice. Many thanks.
Robert Rodriguez made El Mariachi for under $8000. He used friends and family members in the cast and crew and even resorted to using an old wheelchair as he didn't have the money for a dolley/track shot. This is the sort of film making that concentrates the mind and spawns creativity - something that Hollywood seems to have forgotten.
Friends is good actors. they are cheap and there good, if they just understands that U the director. To use our friends as actors saves a lot of time with casting. I totally recommend it.
@jackal9188 Yea Scorsese used De Niro in Raging Bull. They went and got Joe Peschi who was not even an actor at the time and no one knew who he was. And the girl in Raging Bull never made a movie before Raging Bull. Everyone, even Deniro and Matt Damon had to at some point act in their 'first film'.
thank you very much this helped loads, im making a very low bidget film, 250pounds, me and my actors are making a war film set in 1999, we have great forest and feild loacations, and we have people who are willing to help and act for free,so i did good, keep up the great work ,5/5
I'm planning on making my own film too, after almost 9 years of writing on it, the only problem... It's a fantasy movie, with fantasy creatures, fantasy world etc AND mixed with humans. So I really don't know how to start on this, even though its my biggest dream...
This is awesome!! It's great of you as a filmmaker to take time to share pointers and tips and a terrific way to advertise (I'm buying your movie as soon as I get paid, heheh!). I'm also into this do-it-yourself filmmaking stuff. I would love to show my stuff and hear your opinion. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!!!
I actually bought a Krasnogorsk 3 camera and wanted to shoot a short movie. I wanted to shoot it at night but I was extremely worried about lighting. But your tips really helped me. Since I'm new to filmaking, I take it one step at a time because it's important to know what you're doing when it comes to film. I don't want to bite off more than I can chew but these simple, uncomplicated tips reeeeaaaally help newbies like me. Thank you for posting.
The great RR has ruined a lot of people because too many people try to cut corners. Wait until you have more than enough and you can't go wrong. If you spent 2Gs, then imagine if you had 6 or 10. Would it be better or worse? Good advice though. keep it up.
You guys could have made this for sooo much cheaper. Case and point. DON"T BUY A STEADYCAM! Use a folded tripod. It's like spraying your movie with a money hose! And if your friends respect you, they won't screw around. AND YOU CAN PAY THEM IN PIZZA. Your $2,ooo movie is my $200 movie. Look into Robert Rodriguez.
Did this film get distribution. If so, then I give you MAD props. If it didn't, then what was the point of this video. Anyone can make a film that doesn't get distributed.
P.S I didn't mean to sound like a dick. I have respect for all aspiring filmmakrs. I am one myself
"songs about your girl friends" was distributed...it is on sale on DVD now. it's a good film. my movie has yet to be distributed but it was shown in a premiere at a theater.
P.s. u did not sound like a dick....just questionable.
Well, wgoodson88, I disagree with you. "Look like shit" is relative. If he can teach me how to make a 2,000 film look like a 10,000 film, then his advice is good, even if the film is distributed. I actually got some great tips and bookmarked this video. "Skateboard dolly" etc... really saved me money, because i was shopping for professional stuff, and can now save money.

a 2,000 dollar movie will always look like shit. Don't be stupid to think otherwise.
wgoodson88 3 years ago
No it doesn't. i have made movies even less than 2000 and people thought i spent 20,000 on it. it just depends on how well you know about filmmaking.
-technique
-script
-camera movement
-preparation.
all of this is what will probably turn your movie into a good one. if you need any help or tips just send me a message. I will be glad to help.
