Wow, really great sounding drums and great playing. I love the drums you put to this song too. Raul Midon is ridiculously talented, but his music sounds so much fuller with percussion. Great job.
Man I hate the look of black drum kits... no matter how expensive a kit is, and how great it sounds, you slap some black lacquer on it and it just looks cheap. I've never liked black drum-sets in all my years of drumming... particularly with silver hardware. My opinion though.
LOVE the sound, but Yamahas can EQ well. the snare overpowers the lower toms and bass, just like they have in the past. if they could all come out even, this kit may be the best weve seen in a while. I still rely on My Sonor Special edition 3007 9 ply maple drums
Great sounding kit man, I love the sound of your snare too, I always tend to love snares that are 6"/6.5" deep but I have to say, I wouldn't mind having that one in my collection. Good job.
man i love yamaha drums. i have a birch custom absolute and it's not easy to find a better sounding kit than that. the PHX range is basically the absolute series on steroids...
wow man great sound and playing! love yamaha's sets... but is that snare stock with the phx or did you buy a different snare... also is it a piccolo snare? and what are the dimensions, and heads... haha sorry im just loving the sound of that snare.
Hey! Im a student at Gateway Middle School who currently studies trumpet and french horn under your dad. Even though I dont listen to your style of music, its easy to appreciate your playing just by how well you play. Keep up the good work, every band student at Gateway has pretty much seen your work and is proud of you!
Thanks! Ha! Not sure but I bet with a good head selection a proper tuning you could make 'em really sing. All Yamaha's are built very well and usually can get the job done!
@mryamaha31 i have a stage custom birch with remo ambassador heads and it sounds sweet, that's the thing with yamaha even their cheaper ranges are really good sounding drums :D
You were being musical. Like you and I know, everyone has their own opinion and they're entitled to that. I would rather see some constructive criticism on here than someone's black balling on someone else's style and taste. I say upload a vid
Keep doing what you're doing man. Pay no attention to these other ppl who say you have to many fills. You're not on a stage right now and Im not saying not to practice different settings like stage feel, stadium or jazz hall type feel. You're playing it how you feel it. Some ppl just dont know any better when it comes to being a musician and showing showmanship. Its not like you were showing off which I highly doubt man. We'd be able to tell if you were then they would be able to say that.
Drums sounds great Brad!..I've got a Yamaha Maple cus. abs. and Birch cus. abs....would some day like to get a Phoenix!....nice job playing and great sounding kit!
Great playing. I agree w/ you the drums sound great. I really like where you went with the tuning. The snare has the perfect amount of ring to it. I would mike the toms a bit so we can hear what they sound like a bit more.
The drums sound real good, but not any better than a good kit by Pearl, DW, Premier, and so on. There's a lot anyone can do to make an average kit sound good - heads, tuning, suspension, not being a suck drummer etc. But still, I'm not knocking your set. sounds great. congrats.
Thanks. I hear you. Most high-end kits are all made in a very quality way and sound great. For me, I haven't ever owned a kit that really nails it on all levels though. Sound, stick feel, consistent sound throughout the kit, stays in tune, solid hardware, great mounts, solid feel (no moving on me), nice finish, clean studio sound (no rattleing, had a DW that did that), tuneable to any situation and never has "thin" sounding highs (had a Pearl like that) nor weak lows. Best kit I have ever owned!
@bradboal True..most high end kits are made in a very quality way. Ive tried out quite a few high end kits..but i still think yamaha are one of the best of the best. I drive a yamaha oak custom and i just love it. Its just an amazing sounding kit..and as per usual with yamaha it has a great feel to it. A friend of mine has a recording custom..and that sounds n feels amazing. PHX is my dream kit though. Your drums sound fantabulous! Yamaha forever.
I really like them. I had never used them before I got this kit, but now I'm sold! They are very warm and have a slightly softer stick feel. Almost "Squishy-er", if you know what I mean. Very cool for these drums for sure!
