Those who can do. Those who cannot may become teachers - or, somewhat less admirably descend to negative and perhaps even envy driven criticism.
Rosa Ponselle, whatever else might be said of her, was definitely a doer, a remarkable and great artist who also generously continued to encourage others - singers and listeners alike - to take joy in singing.
@rupepill You obviously do not have any understanding on voice. Ponselle is regarded as one of the greatest voices of all time. She was aforce of nature!!! Absolute perfection. If you want to know what great singing is then you must listen to Ponselle,
@Giovannifabuloso My understanding or lack of it is not the point. You obviously don't understand what I have written which is quite clearly complimentary to Madame Ponselle.
My criticism, if you care to reread and fairly try to comprehend my previous post, was aimed not at the singer at all but at the snide posters who had in fact criticised her.

Ugh! Age 57 or 75 or 20, it doesn't matter. Sorry, but Ponselle had no understanding whatsoever of this Lied, let alone German Lied in general. She and her pianist infused as much drama here as watching paint peel. Why so crawling slow? One can even -see- the bar lines throughout the performance. Comes to show that true art-making is far far more than having a pretty voice, pretty colors and so on and so forth.
Rosa Ponselle was fantastic. Strength and volume of voice, upper and low register unbelievable!

How lovingly they portray the figures in the poem and tell the story! Thanks for posting!

Very funny - and so true. This is a terribly boring performance.
