  • NIce drums. Have you ever tried putting the Emps on the batter side and the single ply on the res side?

  • Wow, really great sounding drums and great playing. I love the drums you put to this song too. Raul Midon is ridiculously talented, but his music sounds so much fuller with percussion. Great job.

  • Hey! Nice kit! What ride cymbal are you using in this video?

  • you play as if you're trying to impress

  • I have yamaha maple custom and it"s sound better

  • @misli323 In your opinion.

  • your snare really matches the song at like 1:10

  • How many guys are playing drums there?? :)

  • now how do they sound with no mics in person?

  • PHX drums are some of the most beautiful I have seen.

  • Man I hate the look of black drum kits... no matter how expensive a kit is, and how great it sounds, you slap some black lacquer on it and it just looks cheap. I've never liked black drum-sets in all my years of drumming... particularly with silver hardware. My opinion though.

    Great sound!

  • Great Job. I really liked this. GREAT JOB!!!

  • DUDE. What ride cymbal is that?

  • LOVE the sound, but Yamahas can EQ well. the snare overpowers the lower toms and bass, just like they have in the past. if they could all come out even, this kit may be the best weve seen in a while. I still rely on My Sonor Special edition 3007 9 ply maple drums

  • Great sounding kit man, I love the sound of your snare too, I always tend to love snares that are 6"/6.5" deep but I have to say, I wouldn't mind having that one in my collection. Good job.

  • nice compression

  • constantinople ride??

  • man i love yamaha drums. i have a birch custom absolute and it's not easy to find a better sounding kit than that. the PHX range is basically the absolute series on steroids...

  • OMG THEY SOUND SO GOOOOOOD!!!!!!

  • On his website, it says its a 22" K Constantinople Light ride w/ rivets. sounds stellar

  • Whats the Ride your using on this vid, is it a Zildjian K Constantinople?

  • that ride is outta this world

  • What ride cymbal do you use ? Nice vid ! Nice drumming too !

  • The construction philosophy of these drums is dead on! The shells resonate like a violin. Thick, mixed woods ...what a tone and power!

  • wow man great sound and playing! love yamaha's sets... but is that snare stock with the phx or did you buy a different snare... also is it a piccolo snare? and what are the dimensions, and heads... haha sorry im just loving the sound of that snare.

  • Hey! Im a student at Gateway Middle School who currently studies trumpet and french horn under your dad. Even though I dont listen to your style of music, its easy to appreciate your playing just by how well you play. Keep up the good work, every band student at Gateway has pretty much seen your work and is proud of you!

  • Hey Brad....I must admit, I don't know much about drums, but I do know this...you sound great.

  • Raul Midon!! Nice vid man!

  • Very, very nice!

  • Not only do your drums and cymbals sound incredible, but your playing is amazing, tasteful, and fits the song perfectly. You have a great feel.

  • great sound!!!!!!

do you think i can tune my yamaha stage custom to sound like that???????

  • Thanks! Ha! Not sure but I bet with a good head selection a proper tuning you could make 'em really sing. All Yamaha's are built very well and usually can get the job done!

  • @mryamaha31 You're asking for a 700 dollar kit to sound like a 5,000 dollar kit.

  • @mryamaha31 yeh can get a serious sound, stage customs one of the best budget kits around, if not THEEE best imo! :o)

  • @mryamaha31 i have a stage custom birch with remo ambassador heads and it sounds sweet, that's the thing with yamaha even their cheaper ranges are really good sounding drums :D

  • @mryamaha31 Obviously not.

  • lastima el tema una pija... tanto tocar para tocar arriba de ese pop pobre... buen sonido igual.

  • Nice !!

