I doubt very much that that star is actually gold and that the producers of the show excepted gold star winners and their families to sell the gold star themselves to get the money. They would've just given the winners the $20,000 after the show finished. The actual star is more like a trophy, something to make the show more interesting. So really Alex wouldn't have been able to keep the star and get more money in the future.
