  • Is that Oj? 1:18

  • This song with the CB BB has such a driving swing force, it makes your hart jump

  • 2:46 Basie plays one note. YESSSS

  • Eu quero esse show! Onde eu posso achá-lo?! I Want this show, where i can find him?

  • This song shows Count Basie Big Band. Not only the individual players are skilled, but the band breathes together! 3:29 part makes you breathless!

  • Howard Stern!!!

  • Mister Cleveland Eaton, Bama's finest holding it down walking the bass!

  • Does it get any better than this? The Count of Basie Plays the Duke of Ellington. Only thing I would request as a boon would be the Honorable Master Joe Williams singing on vocals!

  • Count playing Duke in the Dukes style.......but still swings like basie....The woodwind ensemble solo is priceless.

  • a very unusual cut here.....Basie paying homage to the great Duke Ellington....icluding using some of Ducke's own horn parts.....but the Count still swung it as only he could.

  • Great!

  • bom pra caralho

  • <-----3 THAT IS A LONG DICK I TELL YOU WHAT!

  • Basie has one of the coolest styles of piano playing! Laid back, but to the point. Love it!

  • @bigemoney31 like that ONE note he plays at 2:44 in the break of that crazy sax soli...he always finds the smallest bits of space and puts one perfect note in there...

  • I get to open for Count Bassie in February :D

  • @Wonderfundlez isnt he dead?

  • @ImproviseNow Yes, but the Count Basie Orchestra is still touring.

  • This was Howard's theme song many years ago. When the show was great....Great song

  • @ssnoc we had a tempt solo and no slap bass grrr haha

  • @ssnoc yes :) if only the way are jazz band was even close to playing it like this but ee

  • Basie was so cool and made it all look so effortless - what a great sound with the bass keeping perfect time and the explosions of the trombones (be proud of your dad to the last comment) a fun and great sound :)

  • This should be on fallout

  • Arreglo de Frank Foster. Soberbio

  • Oh man, every time I watch this, the double time at 0:15 gets me every time. Awesome.

  • @sharrkmaster same

  • Is the bass trombonist playing a Conn 112H?

  • Gotta love Count's solo on this.. genius.

  • Well gailalycia you should be proud. Coz your pop and the Count were some of the most awesome musical beings ever to inhabit planet earth!!!! bless am all from here in the UK :-))

  • This is what I have to say. fjdksagjkrEW TWtrwq!432!!!4321#@$!4!!!!!!!!!

I'll let you decide on whether or not that is a positive or negative comment.

    Lol, LOVE THE COUNT.

  • SWINGS SO HARD!!!

  • nobody plays BASS like MR. EATON HE'S DEFINITELY THE MAN

  • @PeteMcGuinness You must not've been black enough.

  • Comment removed

  • @PeteMcGuinness In jazz, black is just synonymous with awesome. You weren't black enough on the inside, friend.

  • I dont like the balance

I think the bones need to be better miked.

    Its not their fault...

  • @theinvisiblelight Try BASIE SWINGS STANDARDS on eBay - number is on this CD too with a much more reasonable cost. :)

  • @theinvisiblelight This is on Basie's WILD AND SWINGIN' CD. Found a reasonably priced one on eBay but what's there now want an arm plus a leg. :O

  • Absolutely CLASSIC ! If you don't tap your foot and move with this one - you're dead. Played it so often, I had to locate a CD with this number. Many Thanks . . .

  • @ble8ckerstreet which CD?

  • Is that Al Grey with the trombone ride?

  • That is one sweet video... thanks for posting. WHO was the guy that took the trombone solo?!? He ripped it, man! And he is sooooooooooo good lookin'!!! I loved when Count did his little solo... simple and sweet one-note at a time punctuated by a few chords. Hey, when you're that cool, you can say it in fewer notes. And it comes across much stronger.

  • Man....it don't get no sweeter than this, boys & girls--those horn arrangements are butter, and as for the Count....well, you just can't argue with his genius note placement...the best of the best.

  • damn, this automatically makes you tap your foot. And crave a good scotch and cigar.

  • Ugh, i have to learn how to lip trill...its hard |:

  • Go black trombone players with plungers! :D

  • Oh, sweet jesus!

You gotta live everything about this!

  • Just plain HOT sounding, love this <3

  • MAN, that sax soli was TIGHT. They left the microphones smoking

  • amazing...who is the drummer btw?

  • I love Count Basie.! I want to play with they

  • I saw the Basie band many times over the years from 1959 till his demise.. Count was the epitomy of COOL. Such light and shade. As someone once remarked, it was the notes he did'nt play as much as the notes he played. As an ensemble they were so tight, you could almost smell the hair burning. I miss him a lot so thanks for uploading this viedeo. .

  • tHE cOUNT IS SUCH A LAYED BACK GUY... gOTTA LOVE HIM!

  • This is the band that played in the classic Jerry Lewis film "Ciinderfella". The music at the grand ball given by the princess was provided by the Count Basie Band...note 'Fella's entrance to the party...very, very cool! ;=D

  • And there is the incomprable Cleveland Eaton on bass.