Great playing. The beat over Raul's guitar lines sounded phoenominal. I just recently bought a stage custom and even though it's a far cry from the phoenix line i couldn't be happier with yamaha. Keep it up man
hey man yeah they do sound nice...i heard carlock play them with steely dan and i thought they fit great with him and the music! well rounded...rounder sound but still has tone
Yeah man...To my ears! Can't tell you a price on here but give James a call and he will hook you up with a better deal than anything you will find online! Really!!!
Nope...but those DG snares are SWEET! I'm playing a 14" x 4" Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau Snare. Surprisingly this snare has a pretty big tuning range! Obviously I've got 'er cranked down on this one. Kind of has that DG crack when up high...
Hah, Norman Music is like 3 miles from my house. I droll over their PHX stock once a month. Once you hear these things in person, all of a sudden $6000 for a kit sounds worth it.
Hello to you in New Delhi! YouTube is so cool...you sound great by the way! Nice Weckl stuff!
I don't currently go to UNT but I did from 1999-2004. I had a great experience and was lucky enough to study with Ed Soph the entire time I was there....
Awesome! You will love it there..Those videos would be good to send too!
One of the cool things about UNT that alot of the other colleges can't provide, is the cheap 24 hr. practice rooms for rent. You get your own private room to leave your gear set up so you can really work out all of the tough stuff they throw at you!
Alot of people think UNT is a "Factory" college, but if you apply yourself there you will find you get the same individualized instruction you would at any smaller college...
Yes, I did...that included a ton of theory etc...When you Major in Jazz Studies you "automatically" earn a Minor in theory. It's a kind of hidden thing...at least when I was there...
thats good actually.. Ive been playing the piano for a while.. no formal lessons.. but through internet and stuff I have a basic idea of scales, chords, modes and stuff.
yeah..and I just sent my videos to Ed Soph. There was some problem with the DVD I had originally sent them, so he wanted me to email him all the tracks. I really hope I get in man..

Keep looking mlcoo17...
Russ Miller has a clip up here called "Sanaga Shuffle". You might be happier with his sound. More mids and highs on the toms. He also is playing just the toms and kick sometimes.
Thanks for that link Brad, very helpful in my analysis, and yes, you're right. Even with the crappy camera mic I can hear the higher tones and they sound pretty decent. Impressive tuning range. I would describe your clip as ultra lush sounding ( the toms & bass ), lush, warm, very melodic. I initially called it a compressed sound, but on further listening, would call it " something nice and very different from anything I've heard before ". Very interesting.
I first saw this line of drums in dave weckl when i saw him live and i quote "this is the first drum kit i have been genuinly excited about and they sound so good!" he said that on a clinic tour he is doing to get the phx series out there!!!
I really like the Matte Black. When the lighting is better (on stage) than my video you can really see the beautiful wood grain. Really classic look. From what I've seen the Matte Natural looks great too!
You are going to absolutely love them. You are right that only a couple guys are making these. Unlike all of their other series of drums they are made in Yamaha's piano factory too! Pretty cool.
I've got a Sure Beta 91 and a Yamaha SubKick blended together on the bass drum. A Sure SM-57 on the top side of the snare. I am also using a pair of AKG Perception 220's as Overheads/Tom mics. I messed around for about a week with the placement of those and ended up putting them about 5 or 6 inches away from each set of toms. Would have been better if I had mics on each tom and a couple of overheads too. Not enough money for all the gear I need....Thanks!
This is Brad Boal. I just wanted to make sure and thank my buddy James Wyrick at Norman Music Center in Norman, OK who hooked me up with this outstanding drumset! James is a very experienced, knowledgeable and helpful guy to talk to about these drums and all of Yamaha's products (which we all know is hard to come by). I have a number and a website that you can reach James at in the "more info" section of this video. I don't think I can leave that info in a comment. Thanks James!

Hello everyone!