  • Nice Song to play to... Raul Midon :D really good

  • You were being musical. Like you and I know, everyone has their own opinion and they're entitled to that. I would rather see some constructive criticism on here than someone's black balling on someone else's style and taste. I say upload a vid

  • Keep doing what you're doing man. Pay no attention to these other ppl who say you have to many fills. You're not on a stage right now and Im not saying not to practice different settings like stage feel, stadium or jazz hall type feel. You're playing it how you feel it. Some ppl just dont know any better when it comes to being a musician and showing showmanship. Its not like you were showing off which I highly doubt man. We'd be able to tell if you were then they would be able to say that.

  • Drums sounds great Brad!..I've got a Yamaha Maple cus. abs. and Birch cus. abs....would some day like to get a Phoenix!....nice job playing and great sounding kit!

  • waou, excecllent, Tanck you, :-)

    Franck :-)

  • great soundddddddd

  • Hi tom is like OHHHHHHH YEAHHH

    Love the jazzy "bungg" sound.

  • hey, isn't that Johnny Rabb song?

  • what song is it that your playing to? :)

  • omg the rigning on that snare is killing me., there is a limit and pitch limit to the ring on a snare AAHAHAHA my head!!!

  • Killin' pocket, man. Drums sound great!

  • Great playing. I agree w/ you the drums sound great. I really like where you went with the tuning. The snare has the perfect amount of ring to it. I would mike the toms a bit so we can hear what they sound like a bit more.

  • Hey man, what cymbals are you playing? They compliment the kit really nice.

    Also, solid grooves.

  • Great playing, Great Drums, great snare, fantastic man.

  • Thanks man! Liked your vids too. I'm gonna have to steal your old heads upside down on top of your kit idea! Cool sounds!

  • Yea go for it man, I'm thinking I should invent something like that for drums, I'm just too lazy haha.

  • The drums sound real good, but not any better than a good kit by Pearl, DW, Premier, and so on. There's a lot anyone can do to make an average kit sound good - heads, tuning, suspension, not being a suck drummer etc. But still, I'm not knocking your set. sounds great. congrats.

  • Thanks. I hear you. Most high-end kits are all made in a very quality way and sound great. For me, I haven't ever owned a kit that really nails it on all levels though. Sound, stick feel, consistent sound throughout the kit, stays in tune, solid hardware, great mounts, solid feel (no moving on me), nice finish, clean studio sound (no rattleing, had a DW that did that), tuneable to any situation and never has "thin" sounding highs (had a Pearl like that) nor weak lows. Best kit I have ever owned!

  • @bradboal True..most high end kits are made in a very quality way. Ive tried out quite a few high end kits..but i still think yamaha are one of the best of the best. I drive a yamaha oak custom and i just love it. Its just an amazing sounding kit..and as per usual with yamaha it has a great feel to it. A friend of mine has a recording custom..and that sounds n feels amazing. PHX is my dream kit though. Your drums sound fantabulous! Yamaha forever.

  • @Muscovee lets just say your wrong

  • Were the toms mic'd up? I don't see any mics and it was hard to hear what they sounded like. Nice playing!

  • That was fantastic. However, there were to many fills and the snare needs tuning.

  • Thanks. What specifically would you like to hear from my snare? Am I playing too many fills in my intro or the track?

  • Yeah a bit to many fills. The snare sounds awesome but it is just slightly out of tune. Everything else sounds great.

  • the toms and bass sound amazing...very jelous

  • Thanks so much man!

  • to much ring

  • Damn dude, can you calm down with the consant rolls, change it up a bit

  • Uh, sorry......

  • Im sorry it was just getting kinda old doing the same type thing over and over again, but the drums sound amazing by the way

  • Is that a piccolo snare?

  • 14" x 4" Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau Snare

  • wats the song

  • raul midon-state of mind

  • WoW 1:51...what was that ?? :))

  • What is that ride?

  • sounds like K Constatinople medium ride to me....

  • Nice drumming =)

  • Nice choice of song! You came up with a nice drumpart :)

  • I'm a gretsch man meself but I have to admit these drums sounds AWESOME!