  • That is the wonderful Dennis Wilson on trombone! Current jazz prof at University of Michigan--go Blue!

  • Basie was the best for this.

  • Anybody know the trombone soloist...that was sick!

  • Yes, a plunger is a trombonist's best friend XD

  • @BassmanII Every time I'd ask to borrow a plunger, I'd always get the crappy used plunger...

  • @DancingSpiderman Careful how you phrase that XD

  • @BassmanII Even if the used plunger's been sprayed down with Lysol... you still know it's been used...

  • Another reason why the Count was so great, not only had a swinging band, but his own approach to the piano, "less is more" was beautiful.

  • @4bigdawgs4 Good point... We know The Count had piano chops, but yep, "less is more", he let's his band do most of "the talking"... LVOE this stuff !

  • @BassmanII I dunno, I play trombone and I really don't like using mutes at all.

  • I will play this song as 1st trombone but very difficult olay!

  • Trombone part for this is insane.

  • this is the song my jazz band is playing, same arrangement!!

  • I've listened to this song so many times. The way the band plays so low but so tight on the second half is just... I mean I can't explain how good it is to hear. It's so nice.

  • The best jazz band ever!

RIP Count, your style lives on in the CBO and all the other bands who play your charts in your way (or at least try).

  • Four heavy beats to the bar- and no messing. The lead words from Count Basie, and sure it sound that way about his music. Great swing !

  • The best Big Band no doubt! Sure miss Sonny Payne.

  • french people gay ? noooooo ! why ?

  • Count Basie ,c'est celui qui m'a fait découvrir le vrai big band étant gamin ,ça ne m'a jamais quitté ,ma vie est rythmée par le jazz !

  • We were suppose to play this is in our jr high jazz band except only me and 4 others could play it. and me and my friend had a duet o well :...(..

  • Muchas gracias por compartir estas leyendas.

  • absolutely amazing

  • No doubt about it, Bill Basie was at the Head of the Class when it came to Swingology. Thank God for ears to have heard him. Much appreciation Thiagoalves!!

    Thanks

  • @gailalycia9 haha wait is your dad dennis wilson, he taught at a jazz program i went to (he's the one with the plunger solo)

  • Trombones are not bad either. Trust me

  • great

  • WONDERFUL

  • Look at those little hands go!

  • Nothing,,,,nothing like.....

It is sad but we will never see or hear such sublime music.......Angel

  • my penis hurts.

  • lmao?...

  • Anything, and I mean anything Basie's band played rates all the stars you can give. The very definition of Big Band Swing.

  • This song is great. Hard ass sax soli tho lol. Had trouble when we played it RIP Basie

  • what a great arrangement

  • Woke up one morning in the barracks of the 4th Infantry Division Band and turned my little TV on and one of those network morning shows was playing his music and I knew he had gone. I didn't know Basie or anything like that but what a fan I was at the age of 18. Still am. Goodnight everybody.

  • Duke Ellington is music for the mind, Count Basie is music for the soul.

  • SUBLIME!!

  • Hardly mellow. This is the vintage of the Count I saw in concert, prior to his passing. The camera work really highlights the joy of a live performance, unlike some of the domestic versions. You really get the nuances of Count's leadership which tend to be overlooked by others.

  • The one thing I hate about Basie : I'm too young to have the chance to see him playing on a scene :(

  • great trombone solo ...

  • I believe the drummer is Greg Field.....

  • Who is the drummer???

  • totally awesome, our school is playing this for Jazz Band.... i like this version better :D

  • wow the count is awsome duke ellingtons band of couse the true players of this but without a doubt great music ive played it my self and its pure greatness.

  • absolute magic, the best of the best.

  • I love this piece - so mellow and cool: Basie is a genious!

(Love his little hand movement at 00:37!)

  • oh sweet swing

  • Bill Hugues, bass tb, is now the Basie Band leader ( 35 years in the band ..!)

  • Hard to write when feet and head are moving to the rythm ? ;o)

  • he plays kinda like monk

  • so u have no idea on jazz for a comment like that...

have u listened to monk or basie???

  • WONDERFUL

  • that trombone solo was savage

  • that greg fields on drums?

  • was cleveland eaton basie's regular bassist? mannn this is some chilled close jazz

  • was cleveland eaton basie's regular bassist? mannn this is some chilled close jazz

  • I hear these critiques and you strain a nat and swallow a camel. What seperates the masters from everyone else is the masters make their on rules. This why the European models pale they play according to others rule which doesn't allow room for growth.Basie and people like Basie don't think like everyone else.

  • Did you fall and hurt your head recently?

  • please know the tune before you decide to criticize a professional trombone player.

  • I do think this is a very good band. Comparable to most Basie bands.

As for the trombone player starting on the bridge... there is no bridge on this tune. There was a 4 bar sendoff, and he starts playing the 5th bar of the A section. The tune is AB... no bridge, just like indiana

  • I cant see whats wrong with the trombonsolo, i really like it.

