This is great, thank you! You can't tell it here (and no blame), but in the actual film the music starts off in something like monaural or stereo and then builds up until when the title "BEN HUR" appears, and when "A Tale of the Christ" comes onscreen it jumps to something like quadraphonic surround sound! When I experienced that all I could feel was "WOW!" What must it have been like to see this in one of the elegant theaters they used to have back in the late '50s and early '60s...
My all time favorite movie!!!! It moves me to tears when @ the end Judah has his mother and sisiter restored to health from the risen Christ , and he believes and forgives Mesella for all that was done to him. As the king balthasar said heis whole life was a miracle. When he believed he said he felt the sword fall out of his hand, and was restored to the woman who loved him, and his mother and sisters health was healed from the leprosy. Great movie, and cast and awesome music
THIS is what comes to mind when you think of golden age hollywood; epic scale, music that sounds like an entire orchestra playing in front of you and an almost uplifting atmosphere found that just isnt present in film anymore.
General Lew Wallace was governor of New Mexico when he wrote "Ben-Hur.' He could have easily written about the escapades of Billy the Kid, the psychopath who lived in New Mexico while Wallace was governor.
I watched this movie when I was kid on TV, every year on holy week and then I downloaded because they don´t show it anymore. I NEVER felt a kind of emotion like when I watched this movie , I swear it, if I watch it on the cinema I would cry like a kid
@VitalMusic217 what do you mean not on tv anymore? my grandmother recorded both this & the 10 commandments this last easter. gratned i dont know WHY since i have both movies (as well as the robe & a few other old classics)...............on VHS.....
ANYway...just check amazon or ebay to get the movie either on VHS or DVD.
@MELDtoys I wonder how many of those Titanic albums were sold just to get the Celine song, and how many people bought it because they genuinely loved James Horner's score? When Titanic sells millions of copies, and lots of other great soundtrack albums sell several thousand copies each, then something strange is happening.
Epic film and soundtrack. I consider myself to be spiritual but not a religious person however the scene where Jesus gives water to Ben Hur is incredibly powerful.
I was only 9 years old when this great masterpiece was being filmed, but it has always made me feel that people millennials ago were basically the same kind of people that we are today. Ben Hur is a film with great emotional feeling in it, just as we also would have likely had, if we had stood in the place of this fictitious hero of old.
Over the years we have all been lied to by many false religous leaders and so called prophets. Many things we have been taught are not even in Scripture and millions have swallowed so many lies by these false leaders. If you are a truth seeker, please visit the web site which is displayed in my picture and user name and take the time to read some of the articles... You will be very shocked. There is an audio there that will shock you.
I don'ty know why the scene where Ben-Hur, his mother & Tirzah drink to Simonedes' & Esther's happiness and safe return to Antioch (a still of which is on the original VHS & DVD covers) was deleted from the film. Is the actual scene available anywhere?
this movie is made to God , if you feel sad and bad , see it and can feel more betteer, because is the story of Ben Hur a man how suffer a terrible injustice and the final the men how made his life bad sufer more than Ben Hur does
spoken madmoviesta hey, this animated sick as you say won 11 Oscars, but Hollywood wants to do a remake of this movie will never be matched, you are sick animation in your butt cabron
Though "The Godfather" is a classic, I woudn't neccessarilyy call it one of the best movies ever made, but you're spot-on about "Ben-Hur" & "The Ten Commandments." I'd also call "Gone With The Wind" one of the greatest movies ever made, then the first two you mentioned. Back when movies deserved the title "Epic."
@boyinthedrain : I agree. The Ten Commandments is cheesy IMO. Of course Miklos Rozsa's score had a lot to do with the overall splendor of this film. I can never get tired of watching the chariot race.
@boyinthedrain : Wow! As a Christian, it means a lot to me that you react that way to the movie. I agree with your comment. I care more about what happens to the characters in Ben Hur than I do in Ten Commandments. I think that the director William Wyler knew how to balance between spectacle and intimacy. I love his other movies like "Roman Holiday" and " The Heiress". Take care!
He plays Aragorn in The Lord of The Rings. He has also been in: Appaloosa, Eastern Promises(nominated for Oscar), A history of violence, A walk on the moon, and more. He's pretty beast.
truly one of the greatest movies of all time. MGM or whoever owns the distribution rights to this movie should re-release it in theaters. It's probably a whole different experience in comparison to seeing this movie at home.
Yes. I saw this movie in the theaters six times in the first year. I couldn't get enough of it then, and I still can't.! I have the orginal music soundtrack, and still listen to it.
Agreed I think this was the greatest movie ever made based upon the role of the greatest man who ever walked the earth. The simple fact that hundreds of millions worship Him as our God has much to do with why Ben Hur will never become tired as a fantastic story. The power of love, betrayal, hate, revenge, brokeness, repentance, forgiveness, redemption and renewed hope make this movie simply the best.
After watching this movie you start thinking about life and everything in a different way almost with tears in your eyes. Most emotional film ever produced and that already in 1959. Unbeatable....
This film has everything, great story, action, drama, religon, hope and such good scenes and great music. My fav film of all time. Deserved every oscar it got in its day.Well done Mr Wyler and Mr Heston
I am tempted to agree with you. I never loved Citizen Kane, generally regarded as the greatest, and CASABLANCA is terrific but when all is said and done BEN-HUR has everything going for it to make it the greatest, including Miklos Rozsa's magnificent and unforgettable film score.
For Citizen Kane to be considered the greatest movie of all time, I sure can't find it anywhere. Never seen it, but want too. Watched Casablanca the other day. It was fantastic.
Best film score ever, hands down. I get chills every time! Yeah, Miklos did "King of Kings" too, but this has it edged out by a bit. Both are phenomenal.

my favourite film of all time, from the music score, to the wonderful charlton heston, and all the actors/actresses in the film,, just beautiful, a classic
I saw this film when it first came out in a brand new theatre in Manhattan with state of the art sterophonic sound (for the time) As the audience was waiting for the film to begin, they started to play this music. It was if a bolt of lightening went through us all. I'll never forget that moment.
The Greatest Fictional story ever-Definately the best soundtrack ever by leaps and bounds-John Williams is great, but this is the best ever. The Music when Christ is on camera is perfect, you couldn't do any better, and the end track with the shepperd is the best.

Pop it into the ol' portable CD player on a hot summer day, kiss the wife good bye and go cycling for 20 or 30 miles. What a way to spend a summer afternoon.
Yes, Luvlyladeerm, here is true majesty of the like we will never see, or hear, again in cinema. Dr. Rozsa was a brilliant and beautiful man, a true gentleman and deeply religious of spirit. His music was truly the music of God. No films have been made since that match the epic triumph that is "Ben Hur".

It would have been nice to see a remake of this with Oded Fehr starrring as the title character. Too bad he's too old now.

Could not agree with you more. 49 years after seeing it for the 1st time, this music still stirs me like no other.