Best of luck with them and keep bangin stuff

    $8^]

  • nice playing!!! I like your sound!

  • so how do you like the suede emperors?

im curious about what kind of sound i could get out of those heads.

  • I really like them. I had never used them before I got this kit, but now I'm sold! They are very warm and have a slightly softer stick feel. Almost "Squishy-er", if you know what I mean. Very cool for these drums for sure!

  • Comment removed

  • how do they compare to coated heads?

  • coated heads are somewhat... thick but crispy.... in my opinion :)

  • Great playing. The beat over Raul's guitar lines sounded phoenominal. I just recently bought a stage custom and even though it's a far cry from the phoenix line i couldn't be happier with yamaha. Keep it up man

  • Thanks alot man! Really liked your "One Man Rock Band" Vid! That's some nice independence!

  • hey man yeah they do sound nice...i heard carlock play them with steely dan and i thought they fit great with him and the music! well rounded...rounder sound but still has tone

  • The best sounding drums I ever heard?Whats the price of your drum shells?

  • Yeah man...To my ears! Can't tell you a price on here but give James a call and he will hook you up with a better deal than anything you will find online! Really!!!

  • is that a david garibaldi snare

  • read the description....

  • Nope...but those DG snares are SWEET! I'm playing a 14" x 4" Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau Snare. Surprisingly this snare has a pretty big tuning range! Obviously I've got 'er cranked down on this one. Kind of has that DG crack when up high...

  • awesome playing man check out my drum solo if u have time , im 15 btw

  • Thanks man! I checked out your vids. Nice playing dude! It's always nice to find a fellow Yamaha aficionado!

  • Hah, Norman Music is like 3 miles from my house. I droll over their PHX stock once a month. Once you hear these things in person, all of a sudden $6000 for a kit sounds worth it.

  • Tell James hey for me the next time you're there! You couldn't be more right about hearing PHX's in person! Thanks

  • hey man.. do u go to UNT?

  • Hello to you in New Delhi! YouTube is so cool...you sound great by the way! Nice Weckl stuff!

I don't currently go to UNT but I did from 1999-2004. I had a great experience and was lucky enough to study with Ed Soph the entire time I was there....

  • haha.. yes youtube is cool..and you sound great..

I am trying to get into UNT this fall..

I am sending those Weckl vids for my audition actually..

  • Awesome! You will love it there..Those videos would be good to send too!

One of the cool things about UNT that alot of the other colleges can't provide, is the cheap 24 hr. practice rooms for rent. You get your own private room to leave your gear set up so you can really work out all of the tough stuff they throw at you!

Alot of people think UNT is a "Factory" college, but if you apply yourself there you will find you get the same individualized instruction you would at any smaller college...

  • I am sure it is gonna be awesome..did u major in jazz studies??

  • Yes, I did...that included a ton of theory etc...When you Major in Jazz Studies you "automatically" earn a Minor in theory. It's a kind of hidden thing...at least when I was there...

  • thats good actually.. Ive been playing the piano for a while.. no formal lessons.. but through internet and stuff I have a basic idea of scales, chords, modes and stuff.

  • Yeah man! I heard some up on your MySpace page...Nice!

  • yeah..and I just sent my videos to Ed Soph. There was some problem with the DVD I had originally sent them, so he wanted me to email him all the tracks. I really hope I get in man..

thanks for all the help and info..

  • nice work! what ride u are using in this video?

  • Hey, thanks for watching! I'm playing a:

Zildjian 22" K Constantinople Medium Thin Ride, Low

  • Amazing sound and groovy playing! Were you playing blushdas or regular swiss triplets at 2:41?

  • Thanks for watching! Good ear man! They came out as regular old Swiss Triplets that time. I do love me some nice Blushdas though!

  • I swear you learnt the triplet pattern from Dave Weckl.

  • @otb1234 someone prob answered your question already but i think they are swiss triplets from what i hear

  • ohh my god!, that drum kit sounds excelent man!!