  • lol this big band at its finest? hardly!! check iur basie from mid fifties to mid 60s. the atomic era.

  • I think that the trombome solo was OK...but it would have come out better for the trombone player if he didn't have to start his solo on "the bridge" of the tune. Starting like that takes away from an improvisors' ideas...looses his "steam." I feel that it puts him "off balance."

  • that's a big band !

  • This is BIG BAND at it's finest!!!

  • nice sax sectoin

  • Super sick...

  • bump bump

  • The only thing that is true with Basie : once u hear one of his piece of art ,u're addicted for life ;o)

  • ...and who wants to undergo withdrawal? I sure don't, man!

  • Check Basie's little arm emphasis at 4:07 for the horns and kick drums.

This is one of the slyest thangs I've ever heard by Basie or anyone else-when they get real quiet.

    All Hail Splank!

...and the bone solo is smoooth...

  • Greg Fields Drums, taking over after Duffy Jackson, who took Butch Miles. I met Greg, and he told me in confidence that him and Bassist, Grover, used to listen to Frank Zappa in the bus... but not with Bill's knowledge; Basie would not have approved. Everyone loved Bill, including late great Joe Williams. Duffy Jackson was son of bassist Chubby Jackson. Where's Dennis Roland these days?

  • Basie at it's best. A classic.

  • one finger basie:)

  • Stop dissing and just dig it.....This music is no longer....RIP you guys, seey'all in that special heaven that is for jazz players only....

  • yea man see you there

  • Wow, that trombonist is amazing.

  • ay on the groove though...the sax sloi is really nice..

    i love it.

  • Since the bone comment seems to still be alive: The root reason we listen to jazz is IMPROVISATION. How many times did this guy play in this solo spot? It probably wasn't his best outing, but it is the night that this particular camera caught him - out of countless nights. Even though "Mellow Tone" is more or less a simple series of II7-V7-I progressions, the very structure of the tune can make it a challenge to play in a SPONTANEOUS MUSICAL MANNER. The rest of the film is phenomenal!

  • It's actually a very nice sequence to play on the trombone.

  • It's an easy tune to improvise on for trombone. Unless you're crap.

  • Baise is one of the best big bands of all time and an old one, started 1934

  • that last comment was aimed at JonWRowe

  • I love the T-bone solo. I'm often watching this video solely to listen to it.

  • What are you a rock person

this is big band at its finest You know nothing of the greatness of Basie anyone who is of any knowledge in jazz would appreciate the relaxed, mellow soud of basie

  • are you actually serious or just having a laugh? the basie big band was and still is one of the best. swinging is what they do, so who are you to say that it shouldnt swing. guitarists only use distortion to hide their band playing

  • correction - BAD playing!

  • Hey JonWRowe. Are you saying the keyboardist for "Yes" is more talented than the Count?

    What is your problem?

And in response to your latest comment, two of Pink Floyd's largest influences were blues and jazz. You do realize the name of the group is derived from the two blues musicians Floyd Council and Pink Anderson, right?

My point is; stop disrespecting everyone's tastes in music.

  • I was actually making a joke.

  • Oh dude! You're not supposed to admit to that. We had a double whammy there. For ever wind up the puritanical narrow-minds. Shame on you. (Trombone solo was crap though).

  • Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, lol. It's not like they were saying the band sucked.

  • Who's the bonist? How'd he get in this band? That was about as musical as a dead lemon.

  • shut the fuck up!

  • Was that addressed to the bone player? Or was it you playing? It wouldn't surprise me - then you'd play as good as you write. Wanker.

  • The comment was to you for making a rude remark to anyone in Count's band....if you were a true musician at heart, you would respect them all and keep your childish comments to yourself. In regards to someone playing musical, that will always be subjective. And I'm sorry for my childish statement.

  • Dude, i've listened again and again, just to keep myself in check, and; it's really poor. Nothing happening as far as i'm concerned. If anyone wants to debate this seriously, go ahead. Or you can be reactionary like tbone1dam1 and use up letters.

  • I'm not about to debate with you over your opinion....peace!

  • AMEN

  • DENNIS WILSON!!

  • I thought I'd reply to your post, rather than just sit here and moan about what you've said!

I can see where you're coming from with the trombonist, but perhaps you're trying to listen too hard?

Relax, and try and listen how although he might not be following the tune, he manages to keep perfectly in time and in key.

Relax when you listen to jazz!

  • Sorry professor. I'm sure my pro music career would have been so much better had i met you 25 years ago.

  • superbe video , magnificent video

  • It was beter with Al Grey on trombone...

  • Is Willie Cook in the tpt. section?

  • giggity giggity!

  • this music truly lifts the spirit.

  • Best band in the land and the Chief was a sweet man. I went to his home in the Bahamas back in the 80's. Bill Hughes on bass bone is the current leader. John Williams on Bari is still with the band. Greg Fields on drums.
