Funfact: Each original version of a pokemon generation was meant to have more. The R/B/Y were going to have the seven islands but didn't add them due to the deadline running low. You can still find the unfinished maps in the source code. As for FR/LG the developers wanted to add another region, like what they did in G/S/C but once again the deadline snuck up on them and the project was scrapped.

CORRECTION - pokemon blue was also in Japan, in Japan POKeMON Red/Green were the originals, then an updated version was released, called Blue. This was turned into the USA/European versions of Red/Blue, and later Yellow.