    Congrats!

  • Wow that sounds straight sick man. I've heard you play live a couple times & you're off the hook. Isn't there a record company missing a high payed studio/touring drummer somewhere...? Keep it up.

  • what a nice snare sound

  • Thanks man! Seemed like it fit the track. I tried to tune it to the pitch of his harmonics. Think I got it........

  • Yep, no doubt, James is the man! ...great track and the drums sound incredible...love them for a looong time!

    Ghostnoter - Charlotte, NC

  • Great! Your drums recorded very well and you play them very well too. Thanks for adding this to YouTube...

  • Wow! If I couldn't have my SQ2's I would go for these.

  • You and I must be hearing different things...

  • I'm not sure you have really searched hard enough mlcoo17.

Don't you think it might be good to hear the drums in the context of playing "music" since that is what they will ultimately be used for. Not just fancy solo stuff.

    Keep looking mlcoo17...

Russ Miller has a clip up here called "Sanaga Shuffle". You might be happier with his sound. More mids and highs on the toms. He also is playing just the toms and kick sometimes.

  • There is a clip on here of Ulysses Owens playing Jazz sizes of a PHX kit tuned up high. It's called:

    "U.O @ Yamaha Artist Center"

You may not be happy with the sound though. It sounds like it may just be the cameras internal mic.

Sounds like a good Bop kit to me!

  • Thanks for that link Brad, very helpful in my analysis, and yes, you're right. Even with the crappy camera mic I can hear the higher tones and they sound pretty decent. Impressive tuning range. I would describe your clip as ultra lush sounding ( the toms & bass ), lush, warm, very melodic. I initially called it a compressed sound, but on further listening, would call it " something nice and very different from anything I've heard before ". Very interesting.

  • Thanks mlcoo17! Glad that link helped.

  • I first saw this line of drums in dave weckl when i saw him live and i quote "this is the first drum kit i have been genuinly excited about and they sound so good!" he said that on a clinic tour he is doing to get the phx series out there!!!

  • hey its raul midon

    i saw him in sacramento

    he played this song

    he is very talented

  • Brad, awesome demo dude.

did you prefer matte black over matte natural??

  • Thanks man!

I really like the Matte Black. When the lighting is better (on stage) than my video you can really see the beautiful wood grain. Really classic look. From what I've seen the Matte Natural looks great too!

  • Sweet, because I just ordered one in matte black.

4 month wait though! apparently there are only 2 japanese dudes manufacturing these things.

  • That's awesome man!

You are going to absolutely love them. You are right that only a couple guys are making these. Unlike all of their other series of drums they are made in Yamaha's piano factory too! Pretty cool.

    Enjoy your new drums!

  • wut kind of mics do you use?

  • I've got a Sure Beta 91 and a Yamaha SubKick blended together on the bass drum. A Sure SM-57 on the top side of the snare. I am also using a pair of AKG Perception 220's as Overheads/Tom mics. I messed around for about a week with the placement of those and ended up putting them about 5 or 6 inches away from each set of toms. Would have been better if I had mics on each tom and a couple of overheads too. Not enough money for all the gear I need....Thanks!

  • Nice job. Enjoy your new kit.

  • Wow! Amazing drumming. You should be endorsed with Yamaha!!! I might have to give your friend James a call. Keep up the great work!

  • Great tune choice, bro....

  • Killer grove on a killer song! Raul Midon is a fantastic musician and fantastic guy.

  • Hello everyone!

This is Brad Boal. I just wanted to make sure and thank my buddy James Wyrick at Norman Music Center in Norman, OK who hooked me up with this outstanding drumset! James is a very experienced, knowledgeable and helpful guy to talk to about these drums and all of Yamaha's products (which we all know is hard to come by). I have a number and a website that you can reach James at in the "more info" section of this video. I don't think I can leave that info in a comment. Thanks James!
