English has been working well for me as a second language. It's not perfect of course, and I'll never be the same as a native speaker, but I can surely access much info and express to a wide group of people that wouldn't understand me. Esperanto's idea is good, but in practice, most major languages are more useful alone, so it's kind of useless, for now.

Ido... Reformed Esperanto, is a far better sounding, easier to pronounce, and more logical language... Even the founder of Esperanto liked and approved of it... But in the late 1800's and early 1900's the people that had learned Esperanto were to stodgy and clingy to their flawed Esperanto to change over to the better Ido... Ido is still alive but spoken by far fewer people than Esperanto... But listen to Ido spoken one time and you'll agree it's what Esperanto SHOULD be...

I'm curious: why do so many people who despise Esperanto bother learning it? Why do they seek it out online and pester those who believe in the language?

Probably because they become curious about it and they want to see if it actually works.

A lot of people associate Esperanto with an aging hippie population. It's just another stigma that ignorant people like to cling to.

Honestly, I believe that the combination of technology and a world auxiliary like Esperanto will be the best bet to eliminating the language barriers.

"just plain stupid": no comment. "un-original": Esperanto has a couple of original features. "lifeless": actually the most fascinating thing about Esperanto is that it's alive and developing. You may say it's an unnatural or sickly life and that it won't live very long, but it's ALIVE, and, like Frankenstein's monster, it has a personality. Are you quite sure you'd prefer a dick to a butterfly? :)
